What’s up guys? My step dad has an 18 Duramax and does a lot of towing back and forth from Texas to Missouri. What tire do y’all recommend for throwing on the truck? He’s still riding the stock Michelin’s but after 32K they are already going bald. I’ve told him nitto is one of the top ways to go, but just wanna get y’all input as well.

A guy I work with has a '14 1500 and tows his sxs on a 16 ft trailer loaded down with other stuff too, quite a bit. He is running the Toyo open country at ii and just changed them out around 80k on them. Another I work with has a 2011 2500hd with a 6.5 inch lift on 37s and runs the Toyo open country Mt and says he gets 75k out of them running them max psi the whole time, with occasional towing of a boat in the summer months. I have heard good and bad about nitto, but have not actually used them personally. I run the open country at ii on my 2500, dont really tow often, but as far as road noise and ride quality, I love them. Hope this helps a little. Also, the at ii comes with 50k mile warranty, a lot of the nittos and other Toyo don't have one at all from what I've seen

Don’t know about Nitto but the brand doesn’t come up a lot when the subject is about towing. 

 

If it’s a mainly on road truck the Michelin Defender LTX is gonna be your best bet. If he needs an AT tire and still tows a lot I’d say Michelin LTX AT 2

 

if he’s wanting a more aggressive AT tire then Nitto, Toyo etc.

Michelin Defenders are great and I always like the Firestone Transforce tires.

 

Just speaking from what I've seen, you can cut the avg tire life by at least 30-40% if you tow all the time. Doing more city towing will scrub tires faster than long haul towing but they will still wear quicker than if you didn't tow at all.

 

If you can get 40-50k from a set of tire with lots of towing, you are doing pretty damn good if you ask me.

Highway tire the Michelin Defenders in of course E rating are pretty good, excellent wet traction, smooth ride and mine didnt need much weights to balance them. My son has the Michelin AT2 and they have been trouble free.

Well if GM put the E load rated Michelins LTX Defenders on it factory, you're going to have one hell of a time doing any better.  Does he air up properly for the load when he tows?

In no particular order:

Michelin Defender LTX M/S

Toyo Open Country AT2

BF Goodrich AT KO2 DT

Any of these should last 40K plus miles while towing provided the alignment is good and tires are religiously rotated.  On the old 2009 Duramax the AT2's lasted 53K miles and the majority of those were towing a 10,500 pound trailer.
