Failed catalytic converter

New to me 2014 GMC sierra 1500 5.3 motor.  224000kms.  Think it had a pretty hard life on gravel roads.

Just took it to the dealer to have tranny replaced.

Have been getting codes p0420 and p0430.  Dealer tells me I need a new y-pipe and cats to the tune of $1300.

Not sure if he's full of crap.

Could I expect a failed cat at 224000kms?

Very possible at that mileage. Other factors could have lead to the failure of the cats. Excessive oil burning can cause this problem.

I'd have to have to the truck hooked up to my scan tool to watch other parameters to see if something else was off and causing a problem.

With those codes that means your cats aren't performing as intended. If you can live with the light on you should be fine. Or possible look into an aftermarket y-pipe should save you a few hundred if you can do it yourself. Being that you believe it spent most of its life on dirt roads you might need some torches.

The dealer is full of crap. Don't trust the garbage they tell you. The repair should only take you 1 hour.

Click the link and it's your Y-Pipe. Loosen and remove the flange bolts, loosen the flex pipe clamp and remove the assembly and replace with new one. It's SUPER easy.

When I did the afm delete/ non afm cam, I didn’t get the tune done ASAP and it jacked up my catalytic converter‘s (y-pipe) found one from a 2018 Sierra for 200$ and 125$ to install it at a small muffler shop, then got the tune to turn off the v4 mode. SOLD MY OLD MESSED UP Y-PIPE FOR 100$ to a dude on OfferUp that buys messed up catalytic converters

My truck is a 2014 Silverado I haven’t had a problem with the 2018 Sierra y pipe I had installed, a lot cheaper then 1300$ I’d look around on OfferUp for a used y-pipe off a newer truck
