Last year of NO computer GM trucks??

Wondering....what was the last year that GM manufactured trucks that are not all computerized? Or, what year did they start wih all the 'puter stuff?

 

I'm thinking of looking around for a new/older truck

1986 for all engines but the L19 7.4 big block. 1987 the lineup went ECM controlled TBI EFI on the LB4 4.3, L03 5.0 and the L05 5.7. 1987 saw the L19 7.4 big block arrive with ECM controlled TBI EFI, however the LE8 454 was still available until 1989 with carb.

Many C-10/1500's had computer controlled feedback carburetors as far back as 1982, but the 20/2500 and larger 350's and 454's didn't have computers until 1987 when they got TBI as 15HDriver pointed out. I can't say as I ever saw a 4bbl. LE8 454 in a pickup after 1986, but I did see a lot of them in motorhome and stripped chassis models even up to 1990 or so.

My `82 GMC K15 had the LE9 305 with electronic spark control. It had a knock sensor which retarded timing. Not sure if the `81s had this or not.

 

EDIT: My 305 didn't have a "feedback" carb. Mind you my '86 Monte Carlo SS does.

I thought 1980 was the last non "computer" vehicles except heavy duty vehicles. those early computer controlled vehicles didn't have much of a computer though. Just swap out a non computer carb and distributer on your "computer controlled" early 80's vehicle and your set.

I have an 87 gmc sierra classic, came stock with TBI.

1981 was the 1st year for a computer, the ESC. It can easily be by-passed.

 

Then 1987+ with TBI had the PCM.

can't speak for a newer than a 1988 1 ton (up to 90 on 1 tons)  but my 6.2 diesel has no computer and that's the way I like it

That's right, 1981 was the year GMs autos got computers.  The 1978-1980 turbocharged Buicks had a spark knock computer mounted on top of the fan shroud.

 

So the years of bliss would be up to 1980!  

 

Now, what was the last year for points distributors, before HEI?

I think it was 1973, HEI was the bomb better than changing points every 3-5K miles.

True, but we were already under the hood adjusting the carbs and valvetrain with regularity.  Kept us busy.  Imagine if we drove those cars today, we'd never have enough time for these computers!

Dual points and solid lift was fun. A blast with a good tune, mostly out of tune. My first was an RX3, two distributors 3 sets of points. At 17 I couldn’t do it, once a month to the dealer for a tune up. The worst part it was an unleaded car, before there was many unleaded stations.

Leaded fuel, another good thing taken away from us, along with lead based paint.  :-)
