Do you think it will be totaled?

Everyone is okay, my wife was driving with my 3 kids. They're all shook up and a little sore but not a single scratch on anyone. Side air bag curtains deployed.

The other driver was driving an Equinox and he's okay as well.

Nice! Tbone. Glad your family was in a 5500lb modern vehicle with side curtains. side impacts in a smaller and older car can be very bad even at low speeds. No crumple zone on the side.

The dealership contacted me today and told me, they estimated repairs to be $19,650.  I have not heard from my insurance company yet. Hopefully I'll hear from them in the next couple days. At this point I'm so confused, I don't know if I want them to cut  me a check of just repair it.  I got a really good deal on my truck when I bought it, at this time I'm not finding any smoking hot deals out there.

I do like the new Trail Boss package, it's basically the upgrades I did to my truck when I bought it, level, oversized tires, & blacked out rims. I just miss my truck...

It doesn't mean an automatic write off, sometime they deploy in minor bumps or 'love taps', but with curtain bags you basically need to replace the seats, headliner, interior trim around the side impact air bags, you will also pay big dollars to have airbags replaced. There is likely B-pillar damage too looking at the photos, 2 painted doors, rocker, running board, $10k+ in parts alone. Structural safety will usually run a few grand with no frame or structure work done. Once the cab structure is compromised, they usually will write it off. Say insurance thinks someone will pay $20-25k for it at auction, they will likely offer OP around $30k or whatever FMV is because it will cost them $18,000+ at a body shop to put it back together. Once the cab or frame structure has been tweaked, its typically cheaper for the insurance company to write it off and get back what they can in auction. You get all the salvage-suckers paying top dollar for crashed trucks these days with all the Youtuber Salvage channels doing repair tutorials now. I refuse to go to insurance auctions anymore because people pay way too much. The biggest loser is almost always the vehicle owner, often they like to low-ball you especially if it was your fault.

What you wrote seems spot on. My estimate for repair were very close to your thoughts. Sounds like you've done this a time or two.

I own a medium sized trucking/construction company, we have lost a few units over the years and I help a local towing company with recoveries so I often get a chance to talk to the adjusters on site. Never a fun time to lose an asset, but more importantly no one was hurt. Hope you get your issues resolved quick and painless bud.

Glad the family is safe and sound.

The other issue others many folks don't understand is the a repaired vehicle is not worth as much, so you loose whatever equity you had for the paid off 2016. I understand there are good body shops, after working on MB cars for 6 years I can say I will never want to own a wreaked car, so many things are missed or cheapen out on all the little clips and wiring harness, on insurance company's. I can't stand working with them I have turned down jobs b/c I wont put my name on the repair, I have gotten into heated arguments with management about it. black listed for caring about others vehicle's that are event mine, if they wont do it right ship it somewhere else, hell I told a insurance adjuster if he ever stood in my stall again I'd call police and BBB on them. lastly most shops underbid the job to get the money, most tech's I worked with would underbid or accept a lower hour job just to make the money, I always stood my ground my job is to complete the repair, cost and time is not my problem they even want us to do the repair under warranty labor rates  with junkyard parts.... WTF get out of my stall.

wreaked vehicles are never the same, in rare and I mean very very very rare are they every equal or better. I'd only trust my vehicles body work to someone like Chip Foose .

hopefully the insurance writes it off, there are still huge deals on 2018's and now some ok deals on 2019's.

Glad everyone is okay.  Looks like the B-pillar worked, even if there is damage to it.  Make sure that the repair places you get quotes from look at the frame and wheel alignments.  My insurance had totaled my '15 Silverado out, a year ago, front drivers side was destroyed.

Our '03 Neon and '04 Pilot, both, never rolled the same after their "fender benders and repairs."

One of my mother-in-law's neighbors backed their boat trailer into our Neon, drivers fender, headlight assembly, grill, hood, and bumper was damaged, and the repair place missed the alignment being off.  Even after the alignment was "straightened out," it still never drove straight.

With our Pilot, we were on our way to Disneyland, when barely out of high lady was lighting her cigarette and not paying attention to the traffic in front of her.  I had "slid" off into the median, but was still sticking out about 6-9" into the "fast lane."  Had I gotten out of her way, completely, she would have slid right into the little economy car that I was sitting beside, driven by a "70 year old" lady.  $5,000 damage to our Pilot and a weekend of moving luggage to/from the back through the back left passenger door.  Her impact had pushed the passenger side of the back bumper up in the way of the back hatch, busted the supports for the muffler, closed the tubes coming off the muffler by 20%, and thru my back into spasms (prior existing condition).  We also had to replace both car seats for the kids.  She had insurance, but her father wanted to handle it with out our insurance companies.  3 months later, I got my insurance involved, because he was dragging his feet with it.

