WhatsApp was one of those little known secrets my wife's coworkers told her about. Both the caller and recipient must have the app on their device. It saved a lot of money with international calling. Downside of most countries in the other side of the equator lack the infrastructure for video calling. There were many times I had to hang up the video call and call my wife via regular calling through the app.

The infrastructure required to enjoy our technology is huge and constantly changing.  I lived in a community  in the 80's where sharing your phone-line with only 3 other households was a good thing and another community in the 90's where cell phones or non-dial up internet were unavailable. Now I'm beginning to wonder if we can be over connected!  We have a very nice young neighbour who knows our family all live far away.  Since the start of the pandemic she has phoned us on a regular basis to see if we're ok or in need.  I know that the younger a person is, the older people our age appear and I think she believes we're more limited in our abilities than in reality!   (I remember being an adult and thinking 50 was old!)  The other night, my wife and I were both on our cell phones while watching TV and this neighbour called on our landline for a wellness check!  We burst out laughing because we both realize how lucky we are and we don't dare mention the idea of sitting undistracted watching a show together!

Yes it is. It shows that they don't want people to make decisions and he wants complete control. People don't like being told what to do, they like information to be able to make a decision. Sadly some people like and want the government to tell them how to live their lives.

Just pick up the phone and call just about anyone in the (mostly) United Counties of Texas, Florida and other self motivated states. We’ll gladly give guidance on how to get together. And go to school, restaurants, etc.

Lucked out in my state and not much changed. Never a mask mandate. 99% of all businesses stayed open. Did have a stay at home order for a month last Mar-Apr, but most people were still out. Was still eating in restaurants. Basically left up to people to decide.

An aside  but on point is a persons state of conditioning and diet as to physical ability. Forced into retirement at 55 and not being a guy with active hobbies at the time I made the mistake of 'taking it easy'. Soon my doctor was telling me that I would turn 90 before turned 60 and to get on the move. Dad would would even laugh at me. "I'm in better shape that your are!" Thing is, he always has been but.....that man can not sit still. Takes awhile to recover some state of fitness once you've let it slide. Being locked down hasn't helped. It is a standing joke, right? The COVID 30 (pounds)!

The irony of locking down and everyone gaining COVID weight when 51% of COVID hospitalizations were in obese people, and 28% overweight. 🙂

I understand people gained weight during lockdowns, I just dont see why. Lockdowns don't stop someone from exercising and eating right. A person can exercise in the home, outside on the property, and I never read any rule that stopped someone from going on a walk or run. People that couldn't go to work had even more time to focus on exercise and eating right. I see the lockdown as an excuse instead of admitting to oneself and others the real deal.

People get depressed and eat. And eat. And eat.

I thought at the start of this whole thing that people would mostly lose weight. Since many were forced into eating at home rather than out at bars and restaurants. But I guess that doesn’t matter if you just sit on your butt all day.

I think those actions are still restricted in NY and CA. 😂

Umm, childcare is an issue. I can't leave the house when my toddler is sleeping. My children cannot keep pace with me for a good cardio workout. I also do not have weights to workout with because the military restricts how much weight they'll pay for when moving household goods. Weight over the limit is charged to the family, and it can get very expensive very quickly. When I workout I try to get my heart rate up. Being stopped by wife or kids mid-set yields no results, gets very frustrating, and can put a total stop to the workout. So I stopped working out. I'll wait for normalcy to return. I'm behind enemy lines, so that may take awhile. Take comfort in knowing that my fat *** may benefit some poor soul because I'll be the slower one that gets eaten by a bear while they get to run to safety. I don't mind because that means I went down doing some good in this world by saving somebody's life.

Children are just now getting to the point where they can participate in sports in Southern California.

The wife and kids knew not to bother me during workout time. Plus the wife likes me staying fit and she works out. I would go into the yard or garage, crank up the music and be all to myself. I never ran much during my own workout and left that for PT time. Plus burn more fat faster lifting heavy objects. I always shipped my weights and was lucky enough to never break weight. Now being retired I have even more time to workout even though the pain really sets in afterwards.

I'm glad it all worked for you. Honestly, I am. I wish it all would work for me. Once the YMCA reopens and childcare is available through them, I'll get back into it.

I get it.   I was in better shape at 65 than 55.  Covid19 changed routines for most of us and weight gain was a popular result.

This past year was a change similar to the first year of retirement   It takes a lot of activity to replace a typical 8 hour work day!  My post employment routines were pretty entrenched before Covid hit but I was very surprised by how much additional time the closures and restrictions required me to fill!   My exercise plan is simply shying away from the sedentary projects (like sorting boxes of old photos) and look for activities that involve moving around.    For some of us, something as simple as getting down on to the floor to play with the dog can be physically demanding.  It is harder for some to burn fat than others.  I look fine and can walk miles but struggle to get into a standing position. Who knew? 😉   The most effective option for me is managing my intake which all credit in this regard goes to Mrs. Donstar!

    • Enjoy the new truck, it’s a beauty. I’m glad you’re keeping the OBS, I love those old trucks.
    • With large equipment or deep mud it is more of a use the higher gear to avoid spinning tires, getting stuck because of spinning tires and doing damage to your machine. The idea is if you run out of torque before you spin tires you can still downshift for more torque. If you are just spinning your tires in the lowest available gear you are stuck and things break.   Automatic transmissions, traction control and electronic transfer cases change the calculation a little as you the driver have less control over each piece.
    • are there any codes? with lots of rust, perhaps disconnect/clean both sides of the connection/examine cable ends (the wires) for corrosion going into the sheath & replace if necessary/reconnect ALL the power AND ground cables between the battery, engine, frame, cab, fuse box and starter charm.li (website) has a no-start diagnostic procedure you can work through to get it working.
    • Its no wonder you've gravitated to the oil types and brands you have in later years after trying certain brands and one being a specialty oil or at least very hard to come by up here and the other would have been a commonly found oil of the era and the vastly different outcomes as a result to using the vehicles in question the same distance for an OCI . It shows what marketing hype can do without actually having the product to back up the claims and that is no different now with the insane claims that are written on the side of a bottle of oil from some of the off the shelf oils.    What has surprised me and I was already finding this out before I bought my truck with the GDI engine, that this newer fancy technology that seemingly would suggest better fuel economy/emissions with this high pressure spray of fuel is not in reality kind at all to the engine or at least the oils life. Yet they insist on claiming long OCI with this technology just like they did with the port or similar type fuel injection systems when in reality its a step back in oil life to have a GDI system.    I think the mistake your making Grumpy is that your not sending your samples to Blackstone and getting the feel good glowing report that you can run it another 1000 or more miles and then send another sample where they say run it yet another 1000 miles and on and on it goes until your sending in something that looks a lot like road tar and then they may suggest you change your oil within the next 1000 miles 😆
    • I am guessing that engines of that design back then had a better ability to be abused and survive longer than a new design engine with the long timing chain and the overhead cams and phasers etc. But I would never guess that an engine could go that far and not fail spectacularly or at least die a slow death.
