Hi , bought my car ( Sierra SLT ) new on August 2018 , today the battery is dead which is less than 14 months life cycle . Is that normal , any idea what will be the warranty on battery of a new car ? I have no additional lights or electric modification that can consume the battery .

Could have just been a junk battery from the start, I wouldn't concern myself with it to much at this point. Bring it to the dealer and they'll have to do a test with a midtronics machine and get a print out that the battery is no good or they'll end up charging it and sending you on your way.

I would think it was a bad battery from the start.  It should be covered under warranty still. 

 

There is going to be a bunch of battery changes in the next few months as the weather gets cold and individuals find out that the battery in their vehicles are at their end of life.  I see it every year as I go into auto parts stores and they have empty shelves where the batteries are kept.

I live in the Middle East so it real hot here not sure if this extra heat decreases the battery life

Extreme heat seems to be harder on the batteries than cold is. I don't know if that's a fact, but i do remember several other people complaining on here how early their batter went to junk and they lived in the desert southwest. I'm in Wisconsin and my truck is 4 years old with original battery. Never a hard start and we hit -20s last winter.

Heat will hurt a battery as well but the reason most see issues in the cold is because of the extra CCA's it takes to turn the engine over when it is cold due to the thicker oil and electrical draw from the starter.  

 

Plus if you are a short trip person then the battery doesn't get charged like it would and each start cycle draws it down more and more and no long drive to charge it back to full.

Absolutely Normal!  I live in extreme heat too.  GMT 900's faired slightly better but K2's are almost exactly 12-14-16 months nothing after.  Record your date when you bought LOG it and when you get to 12 months just except the fact that your going to be dead very shortly or buy new one and remove the frustration of DEAD TRUCK somewhere you don't want to be DEAD i.e. 40 miles away from nearest town no tools etc?

You may want to upgrade to Optima or something similar then, otherwise it could happen again in that heat.

Unfortunately, where he resides buying the cheapest battery is best return on money.  Even if he could get OPTIMA the added expense would still net dead battery in short order.

Wife's battery was acting up on her new explorer. I noticed the positive cable was corroded and when I took it off to clean I found this. The dealership gave us a new battery and we were on our way.f63937ee917cc89005dac188f8d9a9fe.jpg

Update - GM dealer will send a free break down to take the car and replace the battery - I will pay 50 percent of the battery price as per them since the car is still under the warranty .

Tried to jump start ( using my F150 ) but the car won’t start ( cable is good as tried before ) so GM is on the way . Pretty good service imo

I dont really understand these batteries. My wife's 2011 acaida still has original battery in it. Almot 9 years old. My 15 Sierra battery barley made it little over 4 years...dead.

Depends on voltage need some times. I’m not entirely sold on the variable output alternator. My bmw starts going bat shit crazy if voltage drops below 12.3v, and these trucks are even more technical than the X3 is. 

 

Brand new batteries can also be junk. The 3 month old one in my 442 read 0.00 after I did some distributor work. After a charge it load tested fine. HOWEVER the side terminals shows HALF the amps as the top terminals. Internal fault. Sometimes a defective battery can hide for a while, but conditions can bring those defects to a head.

    • No such thing as regenerative braking on a pure ICE vehicle.     Regenerative braking is the re-capture of energy from electric motors and stores it in the battery pack.  So hybrids, PHEV and EVs have regenerative braking.     What you are seeing is the charging system changing modes is all.  Its likely entering charge mode for some sort of reason is all.  All of the charging modes will be listed below.   As for L10 vs D.  L10 turns off automatic grade braking.  L10 puts you in control of grade downshifts where in D it will automatically do it based on brake pedal position and other factors.  Otherwise L10 and D drive exactly the same aside from that one aspect.    Battery Sulfation Mode The BCM will enter this mode when the interpreted Generator output voltage is less than 13.2 V for 45 minutes. When this condition exists the BCM will enter Charge Mode for 2–3 minutes. The BCM will then determine which mode to enter depending on voltage requirements.   Charge Mode The BCM will enter Charge Mode when ever one of the following conditions are met:   Windshield wipers are ON for more than 3 s. Climate Control Voltage Boost Mode Request is true, as sensed by the HVAC control module via serial data. High speed cooling fan, rear defogger, and HVAC high speed blower operation can cause the BCM to enter the Charge Mode. The estimated battery temperature is less than 0°C (32°F). Battery State of Charge is less than 80%. Vehicle speed is greater than 145 km/h (90 mph) A current sensor malfunction exists. System voltage is determined to be below 12.56 V When any one of these conditions is met, the system will set targeted generator output voltage to a charging voltage between 13.9–15.5 V, depending on the battery state of charge and estimated battery temperature.   Fuel Economy Mode The BCM will enter Fuel Economy Mode when the estimated battery temperature is at least 0°C (32°F) but less than or equal to 80°C (176°F), the calculated battery current is less than 15 A and greater than −8 A, and the battery state-of-charge is greater than or equal to 80%. Its targeted generator output voltage is the open circuit voltage of the battery and can be between 12.5–13.1 V. When fuel economy mode is active, the generator is not charging, only maintaining open circuit battery voltage. The BCM will exit this mode and enter Charge Mode when any of the conditions described above are present.   Headlamp Mode The BCM will enter Headlamp Mode when ever the head lamps are ON (high or low beams). Voltage will be regulated between 13.9–14.5 V.   Start Up Mode When the engine is started the BCM sets a targeted generator output voltage of 14.5 V for 30 s.   Tow/Haul Mode (if applicable) Pressing the Tow/Haul Mode button located on the center stack, the vehicle system voltage is raised and the remote (non-vehicle) battery will be charged. Having the headlamps on will raise the system voltage and if the Tow/Haul button is applied it will not serve any purpose. The voltage is regulated between 13.9-14.5 V.      
    • Hello from Australia Just sharing that there is now a way to delete the active shutters entirely with just a plug in module. Opens up tons of room to light bars etc.
    • I have an observation and a question... 1) I watch the voltage closely because I have had to dial in the cut-in/cut-out voltages of the battery separator to my camper.  The "smart" charging drives me nuts.  Anyway, I noticed that when coasting for a while, and especially if lightly using the brakes (though not necessary), the voltage goes up from mid/high-13 volts to mid/high-14 volts.  Then it drops back down after stopping or going again.  Consistently!   The only explanation I can come up with is REGENERATIVE BRAKING!  Well, maybe that's a little bit of an exaggeration, but it's certainly free extra battery charging.   2) Driving on mountain roads I will use L and vary the max gear.  Things straighten out and I end up in L10.  Sometimes I leave it there for a while.  Is there any difference between L10 and D?   
    • Do you think this width might affect the chalk test with a higher pressure closer to 65psi? I think lowering the pressure makes sense to get the tread to lay flatter
