Riding down the interstate today, I saw my temps go over 210. Not just a smidge but Id say a good bit. When I got off the interstate and not going quite as fast it was still high to me. I am used to seeing the temps not go over 210. Is this normal? It was a balmy 61 degrees. Also, stopped at a light, it looked like the oil pressure was sitting about 25. Is this also normal? All normal, mine runs the same temps year around as to the oil pressure also, pressure goes up as engine speed increases nothing to worry about

Ok awesome. It just seems so out of the norm to go over 210. I mean 210 seems hot as it is but even higher is crazy. Not to mention oil pressure going to 25. Thanks for the quick response.

Nope it's abnormal... engineered in failure by 80k miles,, the bonded pistons, seals and rubber o-rings will harden , crack and leak and fail at this temp  fast!

 

target temp should be 145

I wonder if the grille shutters weren't opened all the way for whatever reason.  I'd get a nice bluetooth OBD like OBDLinkMX+ and the Torque app or OBDLink's app that way if you see this again, you can read actual coolant temp from the ECM rather than the dash gauge.  For example, the 2020 I'm driving at work to set readiness monitors, the gauge reads "210" but the actual ECU coolant temp is like 195-200.

Uh.  That gauge that is just over 210 in OPs picture is engine coolant temp, not trans temp.

So its normal or not normal? My trans temp was about 167-169 when this was going on down the interstate etc.

My 22 LTZ like yours runs a tick above 210.

Mine has more oil pressure though. Running down the highway at 70 its about 55-60 lbs.

At a stoplight it goes down to around 35-40 lbs.

The gages aren't 100% accurate too.

That is perfectly fine for the trans temp. It will fluctuate up and down, depending on driving conditions and weather. That is not hot by factory specs.

I knew the trans was good. Was just pointing out what it was. The temp gauge was reading about midway between 210 and the next hash mark. I just ran it back down the road about 50-55 and it was just a bit over 210. I did have the Pulsar LT on it during the drive home. Not sure if that had anything to do with it mind you but I pulled it off when I lost 3MPG. As much as I love it being a V8 all the time, I dont want to loose that much. Not sure whats up with the 22s but the 21 Sierra got 20 easy with no DFM. Cutting this one off it dropped for 20-21 to 17ish.

 

@dieselfan1As for oil pressure, Mine running down the highway is about 50-55. The 21 Sierra was about like yours is now which is about what I am used to.

So, I guess we are gonna go with its normal. Ill stop worrying about it then. Next up, figure out what exhaust to put on while keeping DFM.

167 is ok, but wouldnt exceed that temp

When it gets full on summer here, who knows what it will do. The 2016 Silverado I had got up to 190 before flipping the pill.

Ha, ha... fortunately not "normal" yet but becoming more commonplace. It's worthwhile having a dashcam to record the eventual outcomes.

Talked to service department today. Apparently 210-225 is normal for this truck. Apparently the fans do not even kick on til 225. Funnier though that it runs that hot running down the interstate but in town it sits just above 210. I did throw my handheld on it and it idles about 215.6. Sure does seem hot to me but I guess there isnt much I can do if they programed the fans to come on so late.

    • Well one of our most reliable vehicles was sold yesterday. The first and only I gave for free to a grandkid. If they got skin in the game they take care of it. My wife bought new. Five years later my daughter got it to use. We got it back and gave it to our grandson after graduation. He did zero maintenance just oil changes. When the AC quit he drove his mother’s car rather than get it fixed. Instead he just bought a beater and sold the Elantra.

If an oil sample tests shows a wear indicator of 7 using cheaper ACDelco oil, and a wear indicator of 2 (lower = less wear) using a particular brand of Mobil oil, and wear has a linear relationship with engine lifespan, anyone could assume that Mobil is reducing wear by more than 50% (let's just say a 200% reduction for you red state people trying hard to do math) which leads to increasing engine life by 2x. Perhaps, in a vacuum, by itself, when dreamed by AI.   Yeah?! That's what the statistic is saying, isn't it?   No, it isn't. It didn't come out and say engine life is doubled. That's a very bad assumption, and a case of severe myopia by assuming something potentially untrue about the only data point in focus.   Average cost of a new car is 50k. You bet it is.   The median cost of a new car is more like 35k. Expensive cars are skewing the perception that "average" now means a $50k price of entry for a very average automobile. And that's not true. People who don't understand statistics twist the living heck out of them to mean all sorts of things they don't actually mean.   "Average" new car payment is $1000/month. Yep, it is. And in that number are all the $35k new car buyers who bring significant equity, and the $25k new car buyers who finance the car for a month just to get a rebate, and then pay it off. Know what isn't in that number? All the payments made by people who don't finance a car.   Picking one's own data point (don't have a car payment, never paid $50k for a new vehicle, my house cost $170k, I afforded a middle class lifestyle on $4.50/hr) is just a data point. Just like earning $25/hr in an area where the median home price is almost $1 Million is a data point. In fact, it's a lot of data points given that 80% of the US population lives in/around major cities. They're not idiots; the vast majority of them do it to make a living because that's where the big money is.   The highs have become higher, lows have become lower, and how your personal mileage varies is not truth for an entire country. At the same time you can't NOT acknowledge the data. While it doesn't paint YOUR personal picture, it certainly tints the reality that you also live in, as does your single data point.
