Mine is pretty loud and obvious that the 4wd is working when I have it engaged. Even if auto I still have the transfer case noise going on, I think it's normal. Do you have a SLT or SLE? I find when I drive my Dads SLT its much quieter than mine which is an SLE. The SLT more than likely has more sound deadening in it even though the interiors look the same.

The Dealership installed everything on my truck and I have a signed document stating that they will still stand behind factory warranty.

They are pretty awesome! I took it in because I was having some vibration issues at 70 mph(more than there should be). They replaced all 4 tires(35x12.50x20) and fixed the problem. They also gave me a 2013 Yukon Denali for a loaner. Thing only had 10 miles on it!! As a bonus they have a theatre with like a 100+" screen in the waiting room!!!!!

I've had my truck for about 6 weeks, so it has very low mileage still (about 1400 miles), but there is definitely a little extra audible noise when driving in Auto or 4Hi. It's due to the front diff being engaged. I'd say the sound is "normal", but that's me. I'm not a GM service department, but I suspect they'll tell you the same.

Do NOT use auto with this sytem. I've replaced 3 issues in transfer cases on my 2007-2013 Tahoe while using auto. My wife thinks it means exactly what it says, but it is not intended that way according to GM. I've had it at 3 dealers now and they say always use 2WD for day to day, and only auto when you will be in 4WD conditions.

 

Spent thousands so far learning the transfer case is not designed to be driven in auto all the time.

This is correct. Don't use auto unless needed. In regular dry driving situations. 2hi is fine. using auto all the time is just going to wear things out faster.

The only vehicles that are designed to remain in auto 4WD mode all the time are full time 4WD cars and trucks.

The part that isn't rated for constant duty is the ball bearings in the control actuator lever. - Its the part that actually applies the clutches in the TC. 340018d1393791517-mp3024hd-transfercase-

The balls are 13mm (0.512) in and should be made of a hardened steel. - GM went cheap on this part and they degrade. Jeeps run the same case that is constant duty with the hardened ball bearings.

Uggghhh...well mines going to the dealer tomorrow AGAIN!! This makes me sick to my stomach!

I had this as well (Stock z71 LTZ). GM sent an engineer up here to take a look as there were several from my local dealership having this issue. After the engineers report was sent to Detroit they replied with "It's due to a square chain in the transfer case (instead of rounded) creating 'noise,". And decided not to do anything about it. Good thing I have a good relationship with my dealer as they went the extra mile... had me take a fresh of the hauler z71 for a weekend to see if the problem existed on that truck as well. After driving it for the weekend and determining it did NOT have the vibration issue my dealer swapped my transfer case out for the one on the newer truck. Problem solved... but don't expect anything from GM themselves. I tried working through their customer assistance line and got nowhere. Your best bet is finding a dealer that will take the time to work with you.

So they actually changed the transfer case design part way thru production....so much for consistency.

I don't think they actually changed the design (yet, at least)... I just think there is a big enough difference for certain tolerances on the internal parts. So two trucks off the same line on the same day could have some internal parts from a supplier that are on opposite ends of the tolerances and one could exhibit the behavior and might not. Just a theory from dealership and so far I have been satisfied with the swapped TC.

Yeah, mine was so bad I could feel it in the floor boards and the steering wheel, and my passengers could feel it in their feet as well. Now it seems more like you are describing yours, "nosier" but tolerable.

    • Common failure.  You need to replace the fuel door housing.   The painted cover transfers over to the new housing.  To remove the old one there is 4 spots where you poke the plastic to release it.  
    • No such thing as regenerative braking on a pure ICE vehicle.     Regenerative braking is the re-capture of energy from electric motors and stores it in the battery pack.  So hybrids, PHEV and EVs have regenerative braking.     What you are seeing is the charging system changing modes is all.  Its likely entering charge mode for some sort of reason is all.  All of the charging modes will be listed below.   As for L10 vs D.  L10 turns off automatic grade braking.  L10 puts you in control of grade downshifts where in D it will automatically do it based on brake pedal position and other factors.  Otherwise L10 and D drive exactly the same aside from that one aspect.    Battery Sulfation Mode The BCM will enter this mode when the interpreted Generator output voltage is less than 13.2 V for 45 minutes. When this condition exists the BCM will enter Charge Mode for 2–3 minutes. The BCM will then determine which mode to enter depending on voltage requirements.   Charge Mode The BCM will enter Charge Mode when ever one of the following conditions are met:   Windshield wipers are ON for more than 3 s. Climate Control Voltage Boost Mode Request is true, as sensed by the HVAC control module via serial data. High speed cooling fan, rear defogger, and HVAC high speed blower operation can cause the BCM to enter the Charge Mode. The estimated battery temperature is less than 0°C (32°F). Battery State of Charge is less than 80%. Vehicle speed is greater than 145 km/h (90 mph) A current sensor malfunction exists. System voltage is determined to be below 12.56 V When any one of these conditions is met, the system will set targeted generator output voltage to a charging voltage between 13.9–15.5 V, depending on the battery state of charge and estimated battery temperature.   Fuel Economy Mode The BCM will enter Fuel Economy Mode when the estimated battery temperature is at least 0°C (32°F) but less than or equal to 80°C (176°F), the calculated battery current is less than 15 A and greater than −8 A, and the battery state-of-charge is greater than or equal to 80%. Its targeted generator output voltage is the open circuit voltage of the battery and can be between 12.5–13.1 V. When fuel economy mode is active, the generator is not charging, only maintaining open circuit battery voltage. The BCM will exit this mode and enter Charge Mode when any of the conditions described above are present.   Headlamp Mode The BCM will enter Headlamp Mode when ever the head lamps are ON (high or low beams). Voltage will be regulated between 13.9–14.5 V.   Start Up Mode When the engine is started the BCM sets a targeted generator output voltage of 14.5 V for 30 s.   Tow/Haul Mode (if applicable) Pressing the Tow/Haul Mode button located on the center stack, the vehicle system voltage is raised and the remote (non-vehicle) battery will be charged. Having the headlamps on will raise the system voltage and if the Tow/Haul button is applied it will not serve any purpose. The voltage is regulated between 13.9-14.5 V.      
    • Hello from Australia Just sharing that there is now a way to delete the active shutters entirely with just a plug in module. Opens up tons of room to light bars etc.
    • I have an observation and a question... 1) I watch the voltage closely because I have had to dial in the cut-in/cut-out voltages of the battery separator to my camper.  The "smart" charging drives me nuts.  Anyway, I noticed that when coasting for a while, and especially if lightly using the brakes (though not necessary), the voltage goes up from mid/high-13 volts to mid/high-14 volts.  Then it drops back down after stopping or going again.  Consistently!   The only explanation I can come up with is REGENERATIVE BRAKING!  Well, maybe that's a little bit of an exaggeration, but it's certainly free extra battery charging.   2) Driving on mountain roads I will use L and vary the max gear.  Things straighten out and I end up in L10.  Sometimes I leave it there for a while.  Is there any difference between L10 and D?
