03 Tahoe XM issues

Hey there, I have a 2003 Tahoe z71 with OEM Bose HU, Onstar and XM.

I activated XM and works great, but only when I am in a large/Major city, However, as soon as I start leaving city limits, signal is lost until getting back into the city???? For instance, i live in Tucson AZ, i travel often to Phoenix and San Diego, as soon as i start getting just out side the city limits, i lose signal, until i get to PHX or San Diego area.

I tried asking XM support, but that was a lost cause... I've asked a few Audio places and they all want to sale me a new stereo, which i know is not the issue..

I purchased the truck used in 2007 and has had this problem since purchasing, so not sure if this has been a problem since day one or not.

Does anyone else have this problem or know what i can do to fix it?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Odd. My XM worked all of I-10 from California to Florida except for the tunnel under the Mobile bay

Sounds like a antenna problem but I know antenna problems on aftermarket units happen at all different times quite random for loss of signal or complete. For you to be isolated to city limits.... Sounds weird. Keep after customer service go to a manager. Not sure what's involved in a stock antenna replacement. There must be a member here who has done this.

I wish I knew the factory system better to help you. Mine was aftermarket. Have you tested with an aftermarket system or another XM enabled vehicle to see if its your vehicle vs the area.

Since this is a satellite service, you shouldn't be having this problem. I know of no one who has ever had the problem you describe

It is your antenna, the antenna for XM has "2parts" one part is for the normal XM sattelite signal the other will pick up repeaters. Repeaters are used in larger cities to cut down on signal being blocked by large buildings, overpasses, parking structures, etc.

Thanks all for the responses... Nitro, that's what I was kinda figuring.. Are both parts contained in the same antenna or are they literally two separate components? Has anyone ever replaced an OEM antenna or is it just easier to install new antenna altogether? Side note, I still have an Analog OnStar antenna, I was told by someone that if i upgraded to the newer Digital Onstar antenna, that it contained the Xm antenna build into it??
