I have a 2017 5.3l non flex fuel l83.  Looks like there are some conversion kits out there.  CJPerformance (http://www.cjtunes.com/store/flex-fuel-conversions/14plus-gm-truckssuv-flex-fuel-conversion/) offers a conversion kit.  Anyone done this? 

 

I have a BlackBear Performance tune, I inquired about an E85 tune before I realized my vehicle was not flex fuel.  I was told that I don't need an E-85 tune specific, that the 93+ tune they provided me would work with E85, that the computer would adjust to the E85 fuel.  Would that logic change if I use this CJPerformance kit?

A non flex fuel vehicle will not compensate for the E85, whoever said it is an idiot.

 

The computer has to known the real alcohol content to make real time adjustments and it has to be setup in the tune to use it. Without a real sensor it can't alter the stoich ratio for the fuel nor can it use the flex fuel features such as spark advanced changes or commanded fueling under power enrichment to use the E85 or mix of fuel to the best of it's abilities.

 

DSX tuning also offers a flex fuel kit or you can buy the parts and plumb it yourself to save money. That is, if you can do your own work and wiring.

 

I have no experience with black bear as I do all my own tuning but I can only hope they are smart enough to know how to enable that feature and use the tables in the calibration to provide the customer with what they want.

Thanks for the insight.  And to BlackBear's defense I am sure they were acting under the assumption my vehicle was already flex fuel compatible.  It wasn't until after I inquired that I realized it wasn't.

So I reached out again with BlackBear and they stated they can absolutely enable the flex fuel routines for a flex fuel conversion kit.  The sensor has to be installed prior to any tuning being provided.   

 

Of the two flex fuel conversions, CJ or DSX, I think I am going to go the DSX route.

Besides the fuel sensor, what comes in the "kit"?  Why not just buy GM OEM parts?  They seem to work pretty well.

Either kit will work and they are both priced pretty similar.  I have the DSX kit in my CTSV and its a quality setup. 

 

Let us know how the install goes

Im pretty sure its all GM parts preassembled that you're just buying from someone else for an upcharge

I think all the OEM parts needed to do the conversion are listed in this thread with part numbers.

 

 

Should be able to order those parts online cheaper than what the conversion kits cost.

Your wasting your money going with those expensive kits.   I just did this to my CREW CAB 2014 6.2 for about 60 bucks.  Then I enabled it in the tune with HP tuner myself.  You can just get Black Bear to do it.

 

You need to watch this video from Pmoore4321.  The reason I capitalized CREW CAD is the fuel lines are a little different from his Reg cab to a crew cab.  On mine I placed the sensor right where the soft line from the fuel tank makes a connection too the hard lines.  If you just unclip the soft line from the little clips that hold it down there is enough slack to fit the sensors and the fitting  right where the soft line make a 90% turn.

 

Then just cut wires for the sensor connector and solder or crimp.  And extend those three wires about 25" to reach the new location of the sensor.  I was done in about 30 mines from start to finish.  It the easiest and best dollar for dollar mod you can do.

I guess I am not patient enough.  I ordered the DSX kit then after doing so got all of this great advice.  Oh well...  I constantly see inquiries about easy performance mods.  See Headers, CAI, Cat back pretty common but seldom see mention of FlexFuel conversion.  It seems to be the best bang for your buck performance mod whether you spend $300 like I did or get it accomplished for under a $100.

Either way it’s gonna be worth the cost once you start running E85. The performance boost is well worth the cost

I agree 100%. I was getting ready to pull the trigger on the CJ kit too.  Then i just happen to come across this video.  it is well worth it.  Gas milage not so much.  But filling up for 45.00 to 50.00 bucks is worth it.  Performance really worth it.

TBN and ZDP levels matter. The one thing not covered was sufficient viscosity. Sad.     And yet we now have since API SN lower amount of them all with the only real change being a slight up tick in base oil selection. Along with lower concentrations of everything that makes oil work and lower and lower viscosity there is still an insistence on longer OCI's.    How low does the peanut butter and jelly level have to get before we say it's just white bread folded?    The new smoke and mirror treatment is the 'additives are INVISIBLE' to UOA testing with a health dose of TRUST ME.    I'm not picking on AMSOIL. This is coming from all of them. Every last one of them that abandon the low wear model in favor of the high mpg/EPA compliance model. 
    • First off use it in the way you’re more comfortable. In working in off road situations most of my life I used 4WD low range very little. In most cases when equipped I used auto 4WD. If I wanted maximum control going up and down very steep terrain  I used low range. Especially if I was driving a diesel. Same with very rutted terrain. In very muddy or snowy conditions I wanted momentum so high range worked well for that. With gravel ramps with limited traction I would try high range first. I would want smooth even increasing speed if I was fighting traction. Low range could give you too much to the wheels breaking traction trying to move. 
    • Having owned 4wd vehicle since the 1970s I find there are varying opinions on how to use 4wd, every owner is an expert in their minds.  IMO, 4LO is the appropriate gear and what I would use,  You have to feather the gas to avoid spinning tires and the lower the gear the better chance.  But like I said you will find those that think their method is best.  I live near a boat launch.  Yesterday there was a new Ford Maverick pulling out a pontoon boat almost 2x its size, they had no problems and they don't have a LO range.   True story. One winter day not long ago I was coming out of small town post office and there was a F150 4wd parked in front and was stuck foot deep snow ruts. I knew the lady so I asked her to put it in 4wd (wondering why in the middle of a 2-day snow storm she wasn't).  Her reply surprised me, "my husband" (the expert) told me not use that because it uses too much gas. She finally got unstuck spinning in 2wd which likely used more gas than not.  
    • Your tire pressure issue may just be batteries, you can reset them using tge Ing switch (I think) and the owner's  manual. ChatGTP will b e a faster, better help than Google.
    • The thinking is that starting out in a higher gear makes it easier to avoid applying excessive torque when pressing the gas pedal. In a modern 4wd truck with 4 low and a limited slip or locking rear end, I would use 4 low and try to crawl up the ramp. Sometimes if they are too slippery, you have to back up to let the boat have some bouyancy, and then accelerate briskly to get some momentum to help you pull the through the slippery parts.
