07-13 Silverados/Sierra Feel Cheap?

A couple months ago I rented a 2015 Silverado LT for three days when my 2006 Sierra SLT was in the shop. Not a bad truck, but not what I would spend money on. I could not wait to get my SLT back. As things wear out, I guess I'll just keep rebuilding it.

The dash in my 2011 reminds me of the 73-87 GM, I actually like it. I also love how you sit higher in the interior, and the dash is not as high up in the 2007-2013. When they first came out, I loved my 04 better. But now, I like these better.

 

I went from an SLT to an SL, happy with no regrets.

I am the same, When they first came out I hated the way they look but now I like the way they look better than the 03 - 06. But I will never own one most likely just because of the amount of money that I have put into my 99 and my 03....I will run them into the junkyard.

I never buy first two or so years for that reason. My 04 was super reliable, but it was time for an update. Will drive this a few years, then Get a 2014+.

Both my 2008 and 2010 Silverado are holding up fine. No rattles or any type of issues with the interior. They have both been great since driving them off the dealership lot.

 

If you think they are cheaply made, don't buy one. Get yourself a nicely equipped 2015 LT model for around $50,000.

Ive only sat in gmt900's a few times but I agree on the cheap feeling. The cloth and doors are inferior to the gmt800's, especially to the well developed '06. And the bodywork including headlights aren't as good either. They were a huge let down imo.

I agree, the GMT900s are not all that, they're kinda of a spin off of the 800s but with slightly better features such as AFM. That's why I prefer the GMT800s over the 900.

Is the AFM that great of feature? I have read quite a few threads talking about people turning it off because they hated the lack of power at highway speeds. I've also seen people talking about the AFM engines burning oil after 50-75,000 miles.

I believe it has a lot to do in the exact model you own. I drive 2 different ones. My daily driver is an 08 Sierra Denali. It now has 105k on it and I love it. I owned several 00 models, from an 00 SLT to an 03 Sierra Denali, to an 04 SLE. This is the nicest so far. The only problem with it has been the door lock deal. At work I occasionally use an 08 2500 HD Silverado LS with the Duramax. Great tow vehicle, but the interior does leave a lot to be desired on it. I would not be satisfied to drive it every day.

Just added another POS to the stable. An '09 Denali. Funny - everything works as it should, no cracks in the dash, tan leather seats in good shape...Who'd a thunk it? There's actually TWO gmt900 trucks out there in good shape. I guess I should go out and get a lottery ticket for being so lucky...

The AFM on my 09' seemed to work MUCH better than my 11'. Pretty much same truck, rear end ratio the only (and a big one I admit) difference. The 13' doesn't have AFM.

 

So far only had to have one dealer service issue, on the 11' for hard starting. They replaced a "fuel module" that supposedly had a recall that no one could produce.

 

Three trucks. Happy with them. Never would have gotten rid of the 09' or 11' but the dealership offered me such a deal I was afraid to leave finger prints behind and felt I should have been wearing a mask. They went nuts over the heated seat kit I put in the 09' with the cloth seats! Go figure.

 

All that said, I miss my 99'. It was my own stupidity that did that truck in. Drove for an hour behind what appeared to me at the time an oil spraying truck on the interstate. Only 3 months later when the truck went from nearly no rust (just surface rust on a few frame members, fasteners, and oddly enough the power steering pump to rust through in a dozen or more places did it dawn on me that "tar truck" was spraying brine or something. Even though I washed the truck top to bottom and underside after the spraying episode, she still rusted away. That 4.8L equipped truck got 18 MPG. In the city. In the country. With the air on. With the air off. Loaded or unloaded. Only when you put it in 4WD did that change, then I think you could see the gas gauge move, lol. Never tried towing the tractor with it though, tractor weighs too much.

 

While we are at it, my 94' Sonoma beat the heck out all 4 of them, fit and finish wise. I assume completely different manufacturing crews have something to do with it.

Gee, we must of gotten lucky! My GMT900 Denali has worked 100 percent flawless too! Nice looking truck by the way!

I haven't had any problems with my 13 LTZ interior either which I don't put many miles on it either, I average less than 12,000 a year.

Cheap? Just wait until your dash starts cracking at the passenger side airbag...and GM pretty much tells you to pound sand. They claim there's not a problem with the dashes cracking, then they'll blame it on the heat, cleaning products, etc. My whole interior rattles like crazy...the panel at the driver's knees rattles and doesn't align with the adjoining panel correctly. The upper storage compartment on the passenger side also does not align properly and has about 3/16" or so overhang. Just recently, my back seat started rattling and making loud noises. I found the problem a week or so back...

