Is there any good reason to be going faster than that?

Well this is America. Speed limits are for safety of the masses. However, isolated highways, no traffic, extra cash in wallet feeds the need for speed.

The problem is Americans are also free to sue their manufacturers.. so now the manufacturers are exercising their right to put in speed limits. I know I've hit the speed limiter in the 2021 Cheyenne which was intended for the Mexican market. I never went over 100 mph in the 2019 Silverado though.

A thread like this pops up every now and then. From what I’ve been able to find on the subject. It’s more to do with drive shaft speed and the length of the driveshaft. There’s seems to be a speed where the driveshaft losses it balanced and gets wanky. I suspect in mass production the balance is close enough for the masses. If you look real hard all over your vehicle there’s plenty of places you’ll find good enough is the rule. Pretty much how it goes during mass production. If you travel out west where you can fly a few mods will make that happen. At least up to the 14 model my last new truck. When it was easy to tune them.

There is likely more than one thing that determines the speed limiter setting

-- just as there is more than one thing that determines the payload rating and the tow rating.

20" tires shipped on my truck are S rated (door sticker shows this too)

The optional

R3O         Tires, LT275/65R18C blackwall Goodyear Wrangler DuraTrac MT

are Q speed rated

I have a 19 CCSB 5.3L 4WD with a 3.23 rear and 20" rims that came with Bridgestone AT S rated tires.  It was limited to 112.

I did a limiter delete program and the truck will now do 130, barely. 128-129 if there is even a slight breeze for a headwind.  It has T rated tires, and I can state, without any reservation, that the truck can do 125-130 for upwards of 30 minutes without the tires blowing or the drive shaft going kaboom.

Before anyone freaks out, this truck is used as a patrol vehicle.

2021 custom V6 with stock 20 inch rims. My fun ends at 98MPH

I have a 2021 AT4 with 18" wheels. I've gone over 110 mph with it. But the tires it came with are Goodyear Wrangler Fortitude 265 65 18, which has a speed rating of 118 mph. Seems like GM is limiting the speed of these trucks to match the tire's speed rating. So, not necessarily based on wheel diameter.

Has anyone actually "blown up" their driveshaft with proof, like many claim?  I have removed my speed limiter and gone well above what some said will do just that with no issues.

On a closed course... in Mexico :)

I have not but trust me it happens. I've seen it. Not on the newer trucks but on the K2XX especially when doing dyno tuning the driveshaft will grenade. On the T1XX since the tuning is so limited I haven't seen anyone do it just yet.

I have not seen driveshaft blow in person but it does happen. You take a balanced shaft that is balanced at a rpm built into the design and speed and run it out of those specs your at risk as a simple 1/4 oz weight turns into a 3lb weight don't remember the exact numbers and when you take the design out of the spec of the shaft it becomes out of balance and running it out of those specs the shaft will vibrate and come out before you can stop the truck, if you start to feel the vibration its to late. I have seen videos of vehicles on a dyno and the shaft exploded and came into the car blowing right through the floor.

If you look at the safety requirements for a 1/4 mile drag car they all have to have the driveshaft loops installed for this reason.
