Who would get the V6 instead of the V8 if the MPG were better?

I could not live with a V6, even a Turbo V6.

i simple don't know how to live with small engines and forget about HP.

Its VERY difficult.

Even though my 2014 4.3l V6 outperforms the 2014/2015 5.3l Silverados with the standard issue 3.08 gears, and performs about the same as my 2010 5.3l, at night I can hear it calling from the garage:

"Veeeeeeeeeeeeee6! Veeeeeeeeeeee6!" And then it snickers!

It's very troubling.

It's even worse with those EcoBoosts!

They may totally outperform 5l V8s, but they aren't fooling anyone.

More seriously:

If Chevy makes a 4 cylinder engine that makes 300hp/300lbs torque I'll consider it because that's what I'm used to from them for the last 30 years for power.

If they make a V12 with 250hp/250lbs torque, I won't buy because it's less than I'm used to.

Buy for performance I need, not sound or tradition. Would love to see a 4.3 turbo from the General, would likely be their most powerful 1500 series engine. Don't need that much power myself, but it would be cool.

That's pretty good, took me some time catch my breath.

How it works:

Is this the future? GM is more a follower than a leader like the aluminum body in GM future.

Source: Ford to discontinue V8 motors in Mustang, F-150 after 2017, will run 4-Cylinder and V6 EcoBoost exclusively. As anti-progressive as we might sound – we just can’t get on board with the thought of the V8 going extinct. This feels like the nightmare we were always afraid of having, and we can’t wake up.

not sure how credible this source is, but while the epa/café standards are strict I don't think ford nor Gm or Dodge will completely get rid of the v8. that is almost impossible. if GM made an "ecoboost" type motor and it outperformed the 5.3 I would buy it. I used to be one of those "trucks have to have v8's" kinda guy but now I just want a nice truck that performs the best or better than most (preferably GM). the source that posted this article just by appearance seems about as credible as yahoo news.

as for the tile of this thread, I don't care how much better MPG's the v6 gets I would not buy a v6, just wont happen. it's not in my blood. I honestly don't see why you would get a truck with the base v6 especially with the v6 compared to the 5.3, it is not that much more money for the 5.3 and you get much better hp / tq numbers (not trying to hurt anyones feelings) . that is just my opinion.

Ive been around awhile,( almost 60 ) been lucky enough to have had some of the muscle cars of the past as well as the present. I had the same position about v8 vs v6 you have till just the last a few years. They now have full sized v6 rear drive cars that run 13 sec. 1/4 mile and get almost 30 miles a gallon. They don't sound to bad either. My wife drives one, the 10K more they wanted for the V8 version to gain a 1/2 of second in the 1/4 mile wasn't worth it to me. V6s are doing better today performance wise than V8s were just a few years ago. I do agree though in our trucks the money savings between the two isn't enough to go with the V6 even though its a great engine.

while I agree with some of what you said I just have to know what kind of car your wife has that to get the v8 it was 10K option. it def was not an American car unless you are talking about going from a Cadillac cts to a Cadillac cts-v which is not a good comparison. I can only assume that your wife is driving a german car maybe. if getting a v8 is a 10k option I would have to think twice about it before I bought it. lol

My GMC dealer is a Hyundai dealer too, I know what you thinking I though that way too. My wife bought the first one in 05, then we bought the Geneses sedan, I was so impressed I bought the coup, drove it one year traded for the GMC. The coup was a blast but I rather drive a truck. My wife loves that car, she could have her pick of just a bout anything.

Most of us old "boomers" want a V8. The "Gen X" are going to be split. The "millennials" are probably more likely to go with whichever engine meets their needs regardless of number of cylinders.

I like the sensation of speed, I don't care if its a V8 or a V6. Hell my wifes toy is an Acura Intagra type R, its fast as hell and its a 4 cylinder. When she bought that in 2001 I laugh so hard I lost my breath, till it went around my 94 Impala SS.

Ding Ding. its going to come down to like you said what gives me the most power at the best price and is the most efficent to run. I love the V8, but you couldnt sell me a 10 liter V8 that gets 300hp and 10mpg no way, problem is there still a descent crowd out there that will. S

Some of us old "boomers" have forgotten what that "manly V8 performance" we grew up on was really like.

Here's a Dodge Charger RT with the 440 big block, a "manly car for manly men". Made it 0-60 in 6.1 seconds and got 11mpg on the highway. The new Challenger V6 is within two tenths of a second and gets 30mpg on the highway...and handles better....is more comfortable...

In this thread someone told me "Thank god I had the 1995 Silverado V8 to pull the schoolteacher from the ditch!".

Well, those 1995 5.7l V8s had at most 30hp less, and 25 ft lbs more torque than the 4.3 V6.

Basically anyone saying "they could never live with the new 4.3l V8" must have had a 6.2l any year prior to 2014.

Because every 4.8l, 5.3l, and 5.7l Chevy made over the last 45 years had at best 10% more hp and torque- and 90% of them had the same or less.

As far as the new much more powerful 5.3 goes, who cares? I'm over 50 years old. I care more about my insurance bill and being able to rent a car at an airport because I have a decent driving record than racing between stoplights. I'm pretty much ok with a truck that is around the same speed as my 2010 5.3l was. :D

Actually it was a 98 which was a different 5.7 than the 95. It also wasn't a schoolteacher so where did you get that from? Well it's not just about engine specs, the 98 had 3.73 gears and my current truck only has 3.08 and actually the 98 could tow about 1,000 more lbs because of the 3.08 gears (I do plan on changing them to 3.73s). I also said that a smaller truck tried to get it out and it didn't budge it. It's hard to compare engines from 50 years ago because of how much tech changes. I've just always had V8s and it's what I like. If anything nothing sounds the same as a V8 and I always have a loud truck. There's been plenty of times with my old 98 that the V8 and 4x4 came in handy and I honestly don't think a V6 in the same truck could have done the same because sometimes you need brute force.
