Headlight chrome trim removal?

Recommended Posts

I'm wanting to eventually color match my grill and headlight trim. I saw some photos of the trim removed, but haven't see anything about how to do it. I search and didn't come up with anything. Those of you that have done it, I would love to hear from you; about the process, difficulty, etc. Thanks!

remove headlights

those chromes trims are taped on with double side tape

use a heat gun to go around it and rip it out (carefully)

some taps break easily so be careful

Mine did not have any double sided tape. They were only held on with plastic tabs. Take your time, release all tabs, and they should come right off.

Thanks. Hoping to do this very soon.

I took a small screwdriver to help push the tabs down just enough to push and release them. Just take your time with them and they will pop off with no issues. Took about 30 min for me doing mine ( taking my time )

I pushed the clips carefully and had a screwdriver under the chrome to just keep the clips from closing up again and slowly pry them from the lens. Make sure you work from the inside of the headlight to the outside or you will break the clips for sure. I did this to install LTZ headlights that the chrome was a little scuffed and then sold my old LT headlights.

The black trim in the middle does not need to come off unless you are painting and it is just clipped on top and bottom. Be carefull on this also to not break the clips

Also be sure to get new 3M molding tape to replace the old stuff that you remove. And do remove the old 3M. It just rubs off with your thumb

What about buying cheap aftermarket lenses, think the chrome attaches the same way?

That way you can have good OE quality headlights with painted trim for far less than buying the whole light.

or.. if you have painted lights now you can swap off the chrome trim of aftermarket lights to have em match.

Just.. chewing on ideas, I suppose.

Body shop removed mine from the truck, taped off the lenses, sanded, and painted the chrome. Had them repaint the bumper while the truck was there, the black was chipped pretty bad
