Max tailer package ride

I currently own a 2009 GMC 1500 4x4 Crew Cab and a 2008 Silverado 4x4 2500HD Duramax with an extended cab. My wife is fine with the ride of the 1500 but really dislikes the 2500HD. I just put a deposit down on a new 2015 GMC 1500 4x4 SLT with the max tow package and 6.2L. that is scheduled for the third week of March. My question is this: How will my new order ride as compared to my other two trucks when unloaded? To date, I have not test driven a new 14 or 15 GM truck in any configuration. Both of my existing trucks will be sold before my new truck arrives. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I don't have a max trailer package on my 1500 but, it rides smoother than anything else I've owned or driven with the exception of my dads crown vic with air ride or town cars I've rented.

Thanks for the feedback. I have read the max towing package has heavier leaf springs, ect..... I consider it a heavy half ton........but curious how the ride would be on it compared to our 2500HD. I can't hardly get my wife to ride in it.

Mine not NHT, but I came from an 11 dmax 2500.

This thing is rides MUCH better than the 2500.

Not really an answer to your question but I was looking for a new truck I test drove some 2500 duramax and the ride was just to much. I didn't like the way it drove/rode at all. I decided on a 1500 Denali, they wanted the same price for a used duramax. I would rather have the new 15 Sierra Denali.

I'm sure any 1500 truck would ride considerably better than a 2500

I am hopeful it will ride about as good with the max trailer package as they do without them. My wife hates the 2500 HD as much as I like it!

Honestly...drove a 3.42 before my max tow...didn't notice a difference in ride quality. very floaty.

I have a 2014 Silverado Crew Cab Short Box with the Max Trailering Package. I have had nothing but compliments about the smooth ride from any friends or family that have gone for a ride with me. Yes, the max tow package has heavier leaf springs in the back but the only time I have noticed an impact with them was when I hooked up my 8,000 lb trailer. The back end of the truck only dropped 2 inches and rides quite nicely with the trailer attached.

Bert,

Thanks for the reply. That puts any concerns I had regarding the ride to rest.

I have a short bed regular cab with the full towing. Even in the short configuration

it is the softest riding truck I have ever driven.

Most cars ride stiffer then these trucks.

I have a '14 2500HD, rides like crap, drove a '14 max tow and it rode like all the other half tons, very smooth and soft.

The 6.2 is a powerhouse, you will not believe the power even coming from a diesel.

The new half ton will not brake or handle a heavy trailer like your 3/4ton does, there is not getting around that.

Thanks for taking time to post. Those of you that have responded has made me feel better about my decision to go with the max trailer package. It sounds like it should handle my 8,000 lb trailer okay and still offer a good ride when not towing.

I am in the same decision making process. This answers the question of 1500 with, or without, the Max Tow arrangement. But I am also considering the Denali 2015 with Magnetic ride. It seems almost impossible to find a dealer that has both versions in stock in order to drive back to back.

So for anyone that has been there ..... Is there THAT MUCH difference in the ride quality - smoothness with the Mag ride of the Denali? Is the ANY difference? I would be towing a GVWR of 8000, when I tow, so I am confident of the weight capabilities of either ... but if the ride isn't different I would prefer to have the added beef of the Max Tow. Than again .... this would also be my everyday ride, so if there is a significant difference I would opt for the Denali.

Any experienced opinions would be a help

I have max tow and don't notice any difference from anything else it rides nice. I know max tow has 3.73 gearing and oil cooler goodies. Not sure how or if the suspension is any different.

I think the max GVWR is 7600 and that's with the NHT. Are you talking about the gross weight of the trailer? I haven't taken a ride in a 1500 with mag ride. But I would suspect that all of the float would be gone and you probably wouldn't porpoise. Here's a quote from GM regarding mag ride on the sierra denali: “The responsiveness of the system makes this full-size truck feel and drive like a luxury vehicle – and one that’s more comfortable on long trips, especially when trailering.” If it behaves like the last generation denali with the auto-ride suspension I would suspect that when you push tow-haul it would tighten up your suspension as well as activate all the normal powertrain enhancements.

    • Hey everyone, I recently had an issue with my 07 2500HD GMT900. My DRL’s stay on at all times. Right front turn and right mirror turn signal indicator stay on solid at all times. By “at all times” I mean the only way to make them go off is disconnecting the battery. I tore the headlight assemblies out, tried disconnecting the harnesses to eliminate bad wiring at the harness, I unplugged the headlight switch, no change and the mirror turn signal still stayed on. My first thoughts were : Bad bulb and/or socket somewhere, under hood fuse panel bad, bcm bad, tail light or trailer wiring problem, or some random short to power in the harness.  Possibly a bad ground but unlikely. I had a big clue in the fuse panel, it had a burnt smell. I started pulling every fuse that had to do with DRL or right turn/park lamp. Nothing made the right directional turn off but pulling the DRL2 fuse made the DRL’s go out.  After studying wiring diagrams, I found that both problems had that fuse panel in common, the bcm also controls both problems but knowing the fuse panel had a burnt smell I removed and disassembled the fuse panel and found a little corrosion on the printed circuit board.  I ordered a new fuse panel from Amazon for like $260. When it arrived I installed it, and put everything back together, the problem was fixed. I figured the fuse panel needed to be replaced anyway so that was a logical place to start. Hopefully this story helps someone in the future. Regretfully I didn’t scan for codes before I did everything.
    • That stinks. I’m sitting on the side of the road right now with the same issue. Never had an issue before taking it in for the ground strap recall. Now I’m outside of warranty and they’ll probably want $200 just to diagnose what they already “fixed”.
    • I wonder kind of nuts and bolts they will come up with next? Jim
    • “It should be recognized, however, that there becomes a point where fuel economy oils do not make much economic sense for the end consumer—we talk about a fuel saving of ~€100 compared to a risk of €1000 Euros if the oil is too thin and causes increased engine wear rates. However, the benefit of these oils accrues to the car manufacturers. If their vehicles can save 1–2% fuel by using a special fuel economy lubricant, then that OEM can drastically reduce the amount of fines they need to pay.”   I liked this and the following paragraph as well but it’s really only touching the beginning of the benefits OEMs see from spec’ing these oils. After you factor in “out of warranty” service work and new car sales when these engines fail before their time, it’s a good racket for them. Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they're not out to get you!
