So i have been talking with our fleet manager for about a year to test the caprices after we switched 150 crown vics for chargers. They have been good but lack the crown vics space. So i came in Yesterday morning and there were four brand new caprices in the lot. Two of them has the 6.0 and two has the 3.6. I LOVE the cars, they feel roomy like the crown vic with the performance of the charger. The v8 felt similar to the ss i drove at the dealer, it's much quicker than my caddi. The v6 seems about as fast as the cadillac. They are great cars, not as mean looking as the charger but they ride so much better and have the room we need. If everything works out with them we will be choosing them next round as our primary squad car.

They definitely have more space than the Taurus. I'm guessing you guys were mostly crown vics?

We won a car and they decided to get a Caprice. We had it assigned to some of our accident guys, but the trunk space was an issue for their equipment. It just got switched up to a take home car for a guy.

Unfortunately, my county law enforcement has a VERY ugly Ford Habit that's been impossible to break; but our County Ambulance service has finally woken up to something other than Super Dutys (I guess the county got tired of the massive maintenance and repair bills that fords are usually saddled with) and they have bought several Silverado 2500 HD ambulances as well as a couple of Hall Chevy Express Ambulances.

The Caprices...have you found them tough to get out of in a hurry? The footwell is deep and seating position in full dress doesn't make it easy.

You need to be a midget to get into a newer ford car these days, certainly not made for people above 6' tall with their from factory slammed roof line! Hell the side windows are not even a 1' wide the roof line is so low.

The department I am working for (leaving Monday), is running a few Caprices. They ordered patrol v6s and the one Traffic car is a v8. The v8 is crazy fast vs the v6 which the guys complain about being slow.

Ya know in a really weird sorta way I've wanted one of these to pull me over so I could ask the guy how he likes it.

I don't REALLY wanna be pulled but I see the caprices all the time. From my understanding its the zeta platform from the G8, just stretched and downtrimmed a bit, with, more than likely.. an rpo code for upfitter wiring for lights and whatnot.

6.2L v8 ya? Probably performs and handles quite well for a big 4 door sedan.

I figure if I asked a cop that was pulling me over what he thought of his car.. he'd think I was being sarcastic and double ticket me or something..

Dudes around here are all caprice or charger. State patrol seems to be all charger now. Gotta admit they look good with the big black rims on em.

Oddly enough most ambulances around here are mercedes.

There easy for me to get out in a hurry and I'm 6`3. I find the v6 to be plenty fast. 301hp v6 is plenty. They do handle good. They have multiple articles of chevy bringing the caprice and a camaro ss to the track. And most of the drivers liked the caprices handling better.

10-4.

I'll be happy to get out of my crown and into a new Tahoe.

Michigan State Police has been bringing in the new Explorer. Looks so goofy in LE gear. The Tahoes and Chargers look so much better. I drive by the MSP post near me every couple weeks to see if they've gotten a new Tahoe yet. I think it'll look killer.

The new Caprice is based on the Holden Statesman from AU. When I had my 2009 G8 GXP (Holden Commodore) I love that car and still regret selling it to get the Vette to this day. They handle well and fit and finish is better than standard GM stuff.

I see a lot of our local LEO either driving the Chargers, or EB Ford Taurus or the new Tahoe. I have yet to see a new Caprice here in OK though I am sure by now someone has one.

I too miss my Stryker Blue 09.5 G8GT

(kinda drifting off topic but..) I've wanted a G8GT since they were new. I tried to buy one a while back and the dealer was out of their mind.Said I had "really bad" credit (at 720 at the time)

Guy across the street has a silver G8GT I see every day. The envy is still strong.

Didn't know the caprice and G8 were actually different cars. (commodore vs statesman.) I kinda figured they just took the zeta platform and did a customization to it..

From what I recall the G8s had huge trunks, tons of legroom and were quite big inside while still being a small car. I guess all the law gear adds a lot more than I thought it did. (When you think about it a crown vic is a pretty big car.. as is a charger..) That and maybe the statesman has different dimensions from the G8, other than wheelbase.

    • Pretty much zero rust on the truck, the frame is super clean. Non-snowy area of California for its whole life. They didn't mention JB weld specifically, just a silicone style seal.
    • Needs a manifold gauge hooked up and the pressures read.   If you don't have one, time to take it to a shop and have it diagnosed.
    • How rusty is the truck?     The transfer cases on these are an aluminum case.  If its anything like the rear diffs on the 2015-2022 Chevy Trax, those will corrode bad to the point it will push fluid through the housing via corrosion porosity or a crack from age/stress.    We have seen folks over tighten the drain and fill plugs on these transfer cases and crack them that way as well.    So I'd say its a 50/50 shot on re-sealing the case.  If all of the surfaces are good and its not badly corroded, they probably can re-seal it.  GM uses RTV to seal the case halves.   If they mention JB Weld, the issue is the case.  Be it a crack or corrosion.  JB Weld "might" hold if they clean EVERYTHING very well and drain the fluid out of the case and clean the crack and then seal it.
    • A while back, my truck (2018 GMC Sierra 1500 5.3) went in for an o2 sensor and routine service. The tech identified that my rear output seal on my transfer case was leaking, and recommended I have them replace it. At the time I didn't think anything of it, and had them do the repair. Less than a month later, I noticed that the recently repaired seal was leaking again. I called the shop that did the repair and they warrantied the repair and replaced the same seal again. A few months later, I noticed that once again the same seal leak had come back. It wasn't a great time to bring it in and I ended up just living with it for 6 months or so, noticing small (smaller than a baseball) size oil stains below the truck when it would sit for a while, as well as oil spray on the frame (to the point where it actually took the underbody coating off in that one spot). Finally got around to brining it in again, but this time I took it to a dealership service center since I am in a different part of the state for school. They identified the same output seal leaks and recommended they replace them. They also said there was no scoring on the inside of the transfer case, so it didn't need to be replaced. They chalked up the original repair failures to non oem seals and a job that wasn't done correctly. Now they called and said the seals are holding after driving/sitting for a while, but they found a very small leak in the middle, that they recommended they seal with some kind of silicone/jb weld (not sure what they are using). I haven't picked up the truck yet, but I have been reluctant about this whole repair process because I feel like they are just fixing the same thing that keeps coming back, and I am concerned there could be another root cause for the seal failing. Has anybody else experienced anything like this, or have any ideas on other things that could be the root cause?
