Onstar Speaker???

Recommended Posts

I have a 2005 Sierra Z71... It is not equipped with onstar, but I think it has the capability. There is a speaker on the drivers side of the headliner, positioned right where you would speak into it. I assume this comes equipped on all new trucks, right? Anyways I bought this truck brand new, and have never noticed anything until about two weeks ago. I hear like a static fuzz/white noise type of sound coming from this speaker. I asked the dealer, and they said it may be the radio, but it does it even when the radio is turned off. Is this a conspiracy?? Is big brother watching me?? Are my conversations being recorded through this speaker?? :seeya: Seriously though, I am about to pop the cover off and cut the wires.

I hate to say it, but big brother watches everything we do...So be sure and make your conversations as fun as possible. It'll provide you with a good jail story later on.

First off,If your truck does not have On-Star you cannot add it,It must be factory installed.

Secondly,The speaker your talking about is actually called an "Aspirator".It is for the automatic climate control,Heres a bulletin on it......

Subject: Buzz Noise From Headliner Above Driver - keywords ac air aspirator cover fan grille HVAC interior microphone sensor speaker temperature vent vibration #PIT3511 - (03/29/2005)

Models: 2000-05 Cadillac Escalade

2002-05 Chevrolet Avalanche

2000-05 Chevrolet Silverado, Suburban, Tahoe

2000-05 GMC Sierra, Yukon, Yukon XL, Yukon Denali

The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in the PI.

Condition/Concern:

Dealer or customer may comment that they have a buzz or vibration noise emanating from the headliner in an area that looks like microphone or a speaker.

Recommendation/Instructions:

The plastic escutcheon grill, which is round and about the size of a half dollar and located just above the driver to the left, is the interior ambient temperature sensor. The sensor is used in conjunction with the automatic HVAC (C68). On occasions, this sensor has been known to make a buzz or rattle sound. The sensor uses a small fan to pull air over the sensor. This buzz noise may be intermittent.

Although it may not be possible to alleviate all of the buzz or noise from this sensor, Engineering has found that if the sensor is installed incorrectly that it may bind and cause the fan to make a buzz noise. Remove the sensor and while doing so check for any binding. Reinstall the sensor and re-test. If the noise is still present, the sensor itself may be noisy and require replacement.

Please follow this diagnosis process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed.

GM bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, NOT a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform these technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions, and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, DO NOT assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See your GM dealer for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.

Wow - do I feel like an idiot :seeya: - I thought that was a speaker - called the dealer and bitched about it. They must have had a good laugh. Oh well - as long as I made them laugh instead of angry.

Now - I know what to do. Thanks for the info.

Did you get it fixed? Mine is doing the same thing and is out of warranty. If it needs replacing what is the $?

Two GMC Denali trucks in the family and both of the sensors (I thought it was a mic or speaker) vibrate. Of course, both are out of warranty - how do you remove the sensor? Does the cover twist, pry off?

I know this is an old thread but maybe it will help someone else.

Just changed mine. Part number is 25771194 . I got mine from P&G chevrolet online: www.partszoneonline.com I paid $28.51 for it.

You need to access it by prying the round grill off from the inside. I almost destroyed mine prying it off, also trying not to destroy the headliner. You might want to order a new grille with the new aspirator. That is what holds it into place. I needed to pull the door seal down and pull the headliner down to gain access to the aspirator.

I finally decided to "dig" into this on my '01 Yukon XL as the buzzing is driving me nuts...... :)

Can someone that's removed it, chime in? I was able to get two of the prongs on the plastic grill cover off, with one to go. It kinda looks like the fan will be free floating inside the headliner when the cover is off. Do I have to pull down that side of the headliner to access the aspirator or is there an easier way to do it? Does it have to replaced or is there something than can be done to get some more life out of it? Thanks much.

My '07 Silverado (new body style) does this as well. Only when it's cold though and only at idle. After about 7-10 minutes after startup it goes away. Now it makes more sense knowing it's not a speaker but an air sensor.

Yeah...mine was buzzing pretty bad, and my climate control wasn't performing properly, so I decided to replace the aspirator. I pulled the cover off without much effort, and then (of course) discovered that it left the aspirator free-floating above the headliner. I had to remove the driver's side visor and loosen the A- and B-pillar trim pieces before I could get my '03 crew cab headliner down JUST far enough to reach it. I replaced it with a new part and snapped it together with the original cover easily. That resolved my HVAC issues, although I occasionally still hear a faint buzz from the aspirator.

Hey, what is the trick to removing the A- and B-pillar trim pieces? I don't really want to break them to figure out what holds them in. :)
