is it normal for these trucks to burn oil?

Depends on who you ask. If you ask GM, then yes burning 1-2 quarts of oil within 3,000 miles is completely reasonable and normal.

If you ask anyone else on earth, no it's not normal.

My 2008 sierra with 160K miles doesn't burn a drop, a friends 09 Silverado with 145K miles burnt like crazy. I hope these new ones don't get out of hand but with new DI it "could" be a norm.

My 2007 Silverado at 98k miles was burning 1.5 quarts every 3,000 miles. GM told me that was within spec. :wtf:

Couple thoughts here, #1 I don't think you're supposed to run full synthetic until break in.

#2 I think some places are shorting people, and only putting in 6qts.

Myself, I'm old school, change oil/filter every 3,000 miles. I think full synthetic is too thin, and allows blow by

Only way I've seen 0W-20 is full syn though...

Ow-20 is a synthetic blend typically at the dealer. There are full synthetic versions you can upgrade to if you wish.

I'll have to keep monitoring it. I've put probably another 125 miles on it since I've checked it. Have to check it again. May be going in to the dealer sooner than later. And no, there was no condensation under it. Just pure oil

Gasoline to.

I think you'll get a red light and warning with 6 qts.

The ring packages are going thinner and thinner and it doesn't drag as much but also flutters more. I like the 1.5 1.5 3.0 mm but now they have gone 1.2 1.2 3.0 mm and 1.0 2.0 2.5 mm and it is to thin if ask me. This creates blow by and more oil to go through the PCV (should just be called oil burn system with the 1.0mm rings). I guess if the add a camcorder vacuum pump it would be okay. Would also help performance.

If you swap between normal and synthetic you also should change weight. Thicker going from synthetic and thinner when going from by one step. Unless you are in and extreme hot or cold thin stock with the one better for your weather. So hot going synthetic stay thick and cold going to dyno oil stay thin, but most of the USA follow that rule.

I check mine about ever 1000 to 1500 and although my can catches almost 2oz in that time. No major changes on the stick.

Your dealer is wrong.

I've had my truck about 5 months. Its not using any oil. Over the years I've had a bunch of trucks. Some used oil. Some didn't. I figure if its not causing problems like fouled plugs or smoke out the tail pipe I never worried about it.

I've heard a few people with this issue, my 09 would blow smoke on start up from time to time. I've seen my new one do it twice. Had 80,000 on the 09 when I traders it. Have almost 30,000 on my 14 now. No issues other than the occasional smoke signal it sends. Normal, NO. Detrimental, not yet

Unfortunately not. I did the research. My 2007 burning 1 quart in 3,000 miles was completely in spec. GM revised the spec down after the oil consumption issue started, presumably to get out of paying for repairs. Look into it.

It may be the spec'd maximum, but it is not 'normal' for a new engine.

(they do have to have a usage amount that establishes when repairs will be done to reduce consumption, if it's still under warranty)

    • Because single shot injectors are ancient and multi hole injectors provide smoother running engines and sharper throttle response due to the fuel being atomized better..the best lead I have is a 24lb blue top injector almost everything matches up but the injector will put out about 26lb/hr which is just outside the gm threshold.figured id ask here to see if there was an absolute answer
    • Why is my question?   Any change in injectors requires a tune. Unless you are going back with the OEM part number or a newer part number of that same injector.   Any size difference or type difference like the EV6 style injectors all have different injector data for them. And there is no EV6 injector that matches the factory 25 lb/hr size that your truck comes with. I've been messing with these trucks and tuning them for a long time and what you trying to do doesn't exactly make sense to me.
    • My 6.6 gas lt8 had lifter noise with 28000 miles bought new 2026 and while driven to dealer it threw #1 rod bearing “HD my ass” good luck with yours i hope it don’t turn a rod bearing!
    • When a condition becomes a business model.    https://www.gm-trucks.com/gm-truck-suv-incentives-pricing-2026/   Zane posted this in "Latest Articles".    The honest bottom line   Truck buyers have spent three years assuming this is a temporary condition that will break once inventories normalize. GM just presented it to investors as a durable strategy, on a chart, as evidence of good management.   Inventory did normalize. GM is at 511,000 units and squarely inside its own 50 to 60 day target. The discounts still did not come back, because the low incentive number is the goal rather than a symptom of shortage.   Plan your purchase around that reality instead of waiting for it to change. Follow our ongoing GM News coverage for pricing and incentive changes as the next-generation trucks land.
    • Thought it was raining this morning when we woke. Nope. Dew point was over 80 F and humidity 98%. Zero visibility distance. Everything was 'sweating'. I've seen rain come out of clouds but never out of Pepper or the tree trunks.    Wicked storms just missed us sliding off to the east but by blocks. Heat index about 110 F with air temp in the 90's.    This is  our third wave this month of multiple days of this type of weather. And yet the grass is going dormant and the ground is cracking this side of the street and water up the the hood opposite. Just weird stuff going on.
