In cab drivers side rattle

I have a 2009 Silverado crewcab z71 and I have a very persistent rattle coming from the lower area of the dash. It's not the steering shaft and I've stuck foam under all the obvious plastic to metal contact areas. But no luck im trying to get some more ideas on we're to look.

There is a rattle coming from the AC vent just to the right of the steering wheel in my truck (2010 Sierra). It only rattles when the vent is in the fully open position...if I open it to the point just before the fully open detent catches, it doesn't rattle one bit.

Steel portion of knee bolster let go from plastic. Remove knee bolster, you'll find it rattle in your hands.

I believe I have this as well. I was reaching up in there trying to locate the source but no luck. Sounds like someone dropped something down inside the dash ductwork. Been there since new off and on. Does it all the time now when it's in drive but not moving. Goes away as soon as I step on the gas.

OR its the lower steering shaft. The one that attached to steering gear covered with rubber boot. Pinch boot and you will feel the rattle in your hand. Have someone rock steering wheel while holding and you will feel it. Even though it's at the very end, it will resonate into cab and sound like coming from inside.

Does it sound like it's inside the vehicle or outside? I have run into a lot of the metal brackets behind the knee bolster being loose or the 7mm screws behind the knee bolsters being loose causing a rattle.

Is it a Hard rattle like a ball joint or strut failing or is it a a chirping time from a dash component being loose?

Here is a bulletin for your condition. Have ran into this many times before as well.

#PIT4485D: Rattle / Popping / Snapping Type Noise From Center IP Air Deflector - (Jun 16, 2011)

Condition/Concern:

Some customers may comment about a rattle/popping/snapping type noise from the center IP air deflectors when the blower is on. In most cases, the noise is from the left center air deflector. This condition may be due to the air flow door being loose and vibrating. If the thumb wheel (to close off the air flow) is slightly rotated, the noise will be eliminated or reduced.

Recommendation/Instructions:

Engineering has released updated IP Air Deflectors. The parts catalog may not reflect the updated or latest version of the deflector. Use the parts catalog to determine what part number is needed and then compare it to the chart below to help determine what the updated (latest) version would be prior to ordering.

as these age, you can start from the bottom up. Cab mounts in poly, bushings.

Same as always.

I attacked my 96 with steel and mounts and bushings, better than new.

I may get a heat creak of expansion if it snaps from 21 below to 40 above in 26 hours...but hey..

no complaints.

I also found the heater motor itself, instead of sleeve bearings, find one with real rollers.

not a long list to keep a cab good.

It's definitely inside the cab. Sound like it's coming from the hood release area.

My truck has a rattle from the shift interlock solenoid that keeps you from putting the vehicle in gear without pressing the brake....thought it was the hood release cable for the longest time. Need to replace it when I get time and see if it fixes it.
