Question for those with the Denali gauge cluster......

 

Since ours is a digital gas gauge, are you finding the low fuel warning is coming on prematurely?

 

As shown in my post above, I averaged 20.8 MPG coming back from San Diego and the low fuel light came on when I was approximately 10 miles from my house.

 

I searched through the Denali manual, but didn't see anything stating how much fuel is left when the low fuel warning light comes on. I heard someone mention 2 gallons, which at my MPG level, would mean I had nearly 42 miles of range left. When the light first came on, it did state a range of 56 miles, then gradually went down, until it just stated fuel range "low".

 

How it went from 42 mile range to low is beyond me. What is low supposed to mean? 5 miles? 10 miles?

 

So here I am coasting to my driveway thinking I could run out of gas at any second and long story short, I put gas the next day and it only takes 23.XX gallons

 

So that tells me I had 2 gallons and change in my tank. Here I was thinking I would run out.

 

The reason this is such a big deal to me is because I will be making this roundtrip to San Diego quite often in the near future and it is exactly 458 miles door to door for me (and I HATE HATE HATE to stop on road trips, literally will not stop if I'm by myself). Simple math tells us a 26 gallon tank @ at least 20 MPG (which I averaged to and from) should net me a range of 520 miles. Yet as shown above, my trip meter read 465 miles on the return trip with the low fuel level warning triggering and the range stating just "LOW".

 

So am I to believe I still had a range of 55 miles even when the fuel range stated low? Based on the exact math, that's what the range should have been.

I beleive you have 3Gal left when the Low light comes on. Think it starts somewhere around 60ish miles and gows to Fuel Range Low at 20ish....maybe your getting too good of mileage and the truck in cunfused...LOL...Ive havent gotten that good of fuel economy since before i got the updates... Now I do good to Average 17MPG... and i have 3.08s...

If I could be confident I can get 500 miles out of a tank, I'd rest easier.

 

It just seems the low fuel warning light is coming on too soon.

I personally would like to know what the highway economy is like, I do about a 1000 miles a week almost all highway

I have a 2014 Silverado 1500 Z71 Crew Cab (6.5' box) 5.3 V8 with 3.08 rear end, 18" wheels. Also installed a Bak roll up tonneau cover.

 

It had 1900 miles on it when I started - I just took a MI to TX and back 3650 mile trip and averaged 19.2 mpg for those miles. Pretty much kept it right near 80 mph most of the time. I stopped off at a local gravel truck scale before the trip - full tank of gas and one passenger, the truck weighed in at 6040 lbs.

 

Awesomely smooth and quiet ride - and very easy to get 400 miles out of a full tank on the highway!

I just took a 2,600 mile trip from Houston to Seattle towing a 6,500 lb travel trailer. My 6.2 / Max Tow silverado averaged 11.2 mpg @ 60 mph. I'll post the return leg later.

Damn, I've never towed before, but man is that a low MPG number. That trip had to cost around $800 in fuel

Well it's designed as an idiot light so people don't run the tanks dry. You can really damage a direct injection motor by running out of gas.

Seems like you should get better milage then that. I fill up with regular gas and live in the country so my city driving is very little and I am not *that* easy on the throttle. There are no hills around here either, flat like a pancake everywhere here.

Do you suspect you're truck is getting crappy mileage? Or that your instrumentation is screwed up?

 

Have you measured your mileage the old fashion way? Fill up/zero your trip meter, run to near empty, fill up, divide trip meter mileage by gallons to fill up?

I haven't measured the old fashioned way yet. If the instrumentation is correct and 12.3MPG is my actual all time MPG, then the truck is getting crappy mileage. My 2007 would do better than that in 4WD after a snowstorm...

I have averaged 19.5 for the first 2 tanks on mine under normal rural driving.

It's not really that flat in my area.

Not sure if I just got a good batch of gas or what but I just got my best "normal week" tanks to date.

405 miles

21.23 gallons

19.08 MPG.....man I love this motor!

    • No such thing as regenerative braking on a pure ICE vehicle.     Regenerative braking is the re-capture of energy from electric motors and stores it in the battery pack.  So hybrids, PHEV and EVs have regenerative braking.     What you are seeing is the charging system changing modes is all.  Its likely entering charge mode for some sort of reason is all.  All of the charging modes will be listed below.   As for L10 vs D.  L10 turns off automatic grade braking.  L10 puts you in control of grade downshifts where in D it will automatically do it based on brake pedal position and other factors.  Otherwise L10 and D drive exactly the same aside from that one aspect.    Battery Sulfation Mode The BCM will enter this mode when the interpreted Generator output voltage is less than 13.2 V for 45 minutes. When this condition exists the BCM will enter Charge Mode for 2–3 minutes. The BCM will then determine which mode to enter depending on voltage requirements.   Charge Mode The BCM will enter Charge Mode when ever one of the following conditions are met:   Windshield wipers are ON for more than 3 s. Climate Control Voltage Boost Mode Request is true, as sensed by the HVAC control module via serial data. High speed cooling fan, rear defogger, and HVAC high speed blower operation can cause the BCM to enter the Charge Mode. The estimated battery temperature is less than 0°C (32°F). Battery State of Charge is less than 80%. Vehicle speed is greater than 145 km/h (90 mph) A current sensor malfunction exists. System voltage is determined to be below 12.56 V When any one of these conditions is met, the system will set targeted generator output voltage to a charging voltage between 13.9–15.5 V, depending on the battery state of charge and estimated battery temperature.   Fuel Economy Mode The BCM will enter Fuel Economy Mode when the estimated battery temperature is at least 0°C (32°F) but less than or equal to 80°C (176°F), the calculated battery current is less than 15 A and greater than −8 A, and the battery state-of-charge is greater than or equal to 80%. Its targeted generator output voltage is the open circuit voltage of the battery and can be between 12.5–13.1 V. When fuel economy mode is active, the generator is not charging, only maintaining open circuit battery voltage. The BCM will exit this mode and enter Charge Mode when any of the conditions described above are present.   Headlamp Mode The BCM will enter Headlamp Mode when ever the head lamps are ON (high or low beams). Voltage will be regulated between 13.9–14.5 V.   Start Up Mode When the engine is started the BCM sets a targeted generator output voltage of 14.5 V for 30 s.   Tow/Haul Mode (if applicable) Pressing the Tow/Haul Mode button located on the center stack, the vehicle system voltage is raised and the remote (non-vehicle) battery will be charged. Having the headlamps on will raise the system voltage and if the Tow/Haul button is applied it will not serve any purpose. The voltage is regulated between 13.9-14.5 V.      
    • Hello from Australia Just sharing that there is now a way to delete the active shutters entirely with just a plug in module. Opens up tons of room to light bars etc.
    • I have an observation and a question... 1) I watch the voltage closely because I have had to dial in the cut-in/cut-out voltages of the battery separator to my camper.  The "smart" charging drives me nuts.  Anyway, I noticed that when coasting for a while, and especially if lightly using the brakes (though not necessary), the voltage goes up from mid/high-13 volts to mid/high-14 volts.  Then it drops back down after stopping or going again.  Consistently!   The only explanation I can come up with is REGENERATIVE BRAKING!  Well, maybe that's a little bit of an exaggeration, but it's certainly free extra battery charging.   2) Driving on mountain roads I will use L and vary the max gear.  Things straighten out and I end up in L10.  Sometimes I leave it there for a while.  Is there any difference between L10 and D?   
    • Do you think this width might affect the chalk test with a higher pressure closer to 65psi? I think lowering the pressure makes sense to get the tread to lay flatter
