New Sierra Transmission Clunk

Recommended Posts

Just bought a brand been 2018 GMC Sierra All Terrain and the transmission just started clunking!

2700 miles on it and I just threw her into 4wd for the first time. Headed up to the snow last weekend and right after I put her back into 2hi she started this clunks from 1st to 2nd fear.

super bummed I didn’t know about this before I bought it. Dealership told me it’s what GM calls acceptable.

Anyone have any any fixes for this issue?? Or know of any updates coming to fix it?

thanks guys! First post. Love everything about this truck. Except that huge clunking when she starts up

After I took her out of 4wd, I did a couple donuts to feel for a crow hop and nothing. So yes the front wheels were disengaged

there's a service builtin for the 1-2 clunk.. i just had the computers flashed in my truck just for that... and it fixed the issue.. . mine was loud and would sometimes push you forward...

Dang thanks Chris i'll have to try that out. So weird, on Monday I got in a tight spot and had to floor it for a little. SInce then I have not felt it. Even trying to recreate it and nothing. So I'm obvioulsy happy for now but if it shows any sign of coming back Ill be back at the dealer asking about the computer.

Hi all,

My 2017 1500 5.3 shifts much better after the 3 firmware updates, not sure which one it was as it dosen't show on the repair order. I still have a very hard downshift from 3-2 and 2-1 not all the time but when it does it its very obvious and annoying. Coming to a stop or exiting the highway on the ramp.  I'm sure as it continues It will get worse as the specs increase from the wear. I pulled the dipstick today just to see if the fluid was still good and when I cleaned the stick it had alot of what appears to be metal or friction disk material. Is this normal? Attached pic. I have also noticed that after the temp goes past 160 or so that's when its more consistant with the hard downshifting.I was curious if anyone having this issue has tried full syn or those high end multi application fluid?  My normal op temp is around 190 and I dont think thats too hot to cause issue. Seems like the computer is just mis-calcuating the speed during downshift,

Sorry if this has been covered already, I love the truck excluding the wierd transmission. Forgot to mention its a 6 speed and I have 1,933 miles on it.

Search on this forum for hard downshifting and odds are you'll find a few of my posts.  I have a 2016 5.3 6 speed (bought it new and currently have 19k miles).  I had it in several times for the downshift concern and sadly there is no fix.  I've had it drilled into my head that it's a characteristic of the transmission.  I even had the valve body with TCM replaced a few weeks ago, this did not fix it.  Sadly, the issue is in the programming  and GM will do nothing anymore with the 6 speeds.  Love the truck, just hate the downshifts when coming to a stop.  In town driving is stupid, on highway its awesome.  BTW I see you are in Tampa.  I love Florida!!!  Fargo, ND here.

hope this helps... this was the fix for mine.. with the clunks... and above is what they did.. drives totally different, and my gas range increased 2mph on my daily driving..

No just alot of talking. The svc mgr showed me the bulletin where the do the flush thing but said that mine wasent bad enough to preform the procedure because GM wouldnt reimburse them for the time and materials. He would do the bulletin at my expense of course. I have a good friend that works at a transmission shop for 25 yrs and Iam thinking of just having them do the flush with the BG fluid exchange. They will warranty the transmission up to 200k with a full replacement as long as I have it serviced every 30k. Thinking its probably worth the $300. From what ive been reading the AC delco fluid just meets the minimum spec's to begin with.

On a similar note I installed the Range AFM delete module and it made the downshifting way worse so off it comes. Ill be returning that thing. It also leads me to believe more and more its the computer prematurely throwing down the gears to early.

Sorry so late responding

Thanks again for the input all!

Mine is a 6 speed.

i have the same transmission downshift clunk from 3rd to 2nd pretty consistently.

It it depends how fast I am slowing down.

The dealer has reset the learning parameters twice and flushed the transmission fluid once.

nothing has worked.... frustrating!

Just paid for a flush and BG syn fluid upgrade at the advise of trans specialist.  Made no difference at all.  Still slamming down 3-2 really hard. Hate to think the damage thats going on with drive train. Going to make another appointment at the dealership to make sure I have the latest updates. She just Turned 5k and I have to say I'm less than impressed with GM's response to this issue. Hate to do it but I also may be jumping the fence if this remains unresolved.  Although GM says its normal, its not. Love everything else about the truck.

you gotta do what you gotta do.  Don't blame you if you move to another brand.

