Safety Package - Aftermarket?

Recommended Posts

Anyone else regret not getting the safety package?  Backing up is a breeze with the rear Camera, but I could really use those sensors when parking front 1st with this beast! I went from a Sport sedan to a 2019 RST and am still getting used to my new baby.

What are good aftermarket options if any?

If it makes you feel any better, my sensors never work correctly anyway. They are completely defeated by water, ice, dust, salt, wind, clouds, or simply cold temperatures. Hoping they get better in the spring or with a SW update, but really you ain’t missing much right now.

Chevy shit the bed by not offering the 360 degree cameras on all levels. They make it so much easier to park. I can't imagine not having front camera trying to park in my garage. With the camera, it's a breeze.

The sensors are more trouble than they're worth. My Jeep has them on the back and it will even hit the brakes if you get too close to something. The only time they've ever activated the brakes is when snow gets on them and I try to back into my driveway.

The rear camera is helpful but the rest of the stuff is just a band aid for bad driving IMO. I've driven mostly trucks since I was 16 and have managed since then without the sensors and I'll probably be fine to keep going.

Yes I agree that it’s not necessary as long as one applies proper driving skills. However after driving my wife’s loaded Tahoe (with safety pack) it’s a nice luxury to have (for tight parking garages) but not mandatory.  If I could do it over I would have included it with all my other upgrades. Driving my RST is obviously becoming easier each day and I fuggin love this truck!

Admittedly I don't use the sensors much since I got the cameras, but without the cameras the sensors compensate for a whole lot of blindspots.

Categorically calling it bad driving when some people prefer having more information available when they are maneuvering somewhat blindly is not really a reasonable point of view IMO.  You cannot see everything behind you, and the sensors help fill in gaps.

Your personal good luck since you were 16 is not really relevant, but congratulations on your luck just the same.

I have it and would not own a truck without it after having it.  With a tight garage and increasingly tighter parking spaces, makes life easier.  However, I did survive with just a camera and even nothing in the past but this is a good thing to have.  Not sure about aftermarket.

So I've been considering the safety package I on an LT,  which includes:

  • Rear Cross Traffic Alert
  • Front and Rear Park Assist
  • Black recovery hooks
  • Lane Change Alert with Side Blind Zone Alert

I know others in this thread have said the sensors are useless. Initially I was thinking it would be useful to have the blind spot, cross rear traffic alert and the front park assist. But after reading the feedback I'm having second thoughts. Does anyone find it extremely useful?

There aren't many LT's with the safety package I and now I'm thinking it might be better to put that money towards the convenience package II.

I have all the cameras but the front. Wished I had it for the parking garage at work. Sometimes I have to get out and look to see if I can pull in another foot or so. Can't back into diagonal spots.

Do you have the front sensors?

Sensors yes, but that doesn't tell me feet vs inches like a camera would. I usually pull up to 3 of the 4 bars and then get out and look.

Ok, ya'all can kick my old ass under the bus, but sensors, cameras, blah, blah. All I've ever needed is a good mirror or two and thankfully my depth perception is just fine, so quit whining.

My sons Tahoe had lane departure vibrating seats. They came in handy if you were driving awhile and wanted a butt massage. All you had to do is wander a little they would activate. Otherwise I had no use for them. One of the reasons it had electrical issues I’m sure. Had to be gotten rid of.

Well I started this Topic and wanted to give an update.  My car before this was a Infinity G35; so after driving that for 13 years I finally stepped up to a big boy Rig.  At first I felt like I made a mistake by not getting the Safety Package because driving the Silverado is WAY different than the G35 (obviously).  Now that I have ~2K miles on my RST, I don't feel like the sensors were really needed. Sure they are helpful, but I don't think I would have substituted my other options for it (i.e. convenience package II, Max Tow, leather bucket seats, and heated searing wheel/seats (surprised at how much I love the luxury).  It took  time getting used to the longer wheel base, etc.  But now I can park that baby confidently...Backing up is easy with the HD camera (very precise and i love it).  Parking forward is fine now that I have a good idea of how far the trucks front end is...it literally falls straight down from the end point of the hood (stub nose). Sure if you have the $$$, get the safety package, but if it means substituting other options important to you, you may want to think twice.

