It’s just ridiculous that we are dealing with this and no one wants to take ownership of the problem..I love my GMC but I’m very disappointed also. I went and done post to GMC Corporate on Twitter and they act like they’re concerned..they wouldn’t recognize all the posts of different peoples vehicles..I think I will keep posting pics to their Twitter account..

I don't have a flaking problem on my 2018 Silverado, but the paint does chip very easily. My only advice is to keep the truck out of the sun as much as possible. Also, wax the paint periodically to k

Unfortunately, that door can't be spotted, and is only a sign of things to come. It must be completely stripped of all paint, all trim removed, then blended into adjacent panels, removing all trim on

Here's another one.  My 2015 Sierra Denali.  Same place.  Such BS that GM won't help us with this.  Clearly there's a problem on their end.

If you are going to attempt to fix this yourself do not use the brush on touch up paint. Use the spray can and make sure you shake the hell out of the can to mix the pigment thoroughly. The longer you leave the peeling paint the more it will peel as moisture gets underneath it and forces it to continue to peel.

FYI - $13 a can at local O'Reilly auto parts vs Amazon. Olympic white and Summit white are the same color just different names Chevy / GMC.

Lots of youtube videos on how to fix yourself. Takes a lot of time, patience, sanding, blending which is why shops charge $$$

Everyone has put me off from dealerships to corporate..I tried Twitter GMC Corporate-they replied but took no responsibility. I posted a lot of the photos of other trucks with exact problem which they didn’t like it did nothing..sad because it is a manufacturing issue.

 GM has had many paint issues going "at least" back to the early to mid-80's,back then it was due to bad primer, I ordered a top line Olds Cutlass Supreme Brougham from the factory in 1984, in a deep Burgundy color.A year later, I waxed and entirely buffed the whole car in the shade, and went in for lunch. Came out, and it looked like the neighbour had cut his lawn and sprayed the clippings all over my car.....but they wouldn't wipe off! Why, because they were cracks filled with white wax. The battle between GM and myself ensued, and lasted well over 6 months....I simply would not let go. In the end, the car was in the shop being entirely stripped to bare metal, and just get moving forward, I agreed to pay 25%, while they paid 75%. So I won and lost, all at the same time.

 

Then don't forget the Chevy and GMC Trucks of the Mid-80's for the same reason....driving down the street with dinner plate sized pieces of paint missing from all kinds of areas. Shame Shame!

Well, I know this is an older thread, but add me to the club.  2015 Sierra 1500 in Bronze Alloy Metallic.  I just noticed peeling today near the window on the driver's side rear door.  It's approximately 1/2" in diameter.

Considering age and mileage of the pickup (125K), I don't expect any help from GMC as it relates to warranty.  I see a class action suit has been filed about the issue in Florida, so I've inquired if the firms have any advice.

If there is a newer, more detailed thread, I apologize, and I will look further.  I just landed here with a Google search about the problem.  If anyone has new pointers, it would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Dave..I have got no where with this problem..I would love to know more about the class action because there is a lot of us out there having this problem. My truck only has 62,000 miles and it’s like 8 inches long, so disappointing they won’t do something..it’s obviously an issue caused when they painted them on the line.

I have a 2014 Sierra with the Tri-Colour White and it started on my rear passenger door. I thought it was rock chips since I didn't have splash guards so whatever I found a shop that would paint that door for $400 CAD. Now my drivers side door (same as everyone else) and my drivers door post is now flaked probably 45-50%.. How can GM turn a blind eye to this??

My paint is also delaminating at my back driver side rear door . I just got a estimate from Hedrick Chevrolet for 2581.00 to replace trim and repaint GM initially told me they would take care of it if the dealer ship diagnosed it as a factory issue and then said they might pay for a some of it know I have not heard back after getting the estimate.

YES WE ARE HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM IN THE SAME SPOT AS YOURS AND SAME COLOR PAINT. We contacted them too and they said same thing we are responsible for it UGH

      I feel better now for my own view point and actions or lack there of towards the dealership service theme reading your post and others. GM corporate is who offers the two free oil changes on the HD trucks and I bought my truck in Feb of 2025 and those oil change offers run out within 2 years I believe and I highly doubt I will be using either one of them. I had asked if I could officially give those free services to another customer ( a friend ) and they said no, its all a GM corporate thing based on the vehicle in question. What that service advisor did however was go into a little story about how such and such customer was denied engine warranty because he had done his own oil changes because then they are not documented ... you see where that goes and so an employee playing the game of scaring the customer into having the service work done there most certainly triggered my thought process. At a later date I did talk to the person who handles warranty claims at the dealership and she said to be sure to document the oil changes and keep receipts for the oil and filter ( coped the receipts from cases of Mobil oil and case of filters I bought from them ) and the vehicles VIN, the date of service, mileage etc and staple that together as a record I would give them if that was ever needed and I keep my own log book for services for each vehicle as well. Oh and about 8 months after I bought the truck the dealer starts calling me to offer a maintenance service since they haven't seen my vehicle show up on their system ... for the mere fee of 300.00 Canadian to change the oil and rotate the tires and a few other minor checks and I declined the offer, I get the call again a couple of months later for the same thing and she could tell I was not interested and she asked if they should take my name off the call list and I said yes, do that !.    By the way did you happen to keep your factory oil filter to open it up and see the surprises inside as I expect some will show up as per the odd little sliver of metal shaving and particles that the filter does trap along with bits of grey silicone sealer that come off of the inside edge of mating surfaces. I have cut open every filter so far on my truck although few miles but have changed the oil often and the second filter was vastly better with very little of anything, that first filter was the unsettling one as I expected it would be.

      I get why they do this…but man…not ideal. I only extract on inboard boat engines because the drains are buried and even then I hate it because it’s easy to leave a quart behind with that method.   They should market it as an “oil refresh” not oil change!

      I only get oil changed where I can watch. Valvoline pulls through the dipstick into a see thru glass. When done they show me the dipstick. About the only way they can mess up is using the wrong oil. But that secret wouldn’t stay secret long. Honda uses TQ wrenches on everything. You can watch through a plate glass window. Discount tires does that with tires. Trust but verify.

      I would not argue that with you. It would be pointless to argue against the truth and you speak the truth.    My question and in fact the entire point of this thread is an exploration into the levers of wear which happens no matter how well we maintain our powertrains.    Some of these levers we exert a good deal of influence over which can and do result is lower wear, longer powertrain life. Some others we are sort of stuck with.    An engine is typically done when the ring to bore seal no longer is able to do the job effectively. Normally the first thing to go in a engine otherwise well maintained and adult driven is this seal.    Looking into the means, methods, products and attitudes that influence the rate of wear seems a worthwhile inquiry to me.
