MSD wores caused a misfire on my 6.0

I've heard good and bad about their stuff. When I had my Z28 everyone that bought their Optispark usually had trouble with them. I've never used anything of theirs myself.

MSD used to be great stuff. Seems they've followed the path so many other great brands have gone ... :nonod:

 

I did my plugs around 75k or so, fearing they'd seize in the head if I waited to 100k. Was shocked GM actually used anti-seize compound on them. Miracles never cease! Used NGK Iridium, which is identical in every way to the OEM Delcos it came with. Kept the wires. The things are only 4" long - can't see them going bad this quick ... although lots of things automotive-related surprise me today ...

The only MSD wires I had fail were the 8mm ones.. the 8.5 mm ones have always been great and I still use them. A lot of their ignition stuff is junk though.

Accel is another brand that went down the toilet. I used a set of their wires, & cap & rotor on my S10 Blazer carb / HEI conversion. The wires had thousands of ohms more resistance than the old ones I took out. The cap/rotor look no better than the no-name stuff made in china these days. Sad.

The Fiancé and I took the truck to get dinner. Still having a weird issue with my A/C. I think it's something electronic mainly the control unit since it's messed up already anyhow.

GM electronic climate control systems are really bad. The ones from the 2000s would mimic bad compressor or low freon symptoms, making diagnosing those cars a huge pain. Pretty much EVERY automatic climate unit on W body cars had issues . If there is one still driving around with its original unit functionaling properlythey(over 100k miles) need to seal that thing in a air tight container and put it in the Smithsonian. And the buttons on the 900s.... I have read the systems on the 6th gen Camaros are having some problems also.

Yea, I'm not sure if mine is the original one, but if it is I'm suprised it's still working at all. A new one on Ebay is $120.

So I noticed that the picture of the truck I found with the Z71 emblem in the grille had it mounted a little lower than mine is. So I took the grille off and modified the mount some more to make it work. Looks a lot better in my opinion.

msd and accel, just know what you are looking for.

I use the 8.8 accel hot rod kit to make my own equal lnegth.

 

the msd 6530 runs a 1985 optical disty (first in the world) on my subaru... plug a lap top in and set the flat curve the boxer worships.

incredible stuff.

 

a lot of it is outdated out done.. just gotta be in the loop of what is evolving, what to throw away.

the 8.8 wires is silicon zero bleed, with kevlar and other goodies.

 

 

for my truck today, helped a neighbor move...4 trips the past 2 days actually.

I welded the back end, wanted to load it up with 1000# or so to see how it did anyway.

no problems at all.

I am also using hellwigs under the ubolt version (real version to me)

the truck was sitting level, thought nothing of it loaded.

I did not help them load it, so to my surprise unloading was a seeming endless pile of crates into 100 and 200 pounds a piece.

I laughed at the thought of 1500 pounds in the bed of my squashy half ton sitting level. I did not know it could be that good.

Smart idea. I've both seen and also heard of a good number of GM & Ford Trucks with seized plugs in the heads. "But they said I could go 100,000 miles on these plugs!"

Well yeah, they went 100,000 miles, and spent a lot of extra $$$ to get them removed as a result. And yes most of the time those plugs that came out at 100,000 miles looked like they had some life left on them, it was the fact that they were practically welded to the head that they didn't factor in. The Fords were especially bad. :rollin:

Seems like the Fords had issues keeping them IN the head, haha. I antisiezed and torqued mine to spec. Hopefully they'll come out as easily as the originals.

I've never had an issue with seized plugs when I put a good coat of antiseize on them. I actually have more issues with getting the boots off the spark plug end, and yes, I even coat the crap out of them with dielectric

The Fords would seize in the previously Helicoiled head on round 2, even WITH anti-seize. Now that's some engineering right there! :smash:

 

 

My truck has become a workbench, due to a "few hour" A/C job in our '93 Volvo 940 that morphed into a 7-day cluster***k.

 

Wrong condenser .... wrong accumulator ... wrong suction line ... unobtanium liquid line that twisted in half - 4 days, $50, & 90 miles of city driving to get one custom built. Even that got screwed up - would've had to wait 2 weeks for the correct fittings, so told them to use what they had NOW, which was a 90° when I needed STRAIGHT.

 

Managed after 3 full hours to bend, tweak, and fight the suction line into submission, finally installing it into the compressor. Batting 1,000 with this one. What a friggin hacked mess! Who wants to place bets on if I have any leaks after tweaking and bending these hoses all afternoon? :banghead:

 

I did a complete 100% system replacement in our '86 Grand Marquis, and it didn't take half this long, even with the wrong condenser (Rock Auto ... again! At least their return system is easy).

    • It wouldn’t have happened if the government hadn’t mandated outrageous fuel mileage standards. It does very little for the consumer. It adds cost. Back during Covid there was a chip shortage. They gave a rebate for your truck if it didn’t have the chip to turn on cylinder deactivation. It was 50$ because at best you may see 1/2 a mile increase per gallon. Splitting hairs each fuel mileage trick wasn’t mandated. The government doesn’t do the engineering work and say use this until it’s already in use and they like it. The fuel mileage was mandated. And those add ons the results. There’s a mandate and they are the results.
    • It was never mandated.  Ever.    Automakers were incentivized to install it by getting CAFE credits to help with their vehicle fleet fuel economy scores.  They were being handed money/CAFE credits to install it.  Which is NOT a mandate.       The current admin removed the incentives that were behind them installing it.