Thanks for the update, that's a good review.

I did not get Safety I on my RST, and I'm pleased. I would rather have the blind spot mirror in the corner of my driver side mirror vs. the blind spot indicator, to be honest. Way more all-around useful.

And my experience with the parking sensors was always disappointing. They would beep like a bomb was going off, then I would get out and notice I comfortably had another 6+ inches I could have moved forward before touching the object the sensors were so alarmed about me hitting.

Like you said, Street Queen, once you get used to the truck, it's pretty easy to guide it into the proper spaces.

    • Well....I've done my first intake gasket. Probably wrong, but...we'll see?   Ultra black on the china walls and 1/4" up onto the sides of the intake gaskets. Permatex High Tack (couldn't find Gaskachinch) on the head side of the intake gasket. I read wrong and it says you're supposed to put it on the mating surface of the head, not the gasket. Hoping it's like a PB&J sandwich where it doesn't matter what side the PB goes on so long as there's jelly. That crap is messy/sticky and I got a dab or two on the intake port openings, tried to wipe it off. Hopefully it won't be a big deal and will only aid in sealing.   Per instructions I left the intake (top side) of the gasket dry except for a light smear of RTV around the coolant ports. Wiggling the intake in there was a bear but I had help to free me of surrounding wiring/stuff but I was basically able to set it straight down lined up with the bolt holes.   I did not think to wait until the RTV skinned over but there probably was 5-10 minutes while it sat before installing the intake.   Bolts finger tight first. Then, followed the Chilton's manual pattern to snug them to 15 lb-ft.   Waited a little over an hour, and then did the final torque in sequence again to 35 lb-ft.   Yesterday I replaced the fuel pressure regulator and got my new "nut and bolt kit" (fuel lines) installed. Damn GM used security torx on the spider, which I don't have, so I got scammed at the local HW store for an off-brand security Torx bit set.   The new driver's door mirror arrived yesterday, so, there's a chance this thing could be running and road legal tomorrow? I don't want to get my hopes up.   This will be my first time stabbing a distributor, too. Although, lucky me, someone else marked the old distributor for removal previously, I did see that. (Someone's been here before!!). Engine is still at TDC so it *should* be just a matter of transferring the mark to the new dizzy and rotating it into place.
    • He has his dad’s newer truck he’s put away. He has several old cars he rotates between him and his family. I’ve seen a restored square body and a SS Chevy truck he’s sometimes drives. He did raffle off a new suburban recently. As much as he is watched if he drove new stuff as a rule we’d know it. It would be fine by me. I don’t care what people prefer. I got one more new one in me. I’d rather my wife get one. I can’t get her out of the Genesis. Don’t tell anyone. I want her to get an electric truck. I want to put a generator in the back. Just because. She hasn’t bit yet.
    • Yes, you must have seen my thread on the Blazer. HOT GARBAGE, but I love them anyway. I'm convinced every car guy has a soft sport for an S/T series somewheres. Probably even a Panther too, if I'm being an honest car guy. That doesn't mean they aren't junk. And they definitely don't get better with age. I sometimes play with old cars, but that's by choice. I don't rely on them and they aren't my everyday fleet.   Derek plays the common man on Youtube and that's no doubt where he started. Now he has Youtube money (and Motortrend, etc). You think his crews and his wife ride around in old beaters when they're chasing him and his wrecks across the country? No he's got newer and nicer stuff for that, you'll see glimpses of it in the footage.
    • You refuse to own anything made in this century yet you reportedly own... a 2007 Silverado, which is now almost 20 years old. The dissonance.... turn up your hearing aid?   You clearly don't understand the government contracting process, brother. We send people to die on front lines, keep the public safe, and make people's husbands, wives, children enter burning buildings with equipment from .....wait for it.....   ...the lowest bidder....   Just because something is used for a long time doesn't mean it's good. But it might be cheap and plentiful.   Please, continue to whine about new trucks in a thread dedicated to new trucks, which you've said you'll never own. We get it. Go tell everyone how you're stuck in time on a Panther forum. I mean, Jesus, an 86 isn't even one of the good Panthers.
