Just crossed 120k on mine, other than the AC and recalls its been a solid truck. We've had many 5.3L's make it well over 250k before selling them. Maintenence is key to these trucks, espicially the transmission. New fluid and filter every 45K.

Fresh oil and filter every 5k maximum.

244k on my '18 1500 2wd 5.3. On it's third 6l80e, first one gave up at 97k, second one at 187k. Have replaced other things like water pump, t-stat, coolant surge tank, and normal wear items like brake pads, plugs, etc.. I threw a P0420 code last weekend, will mess with it this weekend and see if it the cat or O2 sensor. Have a front strut making a little noise on bumps and turns with the suspension loaded, so fronts will get replaced pretty quickly. The biggest concern, however, at this time is that my oil pressure has dropped a little bit from normal and I'm getting a slight lifter tick from the odd bank. Might be doing a rebuild pretty soon, we'll see. If I do, the junk JMBX torque converter will get replaced with something that won't eat itself and destroy the transmission.

 

Overall, transmission issues aside it's been a pretty dang good truck. I would have traded it in by now except for outrageous new truck prices and reliability issues. At this point I think I'd rather work with what I have instead of taking on something unknown for so much more money.

I have a 2014 Silverado 1500 with a 5.3. It currently has 308k miles I’ve replaced everything (not including the frame and body) except the brake booster and motor. The motor just sorta gave out, due to the dod/afm system. I have a spring that’s getting stuck when compressed it’s on cylinder 1 . I’d put money on it, if the dod system wasn’t installed on this my motor would still be going strong. I’m not the type to drive a truck easy I beat on it like a tractor so for the motor lasting this long, I give my ultimate respect to it. I’m rebuilding my motor and deleting the dod system hoping I can get another 300k out of it

Purchased in '14 a new SLT, I "only" have 70K miles on it. Other than the HVAC control on the driver side replaced, no other issues at all. I do all my own oil changes on a time basis since I don't drive it much, I ignore the OLM. Original brakes but the front rotors have been warped for a long time, I will not have them machined but replaced instead. Uses no oil between changes, only what I wipe off the dipstick, LOL!

23K miles on my 2018 sierra crew cab 6.6’ bed 4x4 6.2L 8L90. 

no, I haven’t been in prison for the last couple years or ever. 
 

I have multiple vehicles and might have a problem lol. 
 

Dealer replaced negative battery cable right before the bumper-to-bumper warranty was up due to occasional odd messages immediately after starting like service stabilitrack, Airbag, etc. 

 

Even after the negative battery cable was replaced due to it testing high on resistance. I still would see these messages messages occasionally right after start up. Replaced the battery. messages almost never show up although just when I think it’s really fixed I’ll get a message after a few months. Seems the only happen if I restart truck after a brief amount of time like after refueling. 
 

Engine and Transmission have been fine. I at home flushed the 8 speed with the new fluid at 18k miles. 
 

Drivers window rattles when closing the door. Only if it’s rolled up all the way. If I tap the down button just a touch then no rattle.

Just hit this milestone, still no problems. Replaced both tail lights now because of condensation inside the lenses, other than that, just routine maintenance.

Up until lately on my 2016, I had some expected issues but nothing major. I had a fuel injector go bad 2 years ago but also had a leak coming from upper oil pan last year which could have been expensive as well as a transmission cooling line leak at same time. Coolant thermostat went bad about a year ago and that was a cheap fix. I had a bearing in front left go bad towards end of last year. I also changed out the rear shocks and front struts recently but consider that just basic maintenance.

 

Biggest problem until recently was a crack in front right shaft housing. I wasn't able to find a reason as to why it happened but that happened during original bumper to bumper warranty and got fixed. A month ago, my starter went bad and needed to be replaced. And just a week ago my transmission failed and required a remanufactured replacement be installed. I am at just under 97,000 miles right now. I did the recommended 50k transmission fluid replacement as well as changed out the transmission fluid thermostat to the updated 70c one a couple years back but still had failure.

I have a 2015 sierra z71 w/82k on it. Only major issue is the A/C condenser, an electric steering gremlin and and exhaust manifold gasket leak. It has a 3.5in lift with 35's a RH grill guard and a RC hidden mount 12k winch, and it gets used like a truck. Thanks to some wonderful idiots it has had some new fenders in the front and a bumper at the body shop at different times. I have a 2020 suburban premier RST w/the same 5.3L and that has 86k on it. Only issue w/that was the water pump went under warranty, but it seemed like it was more a bad part then a common issue.

