First Oil Change

I just waited until 7,500 miles with about 3% on the oil life before I did my first one. The only thing I remember the manual talking anything about break in was for the first 500 miles but doesn't say anything about break in oil. It just said to not go on long trips for the first 500 miles which I still did when I went on a 300 round trip to the beach for a day and did another 100 at the beach lol.

Just a note the Factory Oil installed on New Trucks/Cars is Highly Detergent which is a form of wax substance that keeps the dirt off the parts and in solution.

Since "WE" really do not know what particular oil is in our truck I change it ASAP. Because then I KNOW....

I did my first at 5500. Second around 11000. Im at 16000 now and will be due in another 500 miles or so. My dealer said they honor the free oil changes when the OLM is under 30%.

I've been going by the OLM in my vehicles since 1999 and haven't had any issues. Some people like to change the factory oil as soon as possible and others, like me, just wait until the OLM says change it as usual. It's all personal preference and really no right or wrong answer.

For 2014/2015 dry dump Corvette:

Some 2014/2015 Z51 and Z06 Corvettes may experience a condition that leads to oil leaking out from the air cleaner assembly. This condition may be caused by running the engine continuously at a high engine speed with the first factory fill oil, resulting in silicone sealants in the engine’s gaskets degrading the oil’s anti-foaming agents. The oil foam has no effect on the engine’s durability.

GM is changing the required maintenance schedule for all 2014/2015 Z51 and Z06 Corvettes equipped with dry sump systems. The new schedule will require the oil/filter be changed immediately after the break-in period, which occurs after the first 500 miles of operation. Once the break-in oil change is performed and the Oil Life Monitoring system is reset, customers should follow the Oil Life Monitoring system for all future oil change needs.

I did mine at 1500mi and my brother's Camaro at 1500mi. If they can reccommend it for Vette (altough as a special service requirement), then its good enough for all the engines IMO.

I did my first oil change at 2k miles and then the 2nd oil change at 6k. I always heard to do your first oil change around 2k. People will argue to do it later, but really what will it cost ya?

Unless the engine is using a break-in oil, I always change the oil on any new or rebuilt engine no later than 1k miles, especially if it doesn't have a magnetic drain plug. Whether its needed or not, I've seen certain engines make a lot of metal quickly as it wears in, and I want it out as soon as possible. Now that my Denali hit 1k miles and is in the shop...again...I told them to go ahead and change the oil since its "4 free at any time".

I've never seen any conclusive (or even persuasive) evidence that changing the oil at an interval other than what the OLM says does squat.

So, I change mine at or near the OLM limit. I did the first change on my 2014 around the 9000 mile mark and put in Mobil 1 pure synthetic of the specified viscosity. Did the same thing in the past two trucks and both are still running like tops, one in the mid 200k mile range and the other around 150k mile range. I don't much care if they last forever, but they do seem to go longer than I need them to.

There's a bunch of guys stuck on 2000, 3000, or 5000 miles for their oil changes. I'm guessing they mostly run mineral oil. If there's any conclusive evidence of anything, it's that synthetics do reduce wear, especially in cold starts where most of the wear occurs. It's 2015. Oils and engines are much better than in 1968. Of course, the single biggest improvement is electronic fuel injection, reducing oil contamination by light years.

Basically. 3000 mile gimic was is an old antiquated thought process.

About the only ones that really need a 3,000-mile oil change are the quick-lube outlets and dealership service departments. In their internal industry communications, they're frank about how oil changes bring in customers. "Many people...know when to have their oil changed but don't pay that much attention to it," said an article in the National Oil and Lube News online newsletter. "Take advantage of that by using a window sticker system [and] customers will be making their way back to you in a few short months."
