So giving someone a ride to work one day and he spilled a pan of pot roast all over. Wasn’t really his fault but now my truck smells like fat grease from the pot. I pulled my passenger seat and scrubbed the carpet with stain and oder removal. Also shampooed the carpet about 4 times with a home shampoo/vacuum. The stains are all gone but the smell is still there. Does anyone have any recommendations on tricks to get the smell out? My next option would be saying a detailer to professionally shampoo it followed by replacing the carpet or getting rid of the truck at the extreme. Anyone have any tips or anything?  It’s all cleaned from what I can tell, I pulled the panels off and sipped it all up but can’t get rid of the smell

Another reason I don't give "rides"

Try some lysol plain spray not scented

Febreze, before the ozone thing also put a box of Baking soda make sure it's the one with the mesh on the side or you can just work it onto the carpet and wait a couple of days,  vacuum then repeat, tht lifts the smell right off the carpet.

If you have a good steamer then you may want to try it before the baking soda.

Next time do what  do on my 2017 Silverado is to put in mud floor mats

Fabric softener sheets stuffed under the seats.

 

Old used car trick, works well. Just get one that you like the smell of, and let your wife/girlfriend know so she does not think it is perfume in your truck?

 

How was the roast?

Maybe swap out the cabin air filter for a fresh one as well. If it was a good pot roast with some good home cookin’ smells it could be hanging around in there too.

You can rent an ozone generator.  Careful, they can be harmful to people if used incorrectly, though I doubt it would happen in this case.  In a home, you can’t be in the room when running one.

 

You could also try charcoal.  They sell bags of it specifically meant for oder control for things like cars and closets . . .

 

One time we spilled milk in our van.  Nasty.  After our attempts failed, we took it to a detailer. His attempts failed too.  Finally, the thing that worked was to seal the smell in.  He used a Scotch Guard type of product that is meant to seal carpet from stains.  Well it basically worked in reverse too by sealing in the smell.

 

Good luck.  Hopefully you won’t have to replace the carpet.  You won’t have to replace the truck - unless you want to :)

It’s probably in the carpet pad under the carpet. Pull the carpet and replace the pad or maybe clean it.

Depending on the smell, that could be a good thing?

 

Just want to make sure it is not something that makes you hit very drive through on the way home.....No honey, i had a big lunch and am not hungry for dinner?

the ones you rent are big and made for homes. also are expensive to rent.

 

yeah you don't want to breath ozone in. just follow the directions and you wont have any issues.

 

its the only sure way to actually get rid of bad smells. our truck was a smokers but you would never know thanks to the ozone generator. the one on amazon for $60 is small and portable I highly recommend  it. it will get rid of the smell 100% and couldnt be any easier to use.

Broke a glass bottle of milk in a 76 Ford. That smell on a hot day is forever.

Tried that. Still it remained. I think the smell gets absorbed into every soft surface in the cabin.

We didn't have Fabreze back then but combine the two.....maybe? 

 

Dog goes with me everywhere so the cabin now smells like dog unless freshly cleaned.

Fabreze unsented after a good shampoo of the upholstery works like a charm.

Yankee Candle vent stick in Leather.

 

I also cover the seats with towels. Every surface.

Those hit the laundry often soaking up most of the air born smells.

Capture Carpet cleaner. Let it sit, it’s a amazing. I’ve seen it take stains and smells out of white carpet.

We carry our dog and our vehicles and every now and then we run a small ozonator machine for about half an hour and it does a great job clearing out dog smell mold smell it smells like fresh Mountain Air when it's all done a hint is to run your vents while you are running the ozonator makes a world of difference

      Why don't I have a good scanner? I've always wanted one when I've needed one.   My latest reading says I don't need to do a relearn on the ckp sensor on a 1995 with OBD 1.5. The relearn is prescribed for the later-model 1995's which shipped with actual OBD II when GM completed the transition in prep for the 1996 MY. I need to confirm that. Did you know forums are disappearing? Knuckleheads on Facebook... it's not the same. It's just not.   So, scanners. Again, shooting myself in the foot for having eBayed my Snap On MT2500 "brick" with all the adapters. Not that I couldn't buy another but those are getting quite old, and mine wasn't new enough to work on 2000's vehicles.   Damn it (as I'm scanning my email between paragraphs here). Did you know there's a 2000 Jimmy 2-door on BaT that's ending this morning? It's local. I want it. 14k miles. Absolutely beautiful.   Back to scanners. MT2500's are old. Solus, now that could be a contender. There's a ~2008 Verus with a system error that's basically new in box for cheap. Hmm...I'm not sure about a scanner that runs an archaic version of windows (95 or CE, I can't tell).   I want the ability to reset and rotate TPMS, test individual modules, bleed ABS, electronic parking brake controls for servicing brakes, relearn procedures and other bidirectional controls.   Snap On does an MT2600. It's a new model as of last year, marketed as their "entry" scanner. Entry? Only where $1900 gets you through the doorway plus, I'm guessing, $1000/year if you wish to keep it current. So goes scan tools actually designed for production environments. Want decent products with excellent support, you pay for it.   Everyone is raving about Autels and TopDons and Foxconns and all these newer brands that are selling the $500 "prosumer" scanners for backyard hacks like me. They're tempting...honestly. Updates are cheaper, base prices are remarkably cheaper... And you get to deal with bugs and translation whoopsies and, well, just don't use it on anything expensive, OK? Having a dealer replace an ECU because it needs to be re-imaged after an adventure in scanning is no joke. But I think most people are getting by OK with these units.   eBay on a scratch-and-sniff pro-model oldie, a shiny new TopDon, or???   God dang it, I can't stop looking at this Jimmy. I'm ready! I'll Bring The TRailer! It's beautiful.

      I removed the OE running boards.  It looked so much better.  I wish I took them off a long time ago.     I had to put something back on for my wife.  I wanted Westin Sure Grip Running Boards but they are very pricey, like $600 plus.  I was going to go with the Ionic 41's like I had on the 2019 Silverado but went with Westin Outlaw Drop Steps instead, about $200 cheaper.  They are sturdy and functional but not super crazy about the look, but it works.
