Sometimes you'd get a good conversation going, but the new generation of truck drivers would rather play with noise toys and be stupid than have a conversation. I passed a good many hours just having a good conversation, makes the time fly.

 

I noted the decreased use when diesel spiked in 2008...almost all trucks got governed to save fuel and there was no need to listen to the CB for bear reports since your truck wouldn't break the speed limit unless it was pushed off a cliff.

Most of the ones I heard were talking trash to each other and arguing, no real conversations that I can remember.

I've noticed that the OTR drivers are the ones who are pleasant vs the local drivers who tend to be rowdy and rude.

I tried out trucking and all I ever heard was gossip. You think a beauty parlor full of women was bad, just listen to the CB at night. I normally kept mine off. The only reason I kept one in my '98 was in case there was traffic backed up I would ask what's going on. I don't think anybody ever answered me. Also I laugh when some people are surprised that they don't use CB lingo or handles anymore.

That's how you stay awake. Cell phones and xm radio have caused a lot of them to drift away. Still when you need one they are invaluable. I may go two three days and never key the mic, but I don't want to be without one.

I love having my CB in my vehicle, wife doesn't, but I do. Think she's watched "Joyride" one too many times. Funniest part, her call-sign is "Candy Cane." The CB has kept me from being stuck in traffic jams, most recently, all the mudslides a couple years ago ("landlocked" me at home, darn the luck), and I have even helped a couple OTRs from losing their rigs/loads, reefer/brake fires.

 

Still remember the first time that I used a CB, back in the "had to have a license days." Log runner's trailer brakes were smoking something fierce, on a downhill run in NOR-CAL. My mother told my dad, his license, that I didn't use his license ID when talking to the driver, you would have thought that it was the end of the world. Believe that this was also about the time that FCC start to not care about licenses being used as call-signs.

At one point I ran an (illegal) 1×4 amp that would do about 600 clean watts. My wife would get on the radio when we were a lot younger and get the driver's all stirred up just talking (the whole "girl talking on a cb", nothing bad)...the poor soul with "speedracerchick.com" probably got a bizillion emails after that day...with that kind of power, they could never pin point where we were and some of those guys ran with us for some 300 miles up I-81 chatting...most of them thinking they were behind us (and trying to catch us), when they were actually miles ahead! Never did anything bad, but the time sure flew.

 

I have a portable "slipseat" setup for the rentals I get from time to time...still keeps me out of trouble.

      How many years have I pointed out every point in that link to the folks here and been avalanched with criticisms and outright hostilities at times? I ran counter to even the great CUSTOMBOSS and Lake Speed Jr and the half dozen experts on YouTube and in the final.....GM, Physics (Stribeck) backs that Grumpy old Bear.    Honestly, I never said a thing engineering hadn't studied silly and laid in concrete during WWII. But I'm old, the information is old and yet, the Laws of Physics are eternal.    Okay there is one exception. I vehemently disagree with their use of the word 'tolerances' when what it meant is "clearance".   The clearance is the distance between two objects. The tolerance is the degree of acceptable variation permitted in that clearance. I.E., piston to bore clearance is 0.004" with a tolerance of +/- .0002" so the clearance is in specification if it lies between 0.0038" and 0.0042". Cutting that 'tolerance in half has ZERO impact on lubrication requirements. Makes for more difficulty in manufacturing.  But a tighter clearance 'MAY'. Depends on finish. Anyway....   It's one of those statements made by people to make themselves look smarter than they are to convince people who are as un-enlighten as they seem to manipulate their behaviors. But hey, the blind leading the blind puts them both in the pit.

      Out and about yesterday on a long Saturday drive I passed a lot of Shell stations. My preferred, so I pay attention. Lot's of small town Illinois so not six stations in three blocks like the city.    Everyone of them over a radius of say 100 miles had regular at $4.19 but one which was the one closest to home at $4.15. However Premium pricing varied greatly between 85 cents over regular to $1.50 over. I'm not counting the price of the station with the lowest regular so the reference is the same for the remainder and all within the same brand. However the spread discrepancy holds across all brands.     @txab, any thoughts on that?

      What are your thoughts? The Chevy Blazer relaunch was an epic case of 'lunchbag letdown'. Jeep Wranglers and Ford Broncos stick out like a sore thumb.    The AI photos do not look like a 'retro version', but shrunken Tahoes. Get away from the 'futuristic look'. I've seen two concepts. One had rectangular headlight like a Rivian and the other way to big should include dual round headlights like the early version.   If not this would look OK   At least it has GM styling (albeit the K2XX) A lot of the images floating around look like Bronco IIs or the current Bronco. Looking at the Broncos in my area (central Ontario, it seems to be a mix of 2 doors and 4 doors, 'mall rated' to ones that could go offroad.    I'm sure a AT4 and AT4X RPOs could be outfitted similar to a Rubicon if the braintrust understood the whole offroad scene. Crosing my fingers that if it does see the light that the front air dam/bumper doesn't extend below the center line of the tire...

      And overpriced. I was in the Oshawa Truck Plant when they were being built. Very few. I could count on one hand how many I've seen since
