LED light mounting

I bought a long piece of steel at Tractor Supply for around $5, measured & centered it, drilled 4 holes & mounted the light. 2 nut/bolts were used to mount the steel to the radiator supports and then 2 used for the light bar mounts on the steel.

Here is where I installed the switch. Out of the way where it won't be accidentally activated and not easy to see unless you know where it is.

 

That switch location is going to get really old really fast. I already think I have to reach too far and it's on the side of the steering column.

I don't have T-Rex arms and bending over isn't a big deal to reach the switch..lol It's not something I will use often so out of the way is what I was looking for. It's also not easy to see if you don't know it's there.

Barely any if at all. The leds line up with the openings in the grille.

Sweet. I am looking to install a light bar and really don't want to put it up on the roof above the windshield. I was looking at behind the grill. But I was concerned with light output being blocked by the grill. The other option was trying to fab something up where it is just above the front plate cover in that area. I like the clean install behind the grill. Kind of stealth that way.

Hey all, to the guys that mounted the light bar behind the grill, what was your install time like? I've got a 20" rigid radiance light bar coming and just wonder what I'm looking at for time? Thanks guys.

probably took about 30 mins to tape surrounding areas with painters tape, take off the fender parts and grille and mount the light. Took me another 30 mins or so to route the wiring around the engine bay, and then the biggest pain in the a$$ was wiring into my switch into the dash panel since I wanted it to look good (that was more like 30 mins just for that). So, about 90 mins or so at a careful pace....

So here is my question. I have read through SEVERAL forums and looked through SEVERAL images. I have a 2015 Silverado 1500. On the front between the recovery hooks (where most people have the license plate bracket) there is a spot the is approx 1 3/8" high and approx 26" long of plastic. My idea is cutting this plastic and flush mounting a bar. I am more interested in lighting up DARK country roads UNDER the snow that tends to fall here in Ohio. Has anyone else had this idea? I have found a few single row bars that are 1.5" high but I have no clue how hot these things get. Would I have an issue with melting plastic if I was to do the custom install to this location??

Also if anyone needs a wiring harness with wireless remote so you dont have to cut up your interior to mount a switch they are here for $20. Works great took about 5 min to wire up.

I'm debating doing a 30" light bar behind my all terrain grill but I don't like being able to see the light bar back there. So if I go this route I will use a little trick I've learned from some local law enforcement agencies. You can take panty hose and run it over the light bar and then mount the bar. It makes the light bar much harder to see and still allows the light through. Not sure how much it would affect the light output.

Also I've seen comments about the Home Link button. How/What do you use to program the button as an aux switch??

Thus far all the info on this forum has been outstanding. All of my questions have been answered except for a few.

 

Proper depth of light bar: What size bar will fit in the bottom grill opening of my 2016 Sierra? It seems there isn't a whole lot of depth room in there if I mount it to the radiator brackets like everyone else. Will I have to cut the back side of the grill?

What length will work? And curved or straight?
