I spent my Thursday through sunday at the silver lake sand dunes jeep invasion.. my 06 is still at the shop and the 86 did nothing all weekend. I drove the boyfriends 2012 duramax and his 78 cj7 with a built sbc 350 and turbo 400 trans. I told him its ok to have a jeep if its chevy powered lmao

That right there is one of the best drivelines EVER. Bulletproof engine, bulletproof transmission. Only thing better is a big block mated to that TH400.   The company that built that now has AFM valve trains to their credit. What the hell happened?

Never knew there were dunes in MI until just recently. Must be a blast. Closest thing we had in MA was a couple tiny sand pits to ride in the same spots over, and over, and over ... until somebody would crash,  & their greedy and misguided parents (and lawyers) would sue, and get the place closed down to riding forever. That brings us to today where off-roading is just about completely banned in this area.

I've been wanting to hit Glamis since I was a pre-teen. Sad part of that is, I lived within driving distance of there for 2 years, but didn't have the dough for anything fun to ride or drive there. Had a CBR600F2 at the time, but riding that in sand wouldn't have ended well ...

At least in AZ, you could build a ATV, sand rail, or crazy lifted 4x4, easily make it street-legal, and DRIVE it to Glamis. Miss that place.

its got some power but doesn't seem like enough, we ended up grenading the fly wheel... seems like it was on its way out anyway though

The TH400 also has a 2.48
first gear that makes it seem doggy. They're strong but geared weak for acceleration.

we raced it on the sand drag strip up there a few times and it was doggy at first but once we got going it was a monster

TH400s might be strong but the power loss is atrocious with them.

I never noticed. Always had healthy engines ahead of them. :D

The 700r4 / 4L60 has a great first gear ... but it needs a "1.5" gear in between 1st and 2nd. The jump is STUPID! My truck will drop from 5 grand to 2,700 on a 1-2 upshift. Same as the first 700r4's back in the 80's.

If you can, without detonating it to pieces (be careful), advancing the timing will bring the power down towards the low end and midrange more. The right stall converter will also make a huge difference too, especially if you've got a huge cam in there. 1,000 RPM higher can turn it into a missile off the line.

well we don't have much room to work with because chevy decided to put distributers in the back on that motor which is horrible for trying to time anything. especially in a cj7 and with the MSD HEI back there which takes up every millimeter of space back there.. we had a hell of a time timing that thing the best we could get it.  it was so touchy that it ran like hell too far or too little. it does need some carb work though which is a big chunk of our issue.

I sold my neighbor's nephew's CJ about 6 years ago. Had a TBI 350 in there, and that distributor was right up on the firewall. That sucked!

Same with my '89 s10 Blazer that I did an engine swap with a '00 Jimmy, sans FI and all electronics. Had a TON of trouble with the cheap, eBay HEI distributor assemblies I kept putting in there. I think I was on my 3rd one that failed, when I yanked it out AGAIN, and installed all Echlin ignition parts from NAPA (with some painstaking modification) - fixed all the gremlins I had with it that I swore were fuel related. What a PITA getting the things out of there. Got pretty good at it by the 3rd time ... ?

Loved that thing - took me a while, but I had it dialed in PERFECT just before I sold it. Body rotted away to nothing. I had sanded and spray painted all the rust spots at least 10 times - was nothing left of the rockers by then, & fenders & doors were getting real thin. Would've kept it otherwise.

Only lost .5 mpg going from FI to carb, but gained a TON of power, and a 100% improvement in throttle response.?

He put a 4.3 from a 2000 S -series Jimmy in a first gen S-series Blazer. I put a 245hp TPI 350 out of an Iroc, in an Sonoma years ago, and it was a little rocket ship. A squirrelly rocket ship, but a blast. I want to stick an LS in one with a turbo now.

^^^ What Daly said .

Mine was a fun, peppy daily driver, but no comparison to a 350 - s10's became REAL fun with a V8 under the hood. Even better with a LS turbo - that would be friggin sweet.
