4wd issues with 2002 Silverado 1500

This morning, I managed to slide into a ditch and worked my way out of the snow and ditch with 4H. For some reason, I could not get it to engage into 4L. After getting out, I disengaged back into 2wd and drove down the road. Once I got to 20 mph, you can start hearing gears churning louder and louder, and at about 40 mph, you can feel vibrations through the gas pedal. I could not get the truck to go past 50 mph.

In previous use, I saw this problem, but if I stopped, toggled between 4 and 2, then restarted the engine, the gear issue would go away. However, when I tried this down the road today, it would keep on churning. I rarely ever use 4wd unless there is a lot of snow on the ground.

Any ideas? My first thought was that every time i engage to 4H, it would keep the gears in place after disengaging back to 2, but I am not exactly sure.

I would scan the transfer case for codes, and see what pulls up. Maybe an actuator isn't disengaging properly. Or...maybe it's internal, which means a lot more money.

Yeah my first thought is the transfer case but i find it odd this issue goes away whenever I let the car sit for a while and restart the engine. When I left work today to go turn on the car and test drive it a little, the issue was gone. Someone mentioned to me the vacuum could be a possibility.

there is no vacuum on the 4wd system on your truck(not a car) lol

you need to see a tech and road test with him ,
