Part of the issue is this "brine" solution they now spray on the roads before a storm. This stuff is like acid. It used to be just the highways. Now my town is doing it. I can hear my Burb rusting as I drive over it. All that can be done is back to rustproofing and oiling and waxing all the exterior including the chrome and aluminum every few months.

If you think the metal is thin on these trucks, check out the new cars. It is only going to get worse as manufacturers try to meet the new CAFE standards.

Also every industry has a staff of people that have to justify their existance every year by cutting cost. It is a never ending downward spiral of less value to the consumer for money spent.

One thing I would say about these cars though is that they are much more trouble free than they ever have been in the past. Also, the fuel economy and safety cannot be beat. We have lightweight cars that can protect us during a crash. That never used to be the case. You could have one or the other, but not both. So yes, they have their problems, but modern cars are SUPERIOR.

I have had 2 GMT900 trucks, a 2008, and my current 2010 Xfe, and both have rust behind the tailpipe on the rear bumper. I had wondered if the afm is causing some sort of excessively corrosive exhaust puff when it activates or shuts off, but it is probably just crappy bumpers. Either way, I'll be heading to the ealer to get a new bumper soon as the snow is gone for the year (that way I'll have a summer of shiny bumper)

The front bumper on my truck is made from aluminum foil from Dollar General. The BIG ugly plastic bulbs on each end are hideous at best (they can't rust but will chip to pieces with age and crack)... (yellow comes to mind with age)!

I am looking for a CLEAN late model 2000-2007 model truck, I think I am done with this 2009 model the sad part is I only have 18,000 miles on it and purchased the extended warranty as well up to 100,000 on all other items.

The front end is another sore point for me, I have to put on a leveling/lift kit to put 285's on it for goodness sake more money and a front end alignment.

My 2003 Z71 had 180,000 miles on it and I lived on dirt roads, it was a rattle trap and still the interior/exterior did not feel cheap.

The AFM is another mistake, no more new trucks for me, I will buy used here on out. The sad part is most of the late model trucks are USED up down south and abused.

My 2003 Z71 5.3 had the defective cylinder heads both replaced by the extended warranty for $100 deductible it was over $2,500 in repairs.

It was not perfect but it actually felt like a truck and not a plastic bed-liner door panels with no padding!
