Recommended socket kit for 2019 Silverado

Most of the sockets are pretty common except the elusive 18 mm, I remember racing to the parts store when doing a clutch on my Pontiac just before closing to get an 18 mm, it is absent from a lot of sets. If you buy on line you get 20% off from Auto Zone, then pick up in store.

IMO if you are on here asking for a good socket set for the vehicle then you probably do not have the knowledge to work on the truck.

Now, I am into having people know stuff about their vehicle so maybe having someone holding you hand while you work is the best for you so that you do not create more problems.

Yeah no shade tree mechanic - wanted to have a good socket set for the truck incase I need to do anything minor.

The truck is mostly Metric, I personally haven't seen standard yet. A good Torx set (10-15 pcs) will get you by for almost everything. A set of metric Allen wrenches too.

Good luck finding a need for an SAE socket on any GM made in the last 10 years.  All metric, some Torx.  Might find Allen and high security Torx.

Get a good brand of 3/8" sockets up to 22mm for the truck. If you run into something larger it may be accessible with an adjustable wrench or a box wrench and good idea to have a 8mm to 22mm set of open/box combo wrenches. For individual applications you can buy a single larger or deeper socket and should not need a set of them. Tightspot makes combo ratcheting wrench sets and these can be save a lot of time in tight spaces.

A good brand is SK and I have a 1/4" set that dates back to my father using it on aircraft engines during World War II, so they are durable.

There is an extendible socket wrench that I love is the Ampro T29771 1/2" drive one. It can be extended in 1 inch increments from 12" to 17.5" and I can do it while working on a nut on the truck. I can use the long position to loosen the nut and then shorten the wrench to finish removing the nut, or for final tightening where it is awkward to apply a lot of force on the wrench.

What I like about Amazon Prime is that I can read the reviews on a new tool and determine if it a well made one and I have a huge selection of brands and sets to choose from which is not the case at auto parts stores. I can also have the tool delivered to my house in 2 days time so I can buy tools as needed.

Also worthwhile to have some basic tools that you keep in the truck at all times. For example I always have standard and vise-grip pliers and a 6 and 8 inch Crescent wrench, slot and Phillips screwdrivers and a Torx driver with various bits in the handle.

I have twice prevented engine fires with smoking wiring by having the small Crescent wrench and being able to remove the cable from the battery. I also carry a radiator sealant as these work very well to seal leaks when some yahoo with large aggressive tires but no mud flaps has flung a rock up from the road and into my truck.

I second this. But I would like to add: flashlight, adjustable wrench, utility knife, leather gloves, a rag. You never know when you might want to grab something hot or wipe up fluid. I know there are other threads about this if you want to go searching.

I mostly use my "emergency tools" for odd jobs that I did not plan to encounter, but they are always handy to have in the truck.

And if you are going to work on truck, or even just figure out what's wrong with it before getting someone else to work on it, I would highly suggest getting an online subscription to the full-service manual for your truck, when it becomes available (it takes a bit of time before it is).

A good entry level set is the craftsman max access (spelling?). Combines std and deep well versatility. My son uses it more than I do. He always has it out
