What's the overall concensus on the free oil changes through the dealers. This is my first GM product so I have zero experience with the maintenance guys, as I have read horrible stories about putting in the wrong oil, etc..

Maybe Im reading too much into it, but I'm the guy that buys my own oil and filter and take it to my friends garage to put it on the lift for all my vehicle's oil changes.

Are you guys taking advantage of the freebies?

Im a licensed service tech here in Canada, started wrenching in shops when i was 17. I've never in my life brought any of my vehicles to someone else for work as an adult. Im gonna try it out for the first one and see how it goes! If everything goes well I bring it back for the second one then continue to do my own and switch to Mobil1.

Its an oil change, what could possibly go wrong!? haha.

Nope I’ll do
Myself

I took it in for the brake recall and the service guy was like you’re due for an oil change. Nope I’ve already done 2 [emoji38]

Took mine in for the free oil change and was pleasantly surprised by the dealer I plan to return for future oil changes they quoted me $59 for full synthetic and tire rotation on my 1500 6.2 I usually do all my own basic maintenance but at that price i will let them do it.

Curious as to what brand oil?

The oil is AC Delco and is made by Mobil.  It's not a bad oil.  As for free, nothing is free. It is always worked into the price of the vehicle.  You just don't see it.

I had them do my "free" oil change.  Figured I paid for it and so why not.  Plus they rotated the tires.  I'll run it a short distance and then switch over to AMSOIL Signature Series from here on out.

My RST was $10k off and they also threw in free lifetime oil change. I was happy with the $10k off and didn't care much for the oil change since the dealership was pretty far from me. Twice, they did it without me asking when I turned it in for the recall, that was nice since it completely slipped my mind.. twice.

My Benz came with free lifetime car wash but the long lines at 6:00 a.m. in the morning.. never again.

I never take them up on their "free" oil changes.  I've heard of too many oil change horror stories at dealers, jiffy lubes and independents.  I do my own, so I know it was done right and I actually got the synthetic oil I paid for.

you may want to double-check if they lube the grease nipples on the truck.  While newer trucks have fewer of them (at least, from the factory), there are still some, and they should get hit regularly.  some dealers will, some don't...

Meh... If you have a good dealership I wouldn't worry. IMO it's a Chevy truck not a BMW. If your dealership network is limited and you've heard bad things then I'd do it myself. Aside from that, I generally don't trust the small mom and pop oil change shops. Around here they still slap on the reminder sticker saying to come back in 3000 miles or 3 months.

I have a great dealer 30min away, they even stopped by my house once to take a picture of my mirror cap coming off my 2019 so they could warranty and order the part without me having to waste time bringing it to them. Aside from my "free" new truck oil changes I also have $250 worth of GM points, so I won't be paying for anything for a while lol.

Do it yourself.

I decided to let them do my 3.0 Diesel.  After telling the service writer to make sure they use the right oil ....  I get get it back -  they used the wrong oil (Part # on service order) and one quart short.

Never again.

They didnt have the oil in stock - so I got the schlep to another dealer to pick it up and do the oil change myself.

Dealership does my 1500, and my ZL1 Camaro.

One tech to touch them all!

I know who's working on my vehicle and I know what product is going in.

    • Yes, and also pulling heavy trailers or a large camper up steep grades as well as descending grades such as the more rustic off road camping locations and using engine braking with that low gearing as well as soft ground can just suck the power . I realize pickups these days tend to have an over all lower first gear ratio compared to automatic transmission pickups from years back so that has helped a lot in its ability in high range but there comes a point if in four wheel drive the torque runs out at the wheels, certainly with a gas engine. They don't put two speed transfer cases on pickups for a cool factor, they have a function if one needs that massive torque to the wheels that high range can't deliver.
    • Notes 7/18/2026   3,400 miles on this batch of Mobil 1 Euro 5W40 since the GDI pump replacement. Alcohol runs very clean when ring seal is tight and the sump isn't getting hosed with fuel. Checked oil level at fill up today as is my practice and grabbed a white Kleenex to look at the color. What color?  I was going to change it but.....
    • 4 low is really nice on steep boat ramps.
    • Interesting, I suspect I would have fueled up in Lee Vining as the day prior I would have filled up either in Laughlin or near there and maybe again before I entered Death Valley and once out the other side late that evening as I kept on driving into the night up near Lee Vining. Next morning I most likely fueled up in LV before heading over Tioga Pass into ( as I refer to it as "Yose .... Mite" 😁 ). And again that was 19 years ago but the price then must not have jumped out at me like the 5 bill a gallon theme of nutty cult hippy country Big Sir or head so far up their rear Aspen. I'd be curious to know where the highest prices are in the lower 48, I probably would not be far off to guess somewhere in Cali forn ie. Coldfoot and Prudhoe bay may have those prices beat but that is a whole other world up there and when prices are more normal elsewhere that is about what they can be up there I believe in no mans land. Anyway interesting that the 395 corridor is hosing people and the thing is, its tourist season and its not like there are a lot of competition options when driving up that highway from what I could see. Yup, big ole Boaterhomes and various other RV's ahead and behind me at the Yosemite entrance gate and they have to get their fuel somewhere.
    • Those can be high, as well as the big California cities. The ones that will pop your eyes out are the 395 corridor on the Eastern side of the Sierra Nevadas. Lee Vining, $7.19 for regular and $8.89 for diesel is what the Google said right now.
