Passed 60k over the weekend. Thinking of ordering an MPVI2 through HP tuners and tinkering around. Mainly to shut off AFM, adjust fan logic, tire size, etc. Then eventually do some logs and get it tuned (local/remote). I don't necessarily trust my self adjusting more than that without seeing some examples, base tunes, etc. The logic on these ECMs seems way more complicated than standard LS stuff. Has anyone done these things in HPT and care to help? Is it worth logging with a wideband for a (at the moment) lower thermostat, intake, exhaust only setup? To lower the turn on temps for the fan is what he means.

 

A wideband isn't needed if you didn't change any major parts. The intake and exhaust are mods but the intake is still the same diameter as stock so the airflow across the MAF didn't change, it's just a different design is all.

Kidding. Of all the 'normal' things a guy can do I am on board with a lower thermostat.

If the eight speed has a ATF thermostat a delete is right there with it.

Yes adjust fan settings/logic to compliment the katech 174 tstat. My 8 speed has always seemed to run cooler than other people's, but I wouldn't be opposed to removing the trans tstat/flipping the pill

I've been running a Reisch Racing 170 F for a awhile now with the pill flipped and have not, as of yet, lowered the fans. Now I don't do much city driving but I did get caught on I-39 late one night in 100 F weather to less than a crawl over a car burning in the road. Except for that night I'd never seen my fans on or my ATF over 200 F since the changes. Normally it runs around 160 F on 90 to 100 degree days climbing to the mid 170's as I pass through towns and interchanges. Dead cruise on a 75 F day is 145 F. Even Micky D's on a hot day for 20 minutes will not get over 180 F.

I figured as much....more curious why?

 

What is he experiencing that he sees a need to adjust the fan strategy, that was the point of my question.

 

High ECT temps low vehicle speed, city?

High ECT temps under heavy load at freeway speeds?

These trucks run unnecessarily hot. Personally I don't like seeing 220 for extended periods while towing. It's also easy to hit 230 doing 2wd runs at the sand dunes. Thin oil and hot temps from the factory help these things look good on paper.

And that's why I was asking for the OPs experiences...

 

I live in AZ. Our Tahoe sees nothing but 210 all day, every day. Occassionally beyond that....and that's not towing, one person in the vehicle.

Hence, why I want to adjust fan settings. Even with a lower tstat they come on way too late because of the stock fan calibration and Target ECT. Only way I run close to my 174 tstat is sub 80 degree ambient temps and minimal stop and go.

After you tune out the AFM, remove it mechanically with a full delete kit.  You could even up the cama bit while you're at it and really wake it up.

I know mine is a 6 cylinder but I can stay under 177 F at 105 F ambient unless, like I said earlier I'm dead in the water in some wreck scenarios. That is when I could use some fan work.

What tuner are you going to use ?

Are you going back with a stock cam ?

    • That makes sense, and I think you are describing the real product problem. Capturing data is the easy part. If the owner or technician has to manually dig through five minutes of millisecond-level logs, the product has already failed. The device would be at the ECM harness, not at the OBD port, so I agree that data retrieval and event marking need to be thought through carefully. The way I am thinking about the architecture is: The recorder itself should not depend on a phone, app, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, or cloud connection to capture the event. It should always keep a local rolling buffer and lock the event locally. A button, phone app, or small cabin device would only act as an event marker. If the driver feels a stumble and presses the button 10–30 seconds later, the pre-buffer has to already contain the useful data. For data retrieval, the practical options would be a sealed service USB lead, Wi-Fi download, or a phone/cabin companion device. I would not expect the owner to remove the ECM-side module or work with raw files directly. The cloud or AI side would be for interpretation, not for capturing the event. The truck may have no connection when the issue happens, so the evidence has to be saved locally first. After that, cloud processing could help decode the data, compare it against baselines, and generate a readable report. For the first version, I would keep the automatic triggers conservative and objective: driver event marker bus-off error passive voltage drop / brownout device reset FIFO or queue overflow a normally periodic message disappearing side-to-side communication mismatch, if the topology supports that For “learning normal,” I agree with your point, but I would not want to overclaim it as automatic root-cause diagnosis at first. A realistic first step would be learned baseline comparison for that specific vehicle and operating condition. For example, a value would only be compared against similar conditions: RPM range load / MAP throttle position gear / vehicle speed coolant and oil temperature battery voltage AFM/DFM state, if decoded and validated Then the report could flag things like: this periodic message disappeared compared with its normal timing this value deviated from this vehicle’s normal range under similar conditions the same abnormal pattern repeated after the same type of event the anomaly occurred together with voltage, oil-pressure, misfire, or communication changes But I would still call that “abnormal pattern detected,” not “replace this part,” unless there is enough validated repair data behind it. So the intended product would not be “here is a huge log.” It would need to be an event package: what triggered the capture how much pre/post data was preserved what changed before and after the event whether the device itself reset, overflowed, or saw a bus error selected graphs around the event raw data only as supporting evidence From your perspective, what would make this kind of report useful instead of just another datalog? For example: What are the top 5 parameters or events you would want highlighted first? Would you trust a learned baseline for that specific vehicle, or would you prefer fixed thresholds? How much false-positive flagging would be acceptable before you stopped looking at the reports? What would a one-page report need to show for an independent shop to take it seriously? For misfire, AFM/DFM, oil pressure, or U-code complaints, what would you want the tool to flag automatically?
