Oil change question?

What would you do? I am taking a trip in about 10 days. My new truck has about 1500 miles on it and sitting at 82% of oil life remaining. I am guessing by the time I leave I will have around 1800 miles on the odometer. The trip will be around 2000 miles round trip.

Should I go ahead and have the oil changed before I leave or wait till I get back?

I am old school and have always heard to have the first oil changed in a new motor after the first 1000 miles, I know now that is different and the dealer says just wait till the oil life is down close to zero.

Just want others opinion, I am thinking of having it changed right before I leave.

Can't give expert opinion but....

 

Personal opinion, take the trip and enjoy! Once the OLM says it's getting low on percentage then get it changed. I personally have never changed the oil in the first hundred"ish" miles. Some people said they were glad they did, others said it looked brand new. I personally figure unless the book says I have too, then I don't and if something does happen, that's what the warranty is for.

On my 2007 Silverado, which took 5W-30, I changed my oil for the first time at 3,000 miles. I never had an issue with that truck other than the oil consumption problem that all of the trucks had because of the active fuel management and that hit at around 95,000 miles. In fact, I don't think I've ever changed the oil on any new vehicle until either 3,000 or 5,000 miles depending on the oil used. In this case it's a synthetic blend. I have 2800 miles on my truck and I don't plan to change the oil until I hit 5,000 miles. I keep an eye on the color of the oil on the dipstick but I don't think you need to worry and change the oil this early. I think that's being overly anal in my opinion and is more a waste of your money than anything. If it needed to be changed sooner, they would tell you to change it sooner. You think the dealer doesn't want to make $50 NOW on an oil change in the hopes that your engine might break 7 years later because you didn't change the oil at 1000 miles and hope they get the chance to fix it and make money THEN? No they'd rather have the $50 now yet they don't even tell you to bring it in until 5,000 miles. 2 different dealers told me that. I really wouldn't worry, but that's me.

I would drive it and then drive it more when you get back. I bet the OLM will put you over 5000 miles before it is ready for an oil change. I have went 5000 miles on all of my cars since my 2001 Firebird Formula and never had a issue.

Thanks for the quick reply's! Going to head up to South Dakota to celebrate grandson's 2nd birthday! I have been all over the US being a military brat and doing a lot of traveling myself since then. However this is one part of the country I have not been too, so going to see the touristy stuff around Rapid City. Going to be a good trip for the wife and I in our new truck!

I would change it but I changed all my new vehicles oil between 500 and 1000 and after seeing the oil I have peace of mind I did the right thing.

Do what feels best to you. Im in the equipment sale and service industry, being that most are giving four free oil changes these days, if it need earlier first oil changes they would require it. Im on the extended drain side myself and deal with many types of engines and oils, I never experience engine failings do to extended drains yet.

I would change it to... Doing mine tonight with Mobile 1 and putting a Magnetic drain plug in . I'm wondering if you need to use new crush washers. I'm almost at 1000 miles. OP have a great trip!!

Since your asking it's obvious your looking for some peace of mind so you might go ahead with doing so. I just did my oil change at 1,045 miles. It's just for my piece of mind knowing I feel like a good break in oil change is still necessary from a new engine. I will say it was fairly brown but not bad at this mileage.

I say change it. Oil is an infinite resource in which the world has plenty of. Don't let that manufacturer's statement in the owner's manual fool you about going 7,500 miles before oil changes. I would do it every 500 miles.

_{You can figure dropping 1% on the OLM for every 75 miles you put on the vehicle for average driving. I'm sure it might be different on all highway, or mostly stop and go driving. The dealership said I could go by the OLM, but I changed it at half (3750 miles) the recommended (7500 miles) intervals both times. It was at 51% with something like 3735 miles the fist time, and I think 50% at 7512 miles. I'm old school to, and this is the first oil change I let go over 3000 miles in any vehicle I have ever owned. The 8.5 quart oil capacity, was the only reason I let it go to 3750.}

Can't understand why the dealers are dragging their feet, since GM is footing the bill, and it should mean more money in their pockets? Most dealers will not change the oil under warranty unless its 20% or less on the OLM. The book says 7500miles for an oil change. break in might suggest an oil change at 1500miles or so if you so choose. But engines and oils no longer require oil changes at 3k, more like 5-7k. Just due to the fact that engines alone now have 2-3 extra qts means you dont need to do as often. Unless you operate in extreme conditions changing your oil at anything less than 5k miles is an outdated practice and offers little evidence in doing so beyond personal anecdotal opinion.
