GM Sold Me A Chunk Of Rust With A Truck Around it

Recommended Posts

I have 2020 delivered in this condition with ~400 miles on it. Been to several dealers and they say all the issues I am having are normal and there is nothing they can do. One even went so far as to say, all GM vehicles are really rusty right from the manufacture and all the vehicles currently on the lot are severely rusted. Okay, I can except that GM got a huge bailout from taxpayers and is too big to fail and can do whatever they want, but when the rust bucket they sold me is leaving rust spots on the new driveway I just had installed and ruining it, It goes too far.

Now I have been playing phone tag and pass the sucker around with GM customer care, but this has been going on since March.

Am I unrealistic to expect that a vehicle should not leave rust spots
on my driveway?

That's crazy.  My 5 year old truck doesn't have any rust anywhere (TX truck).  I would be pissed off at that.

Surface rust on wax-coasted chassis parts.  All you (or the dealer) needs to do is touch it up with Nox-Rust.

I guess the HD frames are still wax coated?  There was some talk GM was going to E-coat chassis.

That is b@llsh!t.  Stay on GM customer services @$$!  Keep asking for someone higher up!

I went through this a few years ago with GM. I had a 2016 Sierra SLT that had the notorious GM shakes/vibration. Truck didn't have 6k miles on it when GM finally bought it back. I battled with them for 6 months.  The truck was at dealership garage more than my own. I was persistent and called them everyday. When you pay the amount of money for these trucks, WE as consumers shouldn't have to deal with any issues on them the first 5 years, unless its basic scheduled maintenance.

Good luck and stay on them!

I was going to post separately, but I found a black "goo" all over my frame and chassis when i installed my steering stabilizer. Is this the wax you are talking about? Comes off easily and is worse than grease.

That's the stuff.  It does come off easy, but is supposed to protect steel to a certain extent even if it's wiped off. The advantage to it is that it is available in aerosol cans and is easy to apply.

I'll let you in on an industry secret, all rust starts as surface rust. If you think its normal for a truck to have enough "surface rust" to leave large rust spots on a driveway, I have the perfect truck for you. Didn't I talk to you at Chevy customer care?

This thing is rust from front to back and way more than just surface rust, I could only post 9.33mb worth of photos. I have over 100 more that really demonstrate how bad this problem really is. I have never heard anyone say my frame has rust, so that makes this thing worth a lot more money. Everybody wants a extra rusty frame. Gives you a nice warm feeling driving down the road.

If that problem is not bad enough this piece of junk has a ton of other problems. I would load up that ton of other problems and haul them away, but I'm in fear of this thing falling apart.

The brakes can not stop this thing and the ABS activates and only the left front tire locks and pulsates, the rest do nothing, the oil pressure is very low, never goes over 40psi, it runs hot if it's not in motion, goes over 235 degrees, the rear view mirror is so lose it vibrates to where you can't even see out of it, the horn sounds like a cow slowly dying, the rightside running board has rust coming through. Those are just what I have noticed in driving about 200 miles. I have stopped driving it out of fear of dying or killing someone else.

I know some of you will hate this, but it;s a gasoline 6.6L High Country. literally the only reason I bought it. Sorry

This is supposed to be the future of the LS generation. I had high hopes. I admit my fault for trusting GM.

Be patient.

Check into your states Lemon Law?

Keep good records and stay on GM.

Sucks for sure.

Good Luck

Are you in the salt belt? With 400 miles, wondering if somebody at the dealership had to use it on the salty roads over the winter.

Have them pull up this bulletin below.  Its written for the 2014-2020 K2XX trucks but they still use the same $hitty wax so this repair should be applicable.  If they give you resistance, start a case with GM and the dealer, mention this bulletin and that you are experiencing the same issues as it.

On the oil pressure, does it never go over 40psi or is it under 40psi at certain RPMs such as idling?  These gas engines do have a dual stage oil pump.  Hot idle will be between 20-30psi on the gauge.  Cruising speeds about 40psi.  Over 3500rpm the second stage activates and the pressure will jump up to 60-70psi.

Your ABS issue can most likely be addressed by this bulletin:

I agree with being patient and persistent yet polite/respectful.  The people you are speaking to are doing their jobs and you want them to move you to the next step.   Surface rust on new truck frames is not unusual and is not a new concern.   I always assumed it meant the truck had been sitting on a lot for awhile.    It sounds like your truck saw some activity prior to your purchase and  higher "demonstration" miles c/w rust is a curiosity    Your third picture of heavy rust on a new truck is particularly disturbing.  When your dealer suggests this is normal, ask to have a look at the same spot on comparable trucks.  I doubt you'll find one like yours. (take pictures of how this spot should appear)   My Sierra is five years old, lives outdoors on the west coast and you won't find rust like this on my truck.

Delaware, but the truck came from Pennsylvania.
