Has anyone here serviced the differentials and transfer case? Just picked up the GM fluid Dexron VI for the case and the special high efficiency front and rear diff. fluid. 10-4091. Guess there is not a drain plug for the front. Do a lot of towing want to change out fluids early.

I haven't performed the tasks yet but I was planning to at 50K miles per the requested service interval in the owners manual for the transfer case.  Are you sure there is no drain plug for the front differential?  I haven't looked yet, but that sounds pretty odd as they are regularly maintenanced item I would think. 

 

Let us know how it goes since I plan on swapping out fluids for all three items in the near future and it would be great to have you as a "test mule" :)

Cover has to be removed for the front axle and rear axle.  Gasket is not re-usable for either one per the manual, must be replaced.

The rear axle seal was re-usable (RPO SU7). 

Front axle was not re-usable, $13 gasket, there are some wiring harness tree-clips(not sure exactly the clip type) on the cover itself at the 11ish-oclock location. (RPO SU4).

Hmm.  Service manual shows for all axle RPO codes that the gasket is to be discarded and replaced with a new one.  We haven't had any open for maintenance at work so just going by the GM manual.

If i were to do it again (in another 28k miles), i would buy the rear/gasket axle seal (probably $15). It was the same style as my 2005 canyon and the dealer told me that it was a re-usable seal/gasket, and i assumed i could re-use it. i have roughly 2k miles on it now and no leaks. I did clean it really well and kept it dry (per instructions on the internet) while reinstalling.

I changed out the fluid in the front and rear differentials.  The front I sucked out since the harness for the power steering and other stuff was in the way.  I didn't feel like messing with that.  The rear I pulled the cover off, cleaned up the magnet and put it back on using the original seal.  So far 20k miles no leaks.

Today I had a fight with the chev dealership about changing the axel lub front and rear. They said and I quote, we just remove the fill plug and suck out the oil and put in new. To remove the cover is old school. I said to them after getting a full refund " if you want the job done right, do it yourself". More and more i hear how all dealships riping off people more and more. This is third world crap and it's time to call them out on this .

I see nothing wrong using suction to remove fluids. I did it with my transmission on  my avalanche and if it didn’t have a drain plug on the differential I would have done it there too. It cuts down on the mess. If you wanted to inspect it still would be less messy. If you had asked for an inspection of the gears they probably would do it and charged more money. I don’t see a problem.

They were being honest since electronics wires bundle is in way.

What does the service manual say about service interval for front/rear differentials on the current generation? 

 

A few years back there was an interval in the owners manual, instructions on method and a list of fluids to use.

Looking at the 2024 owner's manual for a 1500, the only fluid they call for a change interval for severe use is the transfer case every 50,000mi.  Oh and transmission every 45,000mi.  Normal use, transfer case every 100,000mi.

 

For 2024 HD, normal use its transfer case every 50,000mi, severe use its every 25,000mi.  Transmission is only called out for severe use, every 45,000mi.  

 

Neither schedule calls for front and rear axle lubricant replacement.  I even went back to 2010, no diff servicing mentioned then either in the maintenance charts.  

 

 

Thinking on this, AAM was sole and is still a supplier to GM for axles.  I seem to recall AAM had a tech note or something from them about diff fluids.  Good luck if I can find it now, but they actually called for an oil change at 500mi on their products due to their initial break-in.  GM calls for that 500mi, but they mention nothing about changing the diff lubes out.

I change the diff's fluids out after 500 miles. Like you stated to get the wear-in materials out and get fresh fluid back in. I know most don't do it.  I've done it now on my last truck and this truck.  I then go 100k.  My last UOA on my 2002 showed all was well at 100k.

    • Have considered installing a DC to DC charger in your camper to replace your isolator?  
    • Common failure.  You need to replace the fuel door housing.   The painted cover transfers over to the new housing.  To remove the old one there is 4 spots where you poke the plastic to release it.  
    • No such thing as regenerative braking on a pure ICE vehicle.     Regenerative braking is the re-capture of energy from electric motors and stores it in the battery pack.  So hybrids, PHEV and EVs have regenerative braking.     What you are seeing is the charging system changing modes is all.  Its likely entering charge mode for some sort of reason is all.  All of the charging modes will be listed below.   As for L10 vs D.  L10 turns off automatic grade braking.  L10 puts you in control of grade downshifts where in D it will automatically do it based on brake pedal position and other factors.  Otherwise L10 and D drive exactly the same aside from that one aspect.    Battery Sulfation Mode The BCM will enter this mode when the interpreted Generator output voltage is less than 13.2 V for 45 minutes. When this condition exists the BCM will enter Charge Mode for 2–3 minutes. The BCM will then determine which mode to enter depending on voltage requirements.   Charge Mode The BCM will enter Charge Mode when ever one of the following conditions are met:   Windshield wipers are ON for more than 3 s. Climate Control Voltage Boost Mode Request is true, as sensed by the HVAC control module via serial data. High speed cooling fan, rear defogger, and HVAC high speed blower operation can cause the BCM to enter the Charge Mode. The estimated battery temperature is less than 0°C (32°F). Battery State of Charge is less than 80%. Vehicle speed is greater than 145 km/h (90 mph) A current sensor malfunction exists. System voltage is determined to be below 12.56 V When any one of these conditions is met, the system will set targeted generator output voltage to a charging voltage between 13.9–15.5 V, depending on the battery state of charge and estimated battery temperature.   Fuel Economy Mode The BCM will enter Fuel Economy Mode when the estimated battery temperature is at least 0°C (32°F) but less than or equal to 80°C (176°F), the calculated battery current is less than 15 A and greater than −8 A, and the battery state-of-charge is greater than or equal to 80%. Its targeted generator output voltage is the open circuit voltage of the battery and can be between 12.5–13.1 V. When fuel economy mode is active, the generator is not charging, only maintaining open circuit battery voltage. The BCM will exit this mode and enter Charge Mode when any of the conditions described above are present.   Headlamp Mode The BCM will enter Headlamp Mode when ever the head lamps are ON (high or low beams). Voltage will be regulated between 13.9–14.5 V.   Start Up Mode When the engine is started the BCM sets a targeted generator output voltage of 14.5 V for 30 s.   Tow/Haul Mode (if applicable) Pressing the Tow/Haul Mode button located on the center stack, the vehicle system voltage is raised and the remote (non-vehicle) battery will be charged. Having the headlamps on will raise the system voltage and if the Tow/Haul button is applied it will not serve any purpose. The voltage is regulated between 13.9-14.5 V.      
    • Hello from Australia Just sharing that there is now a way to delete the active shutters entirely with just a plug in module. Opens up tons of room to light bars etc.
    • I have an observation and a question... 1) I watch the voltage closely because I have had to dial in the cut-in/cut-out voltages of the battery separator to my camper.  The "smart" charging drives me nuts.  Anyway, I noticed that when coasting for a while, and especially if lightly using the brakes (though not necessary), the voltage goes up from mid/high-13 volts to mid/high-14 volts.  Then it drops back down after stopping or going again.  Consistently!   The only explanation I can come up with is REGENERATIVE BRAKING!  Well, maybe that's a little bit of an exaggeration, but it's certainly free extra battery charging.   2) Driving on mountain roads I will use L and vary the max gear.  Things straighten out and I end up in L10.  Sometimes I leave it there for a while.  Is there any difference between L10 and D?
