Dear General Motors Customer:

As the owner of a 2014 model year Chevrolet Silverado LD or GMC Sierra LD, your satisfaction with our product is very important to us

TThis letter is intended to make you aware that some 2014 model year Chevrolet Silverado LD and GMC Sierra LD vehicles equipped with a 5.3L or 6.2L engine, may have a condition in which the cycling of the thermostat may result in stress fractures on the radiator, and may lead to coolant leaks.

Do not take your vehicle to your GM dealer as a result of this letter unless you believe that your vehicle has the condition as described above.

What We Have Done: General Motors is providing owners with additional protection for the condition described above. If this condition occurs on your 2014 model year Chevrolet Silverado LD or GMC Sierra LD within 5 years of the date your vehicle was originally placed in service or 100,000 miles (160,000 km), whichever occurs first, the condition will be repaired for you at no charge. Diagnosis or repair for conditions other than the condition described above is not covered under this special coverage program.

What You Should Do: If you believe that your vehicle has the condition described above, repairs and adjustments qualifying under this special coverage must be performed by a General Motors dealer. You may want to contact your GM dealer to find out how long they will need to have your vehicle so that you may schedule the appointment at a time that is convenient for you. This will also allow your dealer to order parts if they are not already in stock. Keep this letter with your other important glove box literature for future reference.

Reimbursement: If you have paid for repairs for the condition described in this letter, please complete the enclosed reimbursement form and present it to your dealer with all required documents. Working with your dealer will expedite your request, however, if this is not convenient, you may mail the completed reimbursement form and all required documents to Reimbursement Department, PO Box 33170, Detroit, MI 48232-5170. The completed form and required documents must be presented to your dealer or received by the Reimbursement Department by November 30, 2017, unless state law specifies a longer reimbursement period.

If you work for a dealer or GM, you really need to remove the links from your post. Does not take but a little primitive URL hacking to get to where the public was not meant to go.

I did get a letter concerning the radiator and I can't find it right now. So I did a search of recalls on "my GM" and no additional recall showed up.

Is this a recall or just an extension of warantee coverage covering this defect?

Posted

Just got the letter this past week as well... It's a TSB, not a Recall.

But, my dealer had already replaced my radiator and t-stat an oil change ago. Apparently it was known about at that time and they had found my radiator to be leaking. (I had just completed a 650 mile trip the day before and the burp bottle was empty).

Thank you for the confirmation... I have been avoiding the dealer trying to ward off the hack job, LOL.

Glad your issue was covered.

So.......I guess that's why I keep detecting the smell of coolant from behind the grill and the occasional low level in the overflow tank........marvelous.

I dropped off my truck for repair of the rusted frame and mentioned the letter regarding the thermostat.

Picking up the truck today, frame is done. They also said they pressure tested the system and no leaks, so they aren't going to do anything else. I guess I'll keep an eye on it for now. Its a lease and I still haven't made up my mind if I should buy it or move on.

just an FYI. not all 2014 trucks are included.

my 2014 gmc 1500 with 37500 miles has the smell also. Was at the dealer 1/26/17. Was told radiator is the issue. 1200.00 repair to replace radiator and thermostat, coolant ect.

long story short mine was assembled in mexico and is not included in a tsb. or special coverage for radiator leak. REALLY!!!

Yes you are reading that correctly. A new thermostat will be installed as to eliminate the cycling that is causing the problem.

Can you please explain, how a new thermostat will eliminate the cycling. Or stop the radiator from leaking in the future.

Is the new radiator to be installed an updated version or same?

Isn't that the job of a thermostat; to cycle the coolant through the radiator depending on temperature?

I guess what I'm asking is, how is the new thermostat any different?

Would a lower temp thermostat be better?

I was considering getting a lower t-stat; just always thought the truck running at 210° was high in my opinion.

I was answering his question based on the TSB. It can be found in post #17 above word for word what they are supposed to do in the situation in question. I see you have a 2015 model and the TSB above only applies to the early model 14s. Maybe there is a new one that covers older models. You would have to check with the dealer on that unless someone here knows. Apparently the opening and closing of the defective thermostats was putting pressure on the radiator and causing leaks.

I am a little confused . In TSB # 15829 It says it covers 2014 models and in the other TSB #PI1513A it says the 2014 are not covered ?

Before I traded my truck in my 2014 radiator was replaced under that TSB. my truck was built in Mexico

This is the answer I got from gmc customer service. Truly Ridiculous.

    • Because single shot injectors are ancient and multi hole injectors provide smoother running engines and sharper throttle response due to the fuel being atomized better..the best lead I have is a 24lb blue top injector almost everything matches up but the injector will put out about 26lb/hr which is just outside the gm threshold.figured id ask here to see if there was an absolute answer
    • Why is my question?   Any change in injectors requires a tune. Unless you are going back with the OEM part number or a newer part number of that same injector.   Any size difference or type difference like the EV6 style injectors all have different injector data for them. And there is no EV6 injector that matches the factory 25 lb/hr size that your truck comes with. I've been messing with these trucks and tuning them for a long time and what you trying to do doesn't exactly make sense to me.
    • My 6.6 gas lt8 had lifter noise with 28000 miles bought new 2026 and while driven to dealer it threw #1 rod bearing “HD my ass” good luck with yours i hope it don’t turn a rod bearing!
    • When a condition becomes a business model.    https://www.gm-trucks.com/gm-truck-suv-incentives-pricing-2026/   Zane posted this in "Latest Articles".    The honest bottom line   Truck buyers have spent three years assuming this is a temporary condition that will break once inventories normalize. GM just presented it to investors as a durable strategy, on a chart, as evidence of good management.   Inventory did normalize. GM is at 511,000 units and squarely inside its own 50 to 60 day target. The discounts still did not come back, because the low incentive number is the goal rather than a symptom of shortage.   Plan your purchase around that reality instead of waiting for it to change. Follow our ongoing GM News coverage for pricing and incentive changes as the next-generation trucks land.
    • Thought it was raining this morning when we woke. Nope. Dew point was over 80 F and humidity 98%. Zero visibility distance. Everything was 'sweating'. I've seen rain come out of clouds but never out of Pepper or the tree trunks.    Wicked storms just missed us sliding off to the east but by blocks. Heat index about 110 F with air temp in the 90's.    This is  our third wave this month of multiple days of this type of weather. And yet the grass is going dormant and the ground is cracking this side of the street and water up the the hood opposite. Just weird stuff going on.
