6.2 Engine. Changed my oil last night. Did the usual drained the oil hot with fill cap unscrewed, removed the filter. Reinstalled the drain plug with a new crush washer, and new filter (dry) with some oil on the gasket, drained catch can and then Refilled with 2 gallons of 0/20 Amsoil signature. I start the truck and as it’s idling for like 2 minutes I hear a little knock noise every couple of seconds (sounds like ac clutch engaging kind of). Sounded like valve train noise. I shut down restart the truck drive, around the block and did not hear it again? Is this a result of not filling the filter with oil first ? Do I have anything to worry about ? Is that the oil pump re priming

Can't answer your question but I have always pre filled oil filters. The oil pressure comes up quicker, good for the bearings.

Some say you will introduce unfiltered/dirty oil by pre-filling filter.

I say, dirty oil is better than no oil.

Fuel filters are a different story now days. Dirty fuel is worse than no fuel.

Ok, for people from Rio Linda. Don’t use the old oil in the new filter or change your oil during a sand storm. In other words new oil out of the bottle. Right after you retrieve your filter from its environmental sealed vault. Oh I forgot make sure you pressure wash the underneath around the oil pan especially. If you really want to be sure paper and tape the entire area the filter may pass on the way to be installed. Don’t forget the hairnet.

Everytime I have changed the oil in my truck pre-fill or not I hear the valve tick about every 5 seconds or so sounds like 1 or 2 ticking maybe 3 valve ticks then its gone till I change the oil again

Never got that noise with Pennzoil or Mobil, might be the problem right there...

I used to pre fill the filter, but then I started doing clear flood mode so the engine would not start until oil pressure came up.

I only pre-fill diesel truck oil filters, never done it on my own gas vehicles. The bearing already got oil on them for the 2-3 seconds it takes to rebuild that 40-50psi of oil pressure, so I'm not concerned.

Many vehicles the oil filter is sideways or a cartridge filter, so you can't prefill them anyway.

If the oil filter is mounted in a way that allows it to be filled before installing, give me one good reason not to prefill it. Lazy?

I cant think of one reason why you shouldn't fill the oil filter before installing it, if at all possible.

Ticking is a typical sound I will hear for a second or two on startup after performing an oil change, regardless of oil type, and I experience it on all of my vehicles.  If it lasts for longer than a second or two I might would start to worry.

The one thing that comes to mind is lifter filling.  GM has a known bulletin on this in where during a cold start these engines may have an intermittent knock/tick comming from the lifters.  If the noise goes away within 5-7 minutes, there is no issue.

See below:

Quote

19-NA-218: Ticking Noise from the Engine

Allow the engine to sit overnight.

Note: You may need to allow 5-7 minutes to confirm.

  1. Start the vehicle and listen for a tick noise.
    • If a tick noise is present, proceed to the next step.
    • If a tick noise is NOT present after running engine for at least 5 to 7 minutes, release the vehicle back to the customer.
  2. Drive the vehicle through the DFM modes.
  3. Check for any misfire DTCs and record:
    • If DTCs are found, refer to SI for diagnosis.
    • If no DTCs are found and noise still persists, operate the engine through cylinder Deactivation test to isolate the cylinder with the concern.
  4. If the noise has been isolated, inspect for a bent pushrod and/or collapsed lifter.
    • If the pushrods are found to be in working condition, replace the lifters on the affected banks. Refer to Valve Lifter Replacement in SI.

I have owned over 40 vehicles in my lifetime and have never pre-filled a filter. Never had an issue either. If it makes you feel better do it. Is is necessary? The answer is no. I've heard of people doing it, but it really does not hurt either way.

When I worked for a dealership in my younger days we never pre-filled any filters. I rarely do on my personal vehicles either.

Never hurts to prefill for sure.

Other question is why did you install a crush washer.  These do not need them.  The o-ring is built into the drain plug.  Over 200k miles on my old 2002 silverado and never a drop from the factory  plug with the built in o-ring.
