Train horn

Reviving this thread. I have a 2015 GMC Sierra CC. I'd like to add a bit of a pop to my truck horn. I don't necessarily find the train horn / air tank set up a desire, but some more POW would be nice. Can I get some recommendations? Links ...

Scaring the crap out of a distracted driver with an extraordinarily loud horn will put the driver into a panic mode and their first response or reaction may not be on correcting their driving! Or, if the purpose of a loud horn is to punish the other driver, this is about as effective as road rage. Driving can be very frustrating. I also drive a motorcycle and see a lot of people driving blind to their surroundings. Keep yourself safe.

Some seem to have to punish others to attempt to compensate for their own shortcomings, in 2017 this is the society we live in, might as well get used to it.

Although train horns would be great, and can be heard for miles, I would settle for a good set of freight truck horns. If I could legally have a fire engine air horn, believe me, I WOULD!!! I already have plans to put in a separate switch for the air horn, to use only when absolutely necessary. BUT, I definitely would love to have a louder horn than the one I have now.

I'd love to have one for off-road if they weren't so damn expensive. That said I'd never ever use it on road. Way too many potential issues in my mind, even outside of other people you're putting yourself in a bad spot if someone freaks out and smashes into you or something. Each their own and still think they are crazy cool.

I would really like a plug-n-play solution for Cadillac 4-note horns. I would also like if they made the parts new.

I don't have a recommendation for another horn that is a bit louder and is direct replacement, but I know PIAA, Hella, and others make some.

I believe a horn from a fire truck is legal, several of the websites that sell train horns offer them also. It is the siren and red/blue lights that are illegal

Nothing better for someone who "**** lefts" in front of you. I've had to really hot the brakes before because I took off from a light quickly but the guy who should have been waiting his turn to turn left didn't wait. Then want to act like it's my fault...I hate non-drivers.

I agree with you that this can be frustrating. I make sure that it is safe to enter the intersection prior to "take off" for the reason you describe and to make sure cars coming the other way have stopped. I understand the impulse to honk if another driver is being unsafe but I don't get how a louder horn will improve the outcome. Drivers often correct their mistakes if alerted by a car horn but I doubt much corrective behavior takes place if a horn is used as a form of punishment.

If the horn is loud enough and 'shocks' them a bit, it can create an psychological/emotional 'tag' which will stay with them for quite some time. For example, many people stop paying attention while driving and also become quite self absorbed; such as the dipshits clogging up the passing lanes while going under the speed limit.

If you give a person like this a good blast from behind them, such that it scares them pretty good, you can be certain that it will create a psychological/emotional 'tag' that will cause that person to at least become more aware of their surroundings. They may even change their habits - hopefully for the better. It will likely also upset them a bit, but that is their problem, not yours....

The bigger thing to be concerned about is the collateral damage; other people in the local area that aren't the intended recipients of a blast. Also, if a cop is nearby, it might invite a traffic stop from him/her.

Nothing like getting stuck behind a bunch of 'Tour de France' wannabees riding in a peloton, taking up the whole car lane & ignoring the bike lane. Jerks like that deserve a good train horn blast IMO.....

I'm usually a live let live person. The only place for loud horns or sirens is emergency vehicles. Someone blows one of those at me I would be glad to discuss their horn at the next parking lot. Then I would be happy to give them a ride to get their horn removed from their a$$.

We use to have those nut bags around here with those dumb ass horns till they made them illegal. There was one write up in the paper where a guy blew those horns and caused a head on collision killing 2 people in each vehicle, witness identified the vehicle with the horns and long story short the train horn blower is in prison for Vehicular homicide. Now you never hear them around here anymore I guess people grew-up and realized what problems they could cause them.

I understand the disapproval for train horns being used as normal horns. I wouldn't want that as my traffic horn. Maybe as a toy for off-road fun I would enjoy it.

I just want something a little stronger and more authoritative than stock, because generally when someone commits a serious indiscretion, I feel like this honking my horn:

Does anyone know much about our stock horns? As far as I know, it's a single unit behind the radiator on the driver's side. I wonder how many amps I can safely draw there before needing a standalone relay...

Some have one and others have two.

That said, I had one and it was aimed right into a cross member which muffled it's already pathetic tone. I simply added a second horn (PIAA I think)...cost less than $20, put it in parallel with the original, but placed it right ahead of the radiator.

Problem around here is people wear ear buds while driving and are in their own little world...you need something to wake them up.

Kinda like all those YouTube vids where a dude is almost killed on a motorcycle by some careless jerk in a vehicle, yet they proclaim "I had the right of way...".

I was selected to be a Test Team member for Kleinn Air Horns... I have the 100% bolt-on GM1500-734 kit, which comes with the 730 Demon horns. I also chose to get the upgraded solenoid kit and remote controller. The install was fairly easy, and the instructions were easy to follow. There was no cutting or drilling, and the kit came with everything you need! I personally had to make a few of my own modifications though, because of the upgraded solenoid kit. The kit provides 2 more solenoids, so you can put a solenoid on each trumpet, instead of having the lines teeing off only 1 solenoid. I absolutely love the setup that Kleinn has provided. I have an 11" lift on 37" tires, and this kit bolts up perfectly to the frame, just behind the front bumper. I have the lower section of my valence removed so you can see the bottom of the horn/air tank bracket... However, it is a solid bracket, so it actually looks like part of the truck!! It's a very clean look on the truck!!

As for the sound... These things are incredibly loud!!! MY HORNS WERE THE LOUDEST SET AT THE LAST SHOW I WENT TO!!! I have tested these up against real trains, as well as a fire truck, and I put them to shame!! The tone of these are VERY similar to a real train! I'm very happy with this Kleinn Air Horn kit!!