 

 

 

Dealer warrantied The dash in my wife's 2010 Tahoe but I agree these body styles do feel really cheap. It really became noticeable to me after I bought my 14 Silverado and now switching between my truck and her Tahoe. I've gotten to where I don't even like driving her Tahoe anymore.

Took mine to the dealer...dealer contacted GM to see what they would do (I was about 1000 miles out of warranty). GM offered to pay $200 and me pay the other $300, and the new dash wouldn't be warrantied (why would I want the same dash that will crack less than 3 years later). Even after the dealer told them how much money my family had spent on GMC Sierras, at the same dealer, over 3 years (I bought my '10 Sierra in May 2010, my dad bought a 3500 HD in 2011 and a Yukon in 09, father inlaw bought a Suburban in 09 and a 2500 HD in 2012), GM wouldn't put more than $200 toward a new dash. I'll live with it like it is (I plan to see if I can fix it myself), and let my $$$ speak when it's time to get my wife a new vehicle.

The dash cracking must just be a southern truck issue, pretty uncommon up here. Mind you, our two hottest months are July and August.

I've owned a 2014 gmc denali, a 2012 gmc denali, a 2007 tahoe ltz, and a 2001 tahoe lt.

 

the 2001 tahoe has the best quality parts, the 2014 has the quietest ride and the crappiest quality/interior/features. the 2007 is a mix of the two, so its gonna stay.

    • Yep, just a quick reference point.    My main point being I’d do a thousand other things before I’d pay 10k for a transmission.    Speaking in ignorance cause I don’t look at these trucks, what is it worth? 20k?
    • I think users are going to want to pick their monitored parameters, which parameters they want to see first.    It should probably start with baseline at a minimum and adjust to learned, but be able to overlay baseline for comparison.   A simple severity level would be able to determine what type of alerting is appropriate or user selectable.    Why not use the OBD port though?   I think a phone connection would be a good idea, push notifications type deal.   Number 1 issue is having data is useless if you don’t know what the data should be under normal conditions. 
    • I thought I would use your thread and add to it as I just did my first longer drive with my truck in the last couple of days. I drove from the Grande Prairie area of Alberta down to Edmonton and most of where I drove in the city was the ring road so fairly free flowing but a bit of stop and go as well in the city. Stayed the night and returned home and not too many stops along the way each way but every restart and certainly every cold start sets it back for fuel mileage. Why I say that is I see some people will cherry pick a fuel mileage leg after the vehicle had been warmed up driveline wise before hand and its a forgiving ( easy rolling drive leg for example ) and call that their fuel mileage which can give a false perception of reality. I was not heavily loaded at all but never the less the flip bak cover, rubber bed mat, various tools etc and extra jerry cans of fuel all way up to a few hundred pounds of dead weight so its not an empty truck. The cold inflation tire pressures are set more near the freezing point so once they are warmed up driving I was showing 45 front and over 40 rear and realize high inflation pressures would help a little in fuel mileage but certainly not the ride on our crap sections of highway. The weather was good so was not raining as that can really drag mileage down, in fact I had a bit of a tail wind on average driving home. Most people on here would never have driven on that freeway to visualize it but its got a fair bit of rolling type of landscape with numerous river valleys. For the most part I had it on cruise set to 62 although kicking it off if I caught it in time before it started down shifting and self braking going down the grades. Most of the more substantial grades its shifting into 7th I believe as 8th just doesn't have it. Total distance round trip was 643 miles and my overall average and I did refuel three times in all, figured out to 17.65 miles per US gallon. My best fuel mileage section refuel within all of this figured out to 18.46 and these are all hand calculated figures. I find if anything that the trucks computer can be over optimistic, sometimes its pretty close but other times its stretching it. On paper persay in theory the truck would have just about made it on fumes for that whole drive without refueling once.    Which made me think of the topic thread of the wonder if these trucks could do 20 mpg and that is a good question, certainly would have to be on an easy going flat highway, no head wind, the right temperature, not packing around a bunch of dead weight and puttering along even slower than I was I would suspect and going steady and not stopping to smell the flowers or take a piss !. It probably is possible but not without effort to attain that with the wind resistance and weight of these trucks. Of course on my drive most people are passing me if they have the power as per loaded highway tractors, never mind a lot of speedy vehicles but the speed limit is 68 and most are at or well over that. 
    • Monday looks like a good day for the dealer to test an ac issue. Hopefully it all turns out good.
    • Paid $2.72 for E85 today.
