Okay, Briggs and Stratton 6.75 engine. It has no spark. I have a new coil, new plug.....no spark. I removed the kill switch wire in SSR it was shorted to ground and still no spark. Weak magnets on the flywheel maybe???? The stupid thing is only 3 years old!!!!

No joke same engine on a Craftsman and I put the fu$#er to the side of the road. The first time it happened to me, the auto start choke governor lever doohickey was goofed. I re adjusted it and it ran fine rest of that year. This year, nothing. I think I'm getting something Honda powered to replace it lol.

Fired up my Kohler powered Toro today for the first cut of the season. Other than the grass being a bit long and damp, it went reasonably well. I prepped all my outdoor equipment earlier too.

Years ago my girlfriend had a mower with a B&S engine that "just stopped running" according to her. Turns out she hit a small stump and the blade stopped suddenly, but the flywheel kept turning which sheared the woodruff key at the flywheel-to-crankshaft end. This allowed the flywheel (which contains the ignition-generating magnets) to be waaaaay out of time, so the ignition was messed up. The key was fairly soft aluminum, I think it was made to be sacrificial in case of a blade strike like this, effectively killing the ignition and saving the engine from further damage. You might check that on yours.

I fixed it yesterday actually. Used my spark tester from work and it had spark after installing the new coil. Removed the carburetor bulb and found the screw that holds it on has three small orifices in it, when the pull string is pulled the vacuum from the intake valve pulls fuel up through the bulb into a crossover pipe into the cylinder head, well....those orifices were clogged. I guess it happened from ethanol fuel sitting through the down season. But on the first pull after cleaning it, it started.

I usually preach "Buy American" but in the case of small engines Briggs and Scrap Iron are junk! The only thing I have that is Japanese and it is my Lawn Mower and a weed wacker! Kawasaki engine in a John Deere mower. Sad to say John Deere does not make mowers anymore and mine is getting long in the tooth. Have to go to a Honda next time I guess!

I like the loaded mower with the blade clutch etc. Not many make those!

Your sure its the spark, whenever I had trouble with mine it was the float stuck in the carb.

I had both concerns. No spark and the orifices on that screw that holds the carb float cover on were clogged. So while I was pulling the string to start it, vacuum was being applied to pull fuel into the intake valve, but with the screw orifices being clogged....no fuel could get there. Once I cleaned it, it started right up on the first pull.

Pump gas can simply not be used any longer in small engines, ethanol just absolutely destroys them. If you do go cheap and decide pump fuel is good enough you better not keep it any longer then a month at a time, even with stabilizer it doesn't cut it any longer. I bought new Honda mower and while it's great even a couple months of use with ethanol fuel was starting to create issues with starting and smooth running. This year i drained the oil, new plug and filter and most importantly bought fuel with no ethanol in it at home depot. Not cheap at 19.95 for 110 oz which is not even a gallon, but i'm done letting pump gas ruin everything i put it in!

Gas is an issue for some, but for most it is not. Otherwise the small engine forums would be full of this stuff. They are not. There are occasional posts with fuel issues. In general as long as you use a good quality fuel, don't run too high of an octane, and use a fuel stabilizer in the gas cans that will be holding gas in them for more than 4 or 5 months, you'll be fine. Ethanol or not. I run lots of small engines off of Shell or Costco 85 octane fuel that is 6+ months old with no fuel stabilizers and they work fine. You're just throwing $$$ away getting that "Tru-Fuel" crap from HD. But it's your money, do with as you please.

Not for nothing, but I use Startron.

I have pump gas in my generator that is two YEARS old...I have no doubts that it would start normal after all that time.

I have gas sitting in plastic cans that's two years old, I've run that through my big zero turn and garden tractors without a hiccup.

I use my log splitter once a year, store it with pump gas in it...treated with Startron, starts everytime...same for my Gravely C10A.

I think those with issues would have also had issues with non-ethanol fuels regardless.

    • Looking for advice from this group. Took my flawless 2020 6.2 TB to an unnamed shop for routine rear brakes and oil change. Tech forgot to put oil back in after the full service and needles to say, destroyed my engine.  It’s all on their shop video so they are responsible.   I had my Chevy dealer do the analysis and they confirmed its compromised and said engine replacement. The manager said they only get GM reman engines from GM with full 3 yr warranty and the one they would put in is not same as what’s they are swapping out on 21-25 for recall.    I am looking for advice why that would be a different engine because obviously I had the good 6.2 year and replacing it has my concerns with that recall for 21-15   Also what’s the pros and cons of accepting the engine swap vs telling the shop that bricked the truck to pay up so I buy a new truck. I’m concerned about stigma resale eventually if I just decide to get rid of it after the swap or other issues showing up after the swap out.
    • Just looked up my records.  I've never gone over 5000 miles between oil changes.  At 46K miles, I have 10 oil changes.  I hope that will help.  I also installed the disabler last year.  I've still had a few times when it didn't seem to engage (which I can tell because the start stop feature kicks in), but for the most part, I think it's working.  For some reason, GM did not include the number of cylinders running in the information screen like I had on other models.  In my Cadillac, it shows me when it's running on 4 cylinders on the fuel milage screen.  I can't find that on my '21 Denali.
    • you might read through the info on gmupfitter.com for your truck, to find a good power source.
    • Melling I believe is/was the OEM on the lifters who explored this problem some years ago. The white paper they generated on the topic indicated two items of note when I read it. 1.) They only fail on the switch. Prevent the switch, prevent the failure. 2.) The majority fail due to deposits messing up the timing of that switch. Anyway that's what I got from it.    Mine have always been active, 195K+ now, and my oil maintenance is surgically clean.    Of course this assumes good parts. That is no heat treat issue or machining flaws. I get comfortable that these issues are in the rearview mirror by about 30K. IMHO naturally.
    • Yes, the key seems to be with the half tons that if it has the Z71, then it definitely has the two speed. What got me was that the two speed AND the lower geared towing package option could not be chosen together the last few years unless it was mated up to the 6.2. Want the 3.0 duramax and 3.73 tow gears ... nope, can't get the two speed transfer case ( neighbor son realized that after he had bought his used 3.0 half ton .. where the frick is the low range ? ! ).    I am still unsure which truck series, the half ton or the HD truck that the original poster is referring to for sure other than yes his question is in the HD section of this forum but that doesn't guarantee the question got asked in the right section.