I'd say probably gonna be totaled with $19k + of damage...

I'm going through a similar situation.  I was rear-ended 2 weeks ago on the interstate here in Atlanta.....he was in a 2004 Dodge Ram that was absolutely demolished.  I drove mine from the scene.  However, the bed was hit with such force that it creased the back of the cab.  Frame was pretzeled, (twisted and turned into a diamond shape.)

They stopped counting when they got past about $25K to repair it.  Called me and told me to come clean it out.

Two downsides so far:  first - the guy had no insurance which means my UM coverage has to take care of it.  I'm covered, but will almost certainly face a rate increase next year.  Second - the insurer is having a difficult time coming up with comps to determine what mine is worth.  Not a lot of 17 LTZ LZ71s with the 6.2 and 22s out there.  Plenty of 5.3s but with those two options alone it's a $5500 difference before they depreciate it.

As for what to replace it with, I'm torn.   I don't love the 2019 Silverado/Sierra, and am seriously contemplating either a leftover new 18 Sierra 1500 Denali or a 17 or 18 CPO 1500 Denali.  The other option, candidly, is an F150 if I can find one with an EcoBoost.

Insurance wants to total it. They offered me $28,500. Seems way low, I can't find a stock '16 comparable to my truck for that price. They didn't ask me what options I have and they based their offer on a lesser truck than i own.
I sent them an NADA quote for my fully loaded truck and their assessment was around $34,000, not counting my level, custom rims/tires, tinted windows, etc...

Keep pushing them on the $$. Ask them to provide you with available comps  for an equally equipped truck at that price point.

Raise a glass to that truck for giving its life for your family.

It may sound silly. But, I had my wife, kid and I have a little dinner where we celebrated the truck that died protecting them. I know it’s hinky. But, it gave us closure.

I had to deal with this on our Lexus that got totaled about three years ago. Look up similarly equipped trucks. If they aren’t in your immediate area, then expand your search. We had a very low mileage, three year old car with some upper end options. They kept telling me comps were $5k less than I wanted. I went on auto trader and found three of the most expensive ones that I could find. They would tell me stuff like “that’s not in your area” or “it’s too far away to be comparable.” I told them to find me a similarly optioned car in my area and we could look at those. It’s not your fault that you bought a highly optioned truck. But they do need to compensate you for the truck that you have. Keep telling them no until you are satisfied. After fighting with them for about two weeks and sending in about 9 comps, some from as far away as California, they ended up offering me almost $4k more than their original estimate. I was happy with that. You also have to figure that if they are paying for a rental, it’s in their best interest to settle quickly so they don’t keep paying for a rental. On the Lexus, State Farm called me up and told me to return the rental car because mine was totaled. I told them that we haven’t agreed on a price, which ment that I couldn’t go buy a new car, so they need to keep me in a rental until we settle on the value of my car. I ended up having to talk to a few people higher than the original adjuster but it worked. It was a big PITA and is why I will never insure with State Farm again. I hope dealing with your insurance company goes smoother. Good luck and let us know what happens.

I'm glad my wife & kids were in my truck and not her late model trail blazer. The truck did it's job and kept them safe!

That's way to low;  like the other person said, keep on them.  I'm not sure how it works in the U.S., but while your vehicle is at the body shop I believe it incurrs a storage fee of some kind because it's taking up there space stored there.  The longer it takes for the claims adjuster to settle with you the more it costs the insurance company.  Don't settle for less..it looked like a gorgeous truck, and for you to go out and start all over again, you'll be spending twice that.  Hope it all works out for you and your family....good luck.

I have always felt safer in a pickup than a sedan or SUV.  I'm glad this incident has only resulted in minor challenges and will soon be history!   Now you are faced with decisions that one usually isn't forced to make!  Do you buy a used truck of equal value or do you go back to making payments on a new truck?  Personally, I'd go new.  There are still some '18's available and the base model 19's have an appeal.  Of course there is the option to buy a new smaller vehicle with the insurance payout, but that would not make sense in light of your comment I quoted!  Good luck!

Sounds low to me.. Not sure all your specs but, most 2016 loaded LT crew cabs I've looked at in my area lately are at least $30-34k with 30-40k miles.. Been casually looking since I want to replace my double cab with a similar crew cab in the next year or two..
