What is actually leather?

I guess it means the pleather they use is pretty good since I am asking. I am wondering if anyone know what is actually leather and what is pleather? Is it just the seating surface and the back of the seats that are leather? Is the steering wheel leather? I have the AT GMC and the seats have a carbon fiber side to them that must be vinyl. If you close your eyes you can hardly discern the difference between it and the, what I assume is actually leather.

 

I am assuming the following: (Agree?)

 

Up front:

The parts of the seats your body touch (bottom and back) are leather

The head rests are leather

The steering wheel is leather

 

Back:

Seems to me the whole bench and back are leather

Good question, typically it is just what your body actually touches. The arm rest isn't leather, I imagine there's minimal leather in the back seat

On the previous trucks front seats only the seating area was leather, everything else was synthetic. The rear seats were full synthetic.

I believe BMW was the first car to switch to mainstream pleather. Its very durable, easy to clean, and last a lifetime without special care. As far as what's synthetic or leather, I'm not sure.
