I don't drive "in the pack" I'm either in front or behind, never cornered

How does that work, Your always in the lead or in the back? And there will be times when there is absolutely nowhere you can go, just the way things are unless you are in a perfect world?

Simply adjust ones speed, it's easy and has worked for many years.

Really nice when I get my bill for vehicle insurance with a discount for being accident & conviction free.

driving without insurance is a very common problem.  People will get insurance for a month, long enough to be able to register their vehicle or renew the registration, then cancel their insurance once it is insured.  Only way cops will know it is if they pull you over for another violation.  They don't run plates just to see if you have valid insurance.
Not true at least here in Florida. If you cancel, the insurance company notifies the state and the state let's you know that your plate/DL will be suspended. But even after all that, tons of people here still don't have insurance so I really don't know how they get away with it.

Always leave yourself an out...

You must live in a place with no traffic. I'd love to see anyone try to "leave yourself an out" where I live at 5:30 pm!

How about you further enlighten us on that... Stopped at a red light, cars in front and both sides, where is the out? Are you going to run the red light to avoid the rear ending driver if you are first in line? On a bike it is different, I am stopped slightly off to the side with the clutch in and in gear watching ready to hit the shoulder or gap in the cars.

That's what I was thinking. Here in Florida, good luck with that "leaving an out"! 95% of the time, their is no out unless you are out driving at 3 am on the highway. Down here it's about survival of the fittest when you drive & just simply keeping your eyes peeled for the other guys actions. Everytime I go out, it's like playing dodgeball with my truck. And I've been dealing with this my whole life since I'm a native Floridian.

Not always possible, no matter how much you adjust your speed. Plus, I'm not going to lengthen my trips just to pull off to the side so I can be at the beginning or end of the line. Although it sucks, this is why we have insurance.

On the bike I'm always watching and off to the side like you said. Prefer not to get ass ended on that.

Its not about the people blocking the sides of you on a multi-lane road. "Leaving yourself a way out" could simply be described in those situation by leaving yourself room in FRONT. You don't have to park on the guys bumper, here on my highway it is single lane, so when I come into a construction zone and am being stopped by a flagman, I commonly leave 2-3 car lengths in front of me just in case the 18 wheeler coming in hot behind me is paying attention, this allows you some room in case the upcoming vehicle is late on the brakes. This has saved me from at least 2 rear-ends as you monitor the approaching vehicle in your rear-view. Lots of times flag people are set up in dumb spots, on the back side of a hill or in a blind curve. You can't rely on our newly "trained" "Canadian" drivers to be paying attention to the road signs here, you are responsible for your own safety sadly.

You aren't wrong, but that isn't always the end all be all. On the bike, I do leave lots of extra room because as a car approaches me I start to walk forward just in case. But, by taking up that gap you could then be pushed into the vehicle in front of you if there is one. Sometimes accidents just happen.

So how does that work, can you put an order on them to pay for damages through the courts? I know law suits are easy to launch in the US compared to Canada, can you sue the guy for damages? Or can the police garnish his wages for you?

I don’t know, my insurance company will probably sue him.

Not really any place to go, there were 4 cars stopped in front of me and moving traffic lane to the right and a curbed median to the left. I didn’t even see him coming.

Yep, if I’d been on my bike I’d probably be dead.

Had the same thoughts on Monday with mine. At the least I’d have been thrown and hurting a Lot. Would have been in the back glass of the car in front of me or thrown past it. My bumper isn’t nearly as bad as yours but still sucks

@draperfish Did you get an estimate of the damage yet? Initially body shop believes I just have damage to the bumper. I was pumping gas this morning though and noticed my toolbox had moved. I can't guarantee it, but it hasn't moved since I put it in so I'm thinking it was from being hit like that. Concerns me that my hitch or frame could be tweaked slightly. Hitch took the impact and rolled the bumper in and on itself in my case...

I feel for you. I got hit from behind and pushed into the car in front of me when my truck was 10 days old. Every body panel except left bedside and 2 of the 4 doors had to be replaced plus quite a bit behind the bumper in the front. $17k later the truck is back in one piece and has been perfect ever since. They can do wonders fixing the damage as long as the frame is OK. Your truck will be good as new after repairs. Important thing is that you and your daughter were not hurt.

Interesting fact...when I was insuring my motorcycle, Geico suggested I get uninsured motorist and quoted a statistic that 1 in 4 drivers in Florida are driving uninsured. Crazy!

I chuckled when I read the member's advice about "leaving an out".  Accidents happen and chances are good that an accident wouldn't happen if something was different. ? Accidents by definition are not deliberate or intended.  Several years ago I was the second vehicle in a four car accident.  We were stopped on a highway at a construction zone and the car two back from me failed to notice we were stopped.  The eerie thing for me was seeing this about to happen and no safe driving technique in the world would have reduced the impact!  If there was anything Op could have/should have/would have done differently it doesn't change the outcome.  If there were lessons to be learned, the participants already know!
