Muffler location

Was curious and did a little research... and from what I came up with is the further back a muffler is placed the quieter the wave pulses are.. so my question is will it effect the vehicles performance if the muffler is changed back further or closer to the engine... long story short I'm redoing my exhaust soon and I have some ideas in mind...

As long as you didn't make the exhaust really short I would l wouldn't think it would matter much.

Also I had better luck changing the pulse sound via the length of the tailpipe, moving muffler didn't matter too much. Don't think you would be able to tell if any performance loss occurred having the muffler in different positions along the way.

That's what I've been reading upon... I haven't seen anybody saying anything about loosing performance
