Behind the Scenes at Consumer Reports Auto Testing Facility

80 Vehicles a Year

Each year Consumers Reports buys more than 80 brand-new vehicles anonymously so the manufacturers can't curry favorable reviews by delivering cream puffs. The cars are sold when testing is done. In total, Consumer Reports spends about $3 million annually on vehicles and then recoups about $2 million after selling the used cars.

Has anyone else read the Jan 2016 Consumer report on the 2015 Silverado? It wasn't the magazine edition, but more of a booklet about various items like vehicles, computers, etc.

Anyway it gives positive or semi postivie reviews on just about every item, but then give it a negative review overall. What in the world is going on at Consumer Reports? Thought that they were suppose to be unbiased. But is sure doesn't look like it when it come to the Chevy trucks.

Consumer Reports is incredibly biased. Their 'predicted reliability' is a joke and reviews are performed by individuals that have little to no experience reviewing fullsize pickup trucks. Not only that, but an issues as simple as difficulty using the touchscreen system in a vehicle is a mark against its reliability. They typically "predict" a Toyota or Honda will be reliable witth little or no justification and rarely give the same benefit of bias for any other manufacturer.

Well IMO, Consumer Reports provides valuable unbiased information. As a car nut, I subscribe to CR and three mags including Car and Driver. The advertising money can be found everywhere except CR.

CR uses their own testing data as well as subscriber surveys. There is also trade info available But not very current. I often find that CR is one of two sources for an objective review critical of a vehicle, while the auto mags gloss over issues. CR is better if you are looking for quality and reliability info. The auto mags are better at performance and handling review. That said there isn't much to go on if you are purchasing a vehicle in the first year or two of a model change.

I find the best source of timely quality reviews are on this forum or one like it for other brands. Anyone following this forum must be aware of the abnormal percentage of issues with GM trucks. The vibration thread has nearly a million views and a lot of unhappy owners posting. Ford and Dodge have similar issues. Many components are outsourced, i.e. rear end and drive lines.

That said all of this info must be tempered with our own individual evaluation and judgement. You may buy a BMW for handling and performance not reliability. You may buy a Lexus for reliability not for performance.

The vibration thread having 1 million views tells us nothing. You have to remember that each view doesn't constitute a user with vibration. I've probably viewed that thread a couple dozen times myself out of curiosity, not because I have a vibration problem. Not only that but that thread is high up on google results by simply searching "chevy truck vibration", pulling in plenty of outside viewers who may not even own a chevy truck or don't own a K2xx Silverado or Sierra.

CR has many issues with their system when it comes to their "predicted reliability" and the statistical analysis of their annual survey data.

Consumer reports has been a joke since the 1980's... the people that put much weight in them are a special kind of people to begin with... so I'll just leave it at that.

CR has always been and probably always will be very pro-import/anti-domestic when it comes to vehicles.

Their testers have no experience in automotive. The same person that tests a vehicle 1 week tests a dishwasher the next week and a TV the week after.

BINGO! The mid eighties is just about when most professional purchasing organizations quit using CR as a reliable source.

Remember when they lambasted the C5 Corvette for body rust and poorly attached body moldings? This on a fiberglass car with no moldings at all.

Where's this review? Link?

CR has no advertising so they survive on subscription revenue.

You can't read the revue unless you subscribe to the magazine.

Despite all the knocking here, they did save me from getting ripped off on a downsized box of Kraft Dinner once
