On the outside, nothing. On the inside you have 41 more cubic inches. Longer stroke so more torque, larger bore more HP. Your 5.3 is rated 285/325, my 6.0 is factory rated 345/385. I have the "High Output" version from the Silverado SS/Escalade/Vortec Max/05-07 Sierra Denali

And the LQ4 is severely under-rated...... even in stock form in the Denali Suv's and such it was 325/330 HP and 370 lb ft versus the 300 HP and 360 lb ft in the HD's.... What's the difference? The HD's have power enrichment delay that the light duty trucks do not...... and...... the LQ4 in the HD is rated at 4400 rpm only whereas in the light duty stuff it was rated at 5200 rpm like the LQ9. Funny thing is in stock form an HD still revs to 5200 rpm WOT shifting lol. The LQ9 has a better tune, but not by a lot. Either engine properly tuned will make your 5.3 feel lethargic... even if it's tuned. 44 cubes, better heads and the 4" bore do that....

 

The only difference between an LQ4 and a LQ9 is flat top pistons in the 9 giving it the 10:1 compression ratio versus the 4 at 9.4:1. 04.5 and older LQ4's have weaker press fit pin rods... but 04 and a half model year and newer they have have the same heavy duty floating pin rod the 9 used.

 

Swapping a 5.3 for a 6 liter is a great investment no matter how you look at it.

 

I have both LQ4's and a LQ9...... my LQ9 makes a nice lawn ornament currently lol.

The 04 up 9's have better connecting rods as well. I had an aggressively tuned 4.8 and I would never go back to anything under 6 liters again

LQ9's have had the heavy duty rod from the start excluding some early 2002 model ones. All LS engines ( 4.8-6.0) got the better rods mid year 2004.

 

We verified that with an early 2003 model LQ9 from an 03 Escalade that still had the small 10 mm head valley cover bolts on it ( although not gospel the 13 mm valley cover bolts generally indicate the floating pin rod) and it had the full floating pin rod. It was original too as the mid year shift of 2004 changed the head bolts from unequal length to equal length. This LQ9 had the old style unequal length head bolt arrangement.

 

Really guys call the rods LS2 rods which is honestly incorrect. The connecting rods existed 2 years before the LS2 even made it into production.

Eh... I rip them apart myself to make sure lol. I had read both ways on the interwebz and then it was pretty well maintained on pt.net that the LQ9 had the rods all along.

 

That 03 with the old style unequal length head bolt block verified that.

Nothing is as cheap as keeping what I have. And judging by how good this motor runs with no tick and no oil consumption it will be good for at least another 100k.

 

Fortunately one of my friends is going to build a go fast truck, so helping with that will be fun.

Is there a lot of after mkt supoport for the LQ9? Headders, rods and pistons ect? I'f I was going to do it I would want to freshen it up and add boost. This is pretty much the only forum I look at concerning trucks. I'm not well versed.

    • I have A 2020 1500 5.3 8 speed. LTZ. Transmission problems since 60,000 miles. Started when I go to store in morning to get my morning coffee before work leave truck running get back in put it in drive/ rev no movement step on gas a little slams into gear. Put in neutral step on gas little shake then put in gear and gose.  Shut truck off start .. ok now at stop light stop truck after a few seconds feel a little kick if that doesn’t happen stuck in 3/4 gear shut truck off wait few seconds and start usually ok again. If you down shift manually ok as long as you get into 1st before stop. If not it kicks . I WANT A NEW TRANSMISSION. Now I want a new truck it just hit 80,000 IDK IF ILL BUY CHEVY CAUSE THEY STILL HAVE THE PROBLEM AND REFUSE TO RECALL . Oh I’ve changed the fluid and filter 3 times now. And yes used mobile 1 not ac/delco cause it’s not meeting the requirements that mobile is did use ac/delco filter

    • I'm looking at carpal tunnel surgery on my left hand and lumbar fusion. 
    • While waiting for parts I have been working on installing the AC compressor, new accumulator, and orifice tube. Also changed out the high side ball valve (original). The orifice tube that was in there wasn't too bad. Slightly dirty, a little bit of junk, but not blocked. Glad I changed it out.   The accumulator, which should have been a 5 minute job, may have just burned $50. Put some PAG in it, wrote the date and mileage on the side, fresh o-rings and gooey'd up the threads and rings with Nylog. Got everything connected and snugged and was going to vacuum down the system, and....   My manifold gauge won't fit on the port. It's not an R12 service port. It LOOKS like an R134 service port but the diameter is a hair too large. There's a sticker on the accumulator that says it's designed to be used with R12 and R134a systems only. So it's not R1234yf. Even if I reduced the diameter slightly with a file, the shoulder on the port is too large so the quick-connect valve won't lock on. I'm stumped. It's going back, and 50/50 on if they'll give me a refund.   Also, I did a fuel pressure test.... Key on, the gauge spikes to about 60psi and quickly bleeds off, like 2psi per second. The fuel isn't going into the plenum, no smell, starts fine, so I'm guessing there's a bad check valve in the pump and the fuel is just draining back into the tank. oh, hell. But, it shouldn't be a problem, pump primes just fine and the truck starts right up. It just means I can't really ever use fuel pressure to verify a leak at the injector or intake.
    • Got this yesterday out of nowhere. Truck is a 25',6.6 gasser with 8k miles.  Only semi anomaly is that the truck had been sitting, uncranked for 6 days. Elec Stability Control showed immediately upon cranking, not while driving. No drivability issues, just the message. Battery didn't seem to be weak when cranking over.  I drove it, killed it, let it sit a few hrs with no avail.  Truck is 100% stock. No damage.
