How many miles ? Any oil consumption w/ AFM in new 5.3

Is anyone seeing any oil consumption issues with the new 5.3 engine that has AFM(Not one that is disabled). I am wondering if these will start using oil like the older models did because of AFM. May be to early to tell is why I ask about the mileage.

Thanks,

11000 miles and no sign of oil consumption.

6500 miles. None.

These motors have had the oil consumption issue resolved. They do not share much in common with the older AFM motors.

Understood. But I think that some of the older engines did not start using oil till they got quite a few miles on them, So we may not know for some time. That is why I asked about miles hoping that someone has racked up a whole bunch can comment. But so far so good anyway.

I can't believe no one else has noticed a drop in their oil level between changes. I just checked mine (at just over 4000 miles) and it is almost half a quart low! WTH?!

and yes, it was setting on level ground...and had been setting overnight.

check the oil when the engine is warm.

huh?

why would you not wait until you know all the oil has drained down into the pan?

So you are saying that on a brand new truck setting on the lot that if you check the oil, you will find it low? because the engine is cold?

I'm sorry but I'm not tracking.

What I am saying is I checked it at about 2000 miles (same conditions) and it was full. Now if the "hashed" section of the dipstick is representative of one quart of oil, my truck is now about 3/8 quart low at 4000 miles.

I understand (while not agreeing with the idea of it) that with higher mileage, the likelihood of oil usage on new engines is there. My wife's equinox didn't use a drop of oil until about the 30k mile mark. Now it uses about a quart between changes. And it obviously doesn't have AFM...its a 4 banger.

What worries me, is that if my truck is using oil at 4000 miles, how much is it going to be using at 30k, 60k +?!?

What (if anything) can I do about it now? what would you guys do if your brand new truck was using oil before the first oil change?

There could be other scenarios causing your slight consumption and the biggest could be that maybe your rings are taking a little longer to seat during break in. Just keep an eye on it and log everything you find. I know that the dealer is going to just blow it off but if you feel like it is using more than it should, make a formal service ticket on it just so that you have record of when it started and that you seem concerned. Never hurts to have to much information to back you up in case it gets worse later on. Fortunately you have a 100k warranty to address any excessive consumption, should it come to that.

I personally wouldn't sweat a damn thing unless I had 95k miles on it and it started using oil, that's when I panic.

GM was proactive this time around. They used a much larger oil pan. This will greatly reduce the need to add extra oil in between oil changes as oil gets used.

:bs:

They were proactive by completely re-designing the entire PCV system that reduces the amount of oil that gets through to about 1/3 that of the old design. A larger oil capacity is a good thing in every way having nothing to do with AFM.