    • I tried before I updated the scan tool just incase an update messed it up, but it never worked so I updated the scan tool and it still didn't work.   Only difference is I click on Sierra not Chevrolet cause I have a Sierra.   If I click on 2026-2024 I didn't have any option to change placard, when I click on 2023 it does give me the option but when I try to do it,.it says vehicle not supported!   I have my region or market or whatever it is set to America I think, is that what yours is set to?
    • Its just that it worked on 2024 trucks on this forum and my 2025 model truck, unless GM did something since that point to screw up access or Autel has a bad update. I haven't had need to use my tool since last year when I did the changes to the placard pressure settings and since then I updated the software on my Autel but have not plugged into the OBD so hard to say if I would get a surprise as well.    All I know last year when I bought the Autel I was warned to be sure to update it before I tried using the unit as they said who knows how long ago unit itself was actually manufactured as the software could be way out of date.
    • And so you had gone through the process of registering and updating the tool and so on ?. All I can say is that on the front page as the tool fires up you go to advanced mode, then vehicle model comes up and you choose Silverado ( not the DRW or EV  since your a single rear wheel ) , then I think its choice 2 which is 07/2021 - 12/2026 ( 433mhz 13542523 ) as that is the series of tpms sensors and then go down to choice 5 which is tire type/pressure selection. Hit yes and it says to connect to OBD port and turn ignition on.    Having said this, I updated the software in my tool lately and these year range choices look different from the past due to them doing some updates it would appear and I have not connected up to the OBD port since last year so hopefully I am not in for a surprise with them screwing up the software and that it won't work on my truck anymore either.    So my question is, when you plugged into the OBD and started your truck it had that message on the Autel screen "vehicle not supported" ?. That does seem odd as tire shops would be pissed right off if hey can't use their tool on the model year after mine that in theory is supposed to be much the same truck ... unless GM did some change in the computer system to block certain things from access.
    • Understanding and using modern scan tools is its own body of knowledge. I had little hope that would work...programming access to the BCM is probably required and that is not easy for us consumers. Expensive scan tool, GM programming subscription, online authentication, etc.   It also may be a matter of finding the right dealer to program it for you. Flashing a modern BCM might be a little too advanced for most tire shops.
    • Update for anyone following:    Installed everything as shown in diagram. Opted for 8 AWG from Battery Positive to a 50A resettable inline breaker. 8 AWG is tied into to 2x 12 AWG wires feeding a 6 way fuse bus in parallel (manufacturer’s design of what I purchased).    4 of the 6 fuses available for circuits are tied to terminal 30 of each relay. I tied a jumper from one of my spare circuits off the bus to terminal 86 of each relay. The trigger, terminal 85, was pulled from my interior by way of T-Taps from the X61A-X5 pins 10, 11, 17 and 23. This was the hardest part of the job. Even with the X61A unbolted and the X5 removed - there was VERY little wiggle room.  I added back up lights that I want to come on with my cargo lamp - but when I would check continuity between S48A-X1 pin 18 to its respective landing point on the X61A-X5 it triggers the factory relay… Instead I opted for a add-a-fuse on the passenger interior fuse panel (fuse location 10 - cargo lamp) and ran it through the boot on the driver side to my load. Did this to avoid introducing any electrical gremlins.   Note: Please check for continuity between the S48A-X1 and the X61A-X5. In my case wire colours were not the same as other’s who have posted. To do a continuity check you need a Multimeter. Completely disassemble the S48A-X1 and remove the brown face plate off the X61A-X5 by way of a flat head screwdriver - this was the only way I could get any results.   The outputs, terminal 87 of the relays, were fed into a junction box and landed at Individual studs and were labelled Aux 1-4.    At this point, all you need to do is run wire to your loads and bring them to ground. I created a negative bus in the engine bay, all my negatives land here.    For anyone having issues with all of your new aux switch lights coming on with the press of one - I noticed this only to be an issue when the battery wasn’t hooked up to my relays? No idea why, but it was quickly corrected by having my system buttoned up and functional.
