lawnboy-5247 Posted March 10, 2017 Posted March 10, 2017 Today I noticed that one of my rear shocks is leaking. I am trying to decide if it is worth it to replace the rear set with 5100's or just get the shock warrantied. My truck currently has the black gm shocks and as stated above if I go to 5100's I would only do the rears now, I would do fronts at a later time. Would only doing the rears help my ride at all? Krusty Posted March 10, 2017 Posted March 10, 2017 I would go the Bilsteins myself - although even those state a little leakage is normal - but not a pool of oil.......
lawnboy-5247 Posted March 10, 2017 Author Posted March 10, 2017 The entire shock is covered in oil and makes a odd scraping and sloshing noise when I bounce the rear end, leading me to think it may be bad. Sent from my LGLS991 using Tapatalk
Grjfer Posted March 10, 2017 Posted March 10, 2017 Both... Warranty the bad shock, and get the Bilsteins.
O_J_Simpson Posted March 10, 2017 Posted March 10, 2017 This is one of the few times I will say skip the warranty. The new shock will be complete junk, like the one that is blown. Go 5100's and don't look back.
tnchevy Posted March 10, 2017 Posted March 10, 2017 I would get the shock replaced by the dealer just to make GM pay for their poor choice of going with a cheap shock. I would then promptly get rid of them and get the 5100's! I've got 6 months left on my 3yr/36k bumper to bumper warranty and when I hit that mark I plan on getting the 5100's to raise the front end a little and add some bigger and more aggressive tires while I am at it.

Especially over rough roadway like railway crossings etc. Don't waste time on the OEM's warranty........
Bmz72 Posted March 10, 2017 Posted March 10, 2017 Both... Warranty the bad shock, and get the Bilsteins. Beat me to it ! Then pawn them on Ebay to fund the 5100's
cbrsilv15 Posted March 10, 2017 Posted March 10, 2017 Exactly what I was thinking. Even if You get $40 for the oem's that's worth it for free money.
O_J_Simpson Posted March 10, 2017 Posted March 10, 2017 Beat me to it ! Then pawn them on Ebay to fund the 5100's There is no resale value of OEM shocks. Many have tried to sell them here and like mine, they went in the trash can.
Donstar Posted March 11, 2017 Posted March 11, 2017 Check with your dealer and see if you can just pay the difference to upgrade your warrantied replacements!
soltys Posted March 11, 2017 Posted March 11, 2017 Don't shoot the messenger, but you may want to check with your dealership before getting your hopes up on a free replacements. It's upon dealer description but usually shocks are considered a wear and tear item and won't be covered beyond the first year of the truck. I notice in your description that your truck is a 2014 so you may be looking at replacing. If that's the case - 5100s all the way.
hairybumcrack Posted March 11, 2017 Posted March 11, 2017 Get the dealer to buy back the truck or go full lemon law on them.
