Official Press Release

DETROIT – General Motors has shipped thousands of kits consisting of ignition switches, ignition cylinders and key sets for older model small cars subject to a safety recall.

Letters were mailed last week to about 1.4 million owners of 2003-2007 models telling them to contact a GM dealer to make an appointment for repairs, which should take about 90 minutes. Wait times may be longer depending on the busyness of a particular dealership.

Owners of 2008-2011 models subject to the recall will receive a letter in early May confirming their inclusion in the recall. Another letter alerting them when parts are available will follow.

GM’s 4,300 dealer service departments are replacing ignition switches that may fail to meet GM’s torque specification. The ignition switch may unintentionally move from the “run” position to the “accessory” or “off” position with a corresponding reduction or loss of power. Dealers also are replacing ignition cylinders that can allow removal of the ignition key while the engine is running, leading to a possible rollaway, crash and occupant or pedestrian injuries.

The vehicles covered are model years:

  • 2003-2007 Saturn Ion
  • 2005-2010 Chevrolet Cobalt
  • 2006-2010 Pontiac Solstice
  • 2007-2010 Pontiac G5
  • 2007-2010 Saturn Sky
  • 2006-2011 Chevrolet HHR

Until recall repairs are made, it is very important that customers remove all items from their key rings, leaving only the vehicle key. If there is a key fob, it also should be removed from the key ring. Owners of manual transmission vehicles should be sure the ignition is in the “Off” position and set to reverse gear with the parking brake set before removing the key. Owners of vehicles with automatic transmission should be sure the vehicle is in “Park” before removing the key.

I have a friend who has the Ion and is worried about the switch. She'll be happy when I tell her she should be getting a letter soon.

Well there has been a press release saying the single ignition key with out the fob or anything else is safe

Maybe so,but who carries a key in their pocket or purse by itself? I'll bet 99% of all vehicle owners have a key ring with other keys & maybe a fob.A single key is way to easy to lose.Does GM still intend to remedy this problem?

Yes, they'll be installing new ignition switches. I agree that a lone key is easy to misplace to if it weren't I'd use one of those quick disconnect key rings.

My key ring has a fob, truck key, house key And flash drive

Do you have one of the recalled vehicles?

Nope. The g6 isnt covered. Making a point that a ton of keys isnt necessary. A friend does however, he just has the fob and key on a separate ring.

Mines gotten a tad bulkier but it isn't horrible. Truck key, fob, apartment key, mailbox key, Streamlight Nano flashlight and a little piston I've had since I was like 16.

When I moved I downsized my keys to just 2 keys, fob, and flash drive.

We just got notice that my wife's '07 Buick Lucerne is involved in the ignition switch recall. GM#14299 NHTSA ID#14V355. They want us to remove everything from the key including the fob. The notice also said parts were not available but that when they are "your GM dealer will install two 13mm key rings and key insert into all ignition keys."

So it sounds to me like instead of ignition switch replacement the fix here is to make the key rings so small that you can't add anything to them.

Not quite what I was expecting...

I thought you guys might get a kick out of this.

My wife's car got in on the GM ignition recall. This is the extent of the recall repair for her car. 2ea 19mm rings for each key/fob and an insert stuck in the slot on the key. Here's the new "safe" Buick key next to my truck key.