2015 Silverado LT Z71 4x4, 5.3 gas. 227,545 and counting. Damn good truck. Faithfully changed oil right at 20% remaining for the entire life of vehicle. Cold air intake and 6" lift. Daily driver. Only issue is water getting in somewhere. Other than that I will drive it til wheels fall off...then buy new wheels.. lol

You didn't mention on whether the leak was up front or in the back of the cab. Just an FYI, the 2 most common locations that develop leaks are from the sharkfin antenna or the third brake light. The leaks are from the seals failing. Both are somewhat easy fixes.

    • Thanks newdude!  By the time manual selection is needed, I'm probably too much of a control-freak to depend on the transmission sensing braking to activate automatic downshifting.  I would be anticipating the situation and already be manually downshifting.   This truck replaced a 2004.5 LLY diesel with the Allison 5-speed.  Putting it in T/H made noticeable differences (when the torque converter locked, upshift points, downshift behavior).  On this 2024 gasser with the 10L1000 I haven't been able to detect much, if any, difference.  Ok, I can never tell now when the torque converter locks up.  But I also don't notice differences in shifting.  For downhills, I've probably already manually downshifted by then anyway.  Since it's also more awkward (than the 2004.5) to engage/disengage I don't even bother.  Or maybe it doesn't really matter with just a 3k lb. camper in the bed?   Thanks also for the list of reasons the charging system might select various voltages.  However, what I am seeing doesn't fall into any of those categories.  It very definitely, and very consistently, rises after coasting/braking.  Maybe not immediately, but not very long after coasting/braking.  Very consistently drops voltage when no longer coasting/braking.  It might also be interacting with the camper battery charging (I might disconnect the camper and see if it changes the charging behavior).  I also need to recheck turning on headlights for when I want to force it to charge the camper.   Another JR, in June I converted the camper to LiFePO4.  Since it's not a good idea to try to charge lithiums directly using truck, I installed a Victron Orion XS DC-DC charger (which BTW is AMAZING!!).  Being cheap, I only had to buy that one item (besides the battery, of course) to do the conversion.  The camper OEM 120v battery charger (only 19 years old and works perfectly) and the truck feed the input to the DC-DC charger (not at the same time).  But I didn't want the camper charger feeding back to the truck so I kept the old separator.  I considered replacing the separator with a 30amp diode but that means more work and might add another 1/2 volt drop.  One thing that surprised me was the voltage drop over the long 10awg wire run, so I can only charge smoothly at 8 amps (because the DC-DC charger is completely configurable).  Another reason I don't want an added voltage drop with the diode.  I might also be a little lazy but all this work is being done under the sink with a small cabinet opening.    
    • apparently CA smog is (or at least was)  checking that the vehicle is using the oem and/or a ca smog approved tune, so I expect you'll fail inspection doing it.
    • yes, leaking exhaust will mess up o2 sensor readings, which in turn messes up fuel trims.
    • 286,740 Mile Services   8/6/2026   New AC Compressor. Refrigerant oil and dye, evacuate and charge system.  New exhaust system from cat back.  New Iridium plugs plus replace #3 coil Repair/rewire headlamp wiring (passenger side) and replace all forward bulbs. Polish lenses of both assemblies.  Pull rear rotors, clean and adjust parking assembly. Inspect, clean and grease front calipers. Check pads and shoes.  4 wheel power bleed of brake system. Dot 4 Reset idle speed 50 rpm higher New Serpentine belt.    Will need new pads in the rear in about 5K more miles.    Tax Title and License out the door just short of a grand.    AC clutch had bitten the dust. 1 year warranty on the pick and save replacement. Thing will make a Polar Bear cry Uncle.  He spent quite some time on the wiring. It was in the harness and he does nothing half. I got off cheap. I have considerable more light down the road. Sylvania Silver Star replacements.  Gas seal between the porcelain and shell of plug #3 was blown, cooked the coil. That was the cold miss.  Love the new exhaust. I can sneak into the neighborhood again.  Nice to have a working parking brake again. Belle Tire never got it done. That was disappointing.    This was one of her bigger bills and still way cheaper than a payment even given the oil consumption. This thing cost me under a hundred a month in repairs and normal routine costs. What is my incentive to replace it? 🤔
